What are top most brutal acts of revenge in history?

The man who had his cheating wife sentenced to death.

Meet Robert Devereux, the 3rd Earl of Essex.

When he was 13, Robert was married to the 14 year old Frances Howard in a political union. The marriage was not consummated, and Robert immediately left for a two year tour of Europe, leaving his wife in England.

Frances promptly began a very public affair with the Earl of Somerset.

On Robert’s return, Frances reportedly barricaded herself in her room away from him, and eventually filed for an annulment of the marriage on the grounds of impotence, claiming that she had made every effort but Robert couldn’t perform in the bedroom. Robert claimed that everything was working fine down there, but he just couldn’t perform with her, claiming that she “reviled him, and miscalled him, terming him a cow and coward, and beast.“

In order to prove the impotence, Frances had to be examined by 12 women, who reported that she was in fact a virgin, however it was widely suspected that Frances had been switched with another girl for the examination, especially when it transpired that ‘Frances’ had insisted on wearing a veil through the whole thing. A popular song at the time made mockery of this event:

“This Dame was inspected but Fraud interjected
A maid of more perfection
Whom the midwives did handle whilest the knight held the candle
O there was a clear inspection!”

The rumours about Frances and Somerset were all but confirmed when following the annulment, they married 4 months later.

The whole escapade was the 17th century equivalent of a paparazzi feeding frenzy which made Robert a laughing stock in court and across the country. A situation only made worse when he remarried only for that marriage to also fall apart amongst rumours of infidelity. Even on the battlefield he was not safe from jibes, this was the banner one of his rivals flew against him during the Civil War:

Though clearly seething with rage, Robert could not touch Frances because she was now the wife of another powerful man, however that was about to change.

Sir Thomas Overbury, a friend of Somerset, had been strongly advising Somerset not to marry Frances. Frances’ family had carried out a plot which had led to Overbury inadvertently insulting the King and getting locked up in the Tower of London, where he died a mere 12 days after Frances and Somerset’s wedding.

The next year, an apothecary assistant confessed on his deathbed that he had been paid £20 by Frances to provide poisons for the purpose of murdering Overbury, and the prison guard confessed to smuggling poisoned sweets and tarts (provided by Frances) into his cell.

The Somerset’s were arrested and a trial was called, and who did they call to be one of the impartial jury members?:

Why, one Robert Devereux of course.

Robert pressed the King hard to impose the death penalty on his ex-wife, and he duly did so.

Regardless of whether Frances was guilty or not, being judged in a Murder trial by your cuckolded ex-husband is not anyone’s idea of a good time.

Note - it’s always worth remembering with things like this that we don’t, and can’t, know the full story. It was relatively common for women back then to be made out to be witches or adulterous if it suited the needs of the powerful.

What is the most powerful rakshasa in the Ramayana?

A Tie between Kumbhakarna and Indrajit

KUMBHAKARNA :-

  • Undoubtedly the Most Strongest Rakshasa in the Treta Yuga.
  • Defeated Indra and Yama in the Fair Battle.
  • Plucked out the Airavata Tusk and pierced it in the chest of Indra.
  • Crushed many Powerful Vanaras like Sugreeva, Nala, Nila, Angada etc., despite he is in the state of Intoxication.
  • Survived the Indra’s Vajra, Shri Rama's Raudrastra and the Arrow which killed Vali and countered the Arrows by flourishing the Hammer.
  • Shri Rama needed two Aindrastras and Vayavya Astra to bring him down.
  • What makes the impressive is despite his nose, ears were torn and his limbs were chopped, he continued to fight on his thigh.

INDRAJIT :-

  • He is the most powerful Archer from Lanka Side and also adept sorcerer and dangerous illusionist too.
  • He is the only warrior from Lanka Side who had the possession of Brahmastra.
  • Defeated Adityas, Rudras, Maruts, Vasus, Nagas and also Indra and his son Jayantha in fair fight (as mentioned in Valmiki Ramayana)
  • Just like his uncle, he too plucked out the Airavata’s tusk and manhandled Airavata and it's rider Indra by hurling them to the floor with Bare Arms.
  • He is the only being who captured Indra alive thus earned the name “Indrajit” (Conqueror Of Indra)
  • Stomped Sugreeva, Angada, Dvivida, Mainda etc., with his Arrows and also knocked out 670 Million Vanaras along with Shri Ram and Lord Laxman to unconscious after performing Nikumbala Sacrifice.
  • He converted some offsprings of Kadru into a weapon using his sorcery and with that weapon, he knocked out both Shri Rama and Lord Laxmana to unconscious by hiding behind skies through powerful illusions.
  • His best feat was helding Lord Laxmana on the ground for three continuous days and also destroyed the latter's celestial Armour gifted by Varuna with normal Arrows. Suprisingly, he didn't restored to any sort of boons or illusions and also Celestial Beings came to prevent Indrajit Arrows to reach Lord Laxmana.
  • Lord Laxmana has to use the Aindrastra empowered with Shri Rama's name which instantly kill Indrajit and the former’s condition was too serious after the battle so that he can't able to speak or take breath properly.

So Kumbhakarna/Indrajit are the powerful Rakshasas in Ramayana however Indrajit had a edge due to his unassailabled boons.

What is the most controversial moment in cricket history, and why?

I remember two incidents straightaway, both equally controversial and would've been very significant in big results of two different world cups.

22(13) becomes 22(1) !!!

South Africa took on England in the semifinals match of 1992 world cup in Sydney. It was a rain affected game. As a result, both the sides could bat for only 45 overs. Opting to bat first, England had scored 252/6 in their 45 overs. South Africa were going pretty good in the run chase despite the hiccups.

South Africa needed just 22 runs in 13 balls with 4 wickets in hand and two batters with good nick [Brian McMillan 21(21) and David Richardson 13(10)] in the middle. But suddenly, the rain gods appeared. The brainfade rule of the organisers (That no play could continue after 9:30pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time) meant that no play could continue.

Add to that, lowest-scoring-over rules (Not today's Duckworth lewis rule) meant that the equation came down ridiculously from 22 off 13 to 22 off 1. That's gotta be Cricket’s most controversial match of All-time (Both technologically and regulationally).

6 runs, instead of 5 runs !!!

It was the 2019 world cup finals between England and New Zealand. Opting to bat first on a big day, New Zealand could post only 241/8 in their 50 overs. In reply, England were in a tough situation, having to score 15 runs in the last over with just 2 wickets in hand.

Ben Stokes was the batter and Trent Boult was the bowler. The equation came down to 9 from 3. That's when Stokes hit a low full toss of Boult towards deep midwicket region. Guptill collected the ball and threw towards the keeper's end, where the ball collided with Stokes' bat and raced towards the boundary ropes for the four.

Here's the rule of ICC for deflection off the bat -

Law 19.8 of the ICC rules, pertaining to 'Overthrow or wilful act of fielder' - "If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side, and the allowance for the boundary, and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act."

But it was very evident even for the viewers that the second run was incomplete. But the collective brainfade decision from the main umpire and the leg side umpire meant that England were awarded an extra run. At that moment, nobody would've thought how costly would that decision turn out to be.

In the end, the match not just ended in a tie after the first 50 overs, but also got tied in the super over !! For such an incredible cricket match, the winner was decided based on the boundary count ! Imagine what would've been the result if that extra run wasn't awarded for England !

These two incidents are unarguably the most controversial ones in Cricket till date.

Which actors and actresses are the most versatile in South India?

Off the top of my head, I can list at least a score and more of actors from the four southern languages spanning over five decades. For the sake of contemporaneity, and leaving all lead actors like Kamal Hassan, Vikram, Mohanlal et al., I zero in on just one actor, who in my opinion is the very epitome of versatility.

Prakash Raj

Hailing from a rich stage background from the Kannada theater, this thespian has straddled the south Indian tinsel scene like a colossus in all the four languages(and also recently, Hindi) for nearly three decades, bagging along the way one National Award for Best Actor, one for the Best Supporting actor, one Special Jury awards, four Tamilnadu State Film awards,a handful of Filmfare (South) awards and half a dozen Nandi awards for his performances covering an entire range of roles. Here I will be talking only about his master class performances in Tamil films and some stray Telugu films, and leave the field open for my friends from other South Indian states to chip in with their contributions in the comments, or as separate answers.

Aasai (1995) : Perhaps in his first major running role, his performance as a cantankerous Army Major coveting his unwed sister in law, Prakash Raj oozed with a menacing meanness. In fact his performance as the scheming antagonist totally overshadowed the protagonist played by an young and handsome Ajith Kumar. In the same year he won his first Tamilnadu State Film award for best villain for his role as a sadistic husband in the movie Kalki directed by his mentor in Tamil, K.Balachander.

Iruvar (1997) : In this cult classic directed by the maestro Maniratnam, a thinly veiled political drama about the relationship between M.G.Ramachandran and M.Karunanidhi, Prakash Raj donned the complex role of Thamizhselvan modeled on Karunanidhi’s persona with great aplomb while pitted against another thespian Mohanlal in the role of Anandan closely resembling M.G.R. Prakash Raj won his first National award, for the best Supporting Actor for his excellent portrayal.

(Prakash Raj in Iruvar)

Antahpuram (Telugu-1998) : Prakash Raj played the elderly Narasimha, a violent and uncouth village chieftain with great authenticity, which fetched him another National Award (Special Jury) Prakash Raj also produced and reprised his role in the Tamil movie under the same name in 1999.

(Prakash Raj in Anthapuram)

Appu (2000 film) : In this movie Prakash Raj donned the role of Maharani, a transgender brothel keeper, reprising the role made iconic by Sadashiv Amrapurkar in the Hindi original Sadak, and delivered a power packed performance, as usual eclipsing the hero in every scene.

(Prakash Raj in Appu)

Okkadu (Telugu-2002) / Ghilli (Tamil-2004) : The negative role played by Prakash Raj in these Tamil/Telugu movies attained a sort of cult status, with his way of addressing the heroine as “Chellam” (Pet/Darling)became a trade mark of the actor.

( “Chellam” Prakash Raj in Ghilli)

Vasool Raja MBBS (Tamil-2004) In this Tamil remake of Munnabhai MBBS, Prakash Raj played the arrogant yet adorable Dr. Vishwanathan, matching the incomparable Kamal Haasan stride by stride in every scene they appeared together.

(Prakash Raj with Kamal in Vasool Raja M.B.B.S)

Anniyan (Tamil-2005) : In this movie as the cop in hot pursuit in the trail of the elusive Anniyan, Prakash Raj still managed to hold his own against a rampaging Vikram in an author backed role and won the Tamilnadu State Award for Best Villain (though I personally would not consider his role in the movie as villain)

(Prakash Raj with Vikram in Anniyan)

Bommarillu (Telugu-2006) / Santosh Subramaniam (Tamil -2008) : The role of Prakash Raj as an overbearing father dominating over every decision of his son was the pivot for the whole movie.

(Prakash Raj in Santosh Subramanian)

Mozhi (Tamil - 2007) : In my opinion, the best ever performance of Prakash Raj, in a parallel role as the fun loving friend of the protagonist, he could hold out against his much younger co-stars, and set the screen on fire with his spontaneous comic capers. Truly international level.

(Prakash Raj in Mozhi. Incidentally he was the produer too)

Arai En 305-il Kadavul : Prakash Raj played the god in this comedy, totally shedding his villain image with a very benign and calm look in his eyes.

Kanchivaram (Tamil-2008) : The crowning glory of an amazing career. Prakash Raj’s understated and poignant performance as a suffering silk weaver in the pre independence India, very deservedly fetched him the National Award and Filmfare award for the Best Actor.

(Prakash Raj in his award winning role in Tamil movie Kanchivaram)

Abhiyum Naanum (Tamil-2008) : In this home production of his, Prakash Raj turned from the hated villain of Trisha in Ghilli to her doting father, turning the dominant father of Santosh Subramanian into a caring and loving one for his daughter. This role merits a mention just prove how he could achieve such transformations effortlessly and with total ease.

(Prakash Raj with Trisha in Abhiyum Naanum)

As I said in the beginning, this list covers only Tamil movies, giving just a fractional glimpse of the versatility of Prakash Raj. If we take into consideration his performances in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi, we can realise the full extent of his enormous talent.

Which was the most one-sided cricket match ever?

29 Oct 2000, Finals, Coca Cola Champions trophy, Sharjah.

It was the finals of the tri series between Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and India. SL led under Sanath Jayasuriya remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.

On the day of finals, Sanath won the toss and opt to bat on a sunny noon. Indian bowlers made the most of the movement available early on. They reduced SL to 116/4 around 28 overs.

At the other end was the captain of SL who was playing an uncharacteristic knock. He anchored the innings for some time to avoid further collapse. Some dropped chances helped him to get his hundred in 118 balls.

And then, it was all Jayasuriya’s show. He hammered the fast bowling trio of Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar and Venkatesh Prasad for fun. In the next 43 balls, he hit 89 runs and just killed the game.

And how did he do that.. He didn't even wear helmet in the later part of his innings. What else a fast bowler can be hurt more of !!

Russell Arnold at the other end played his part with a 62-balls-52.

India had no time to look what happened with them. SL scored whopping 183 runs in last 22 overs. In the last 10 overs, they scored almost 100 runs.

Sanath Jayasuriya alone scored 63.21% of team's runs. He surely led from the front and boy, Indian shoulders were down.

300 was a big target those days. But the Indians were just mentally bruised by Jayasuriya’s epic knock. And it affected their batting.

The duo of Vaas and Muralitharan just ran through the Indian batting lineup. Indian batters fell like a pack of cards.

Vaas bowled an amazing spell of 9.3–1–14–5, while Muralitharan spun his magic with a spell of 6–3–6–3.

India were dismissed for their lowest Odi total of 54. It remains their lowest Odi total till date.

Sri Lanka beat India by a massive margin of 245 runs. Sanath Jayasuriya alone had outscored India by 135 runs.

It was one of the most one-sided match in the history of cricket.
