The purpose of Lord Rama's fire test of Sita was to prove her purity for the welfare of his subjects.

The reason behind this:

  • When Sita returned to Ayodhya after being imprisoned by Ravana for a long time, some people in the society started doubting her.
  • If Sita was not made to undergo the fire test, people would start saying that Rama is a fool and lustful person.
  • Lord Rama believed that Ravana could not torture Sita who was protected by her own radiance.
  • Lord Rama wanted that in Kaliyuga, people should not abandon their wives on the basis of suspicion.

The process of fire test:

  • Lord Rama lit a fire between him and Sita and asked Sita to enter it.
  • As soon as Sita entered the fire, Agni Dev appeared there with the real Sita.
  • Sita's shadow got absorbed in that fire and Agni Dev appeared in front of Lord Rama with the real Sita.
