Why does Lord Krishna love the flute?

Krishna loves us, although we have become indifferent to reciprocate His unrequited love. So, the flute helps Krishna send a very sweet love letter, a warm invitation letter in the form of transcendental sound vibration. He is calling us. If not for attracting us, Krishna wouldn’t have bothered to play His flute.

Krishna doesn’t like to revel in His own glories but He desires to relish loving exchanges with His dear devotees. This is the nature of Rasa. He is simply inviting us, who are too much engrossed in enjoying this material world that is full of suffering, to join His eternal pastimes.

Those who have acknowledged His love letter have never returned to the material world. Having gone mad, they are dancing in rapture. Only those who have turned a deaf ear are struggling perpetually in the cycle of birth and death.

mām upetya punar janma duḥkhālayam aśāśvatam
nāpnuvanti mahātmānaḥ saṁsiddhiṁ paramāṁ gatāḥ

After attaining Me, the great souls, who are yogīs in devotion, never return to this temporary world, which is full of miseries, because they have attained the highest perfection.- Bhagavad Gita 8.15

What was Lord Krishna's greatest life lesson?

As per my understanding, his life’s greatest lesson was that Dharma is above all and everything. He believed in this and proved this by his conduct all through his life.

In the childhood, he killed the tyrant king Kamsa, who was his uncle, as he was a great adharmi. Before that he killed many rakshasas sent by Kamsa to kill him because they also were all adharmis, just like Kamsa.

After killing Kamsa, he installed Kamsa’s father Ugrasen as the king of Mathura again instead of becoming king himself.

When Jarasandh attacked Mathura to take revenge on him for killing Kamsa, he killed his entire army but spared him so that he could again collect more adharmis and come again to kill him.

When he saw that people of Mathura could not live peacefully due to repeated attacks of Jarasnadh, he decided to leave Mathura and established the new city of Dwarka in between the sea so that none could attack it easily.

When he fled from Mathura in front of Jarasandh, Jarasndh insulted him and called him ‘ranchhod’ but Lord Krishna did not care for his insult as for him the welfare of people was much more important.

He married all 16,100 girls who were kept in captivity by Narkasur so that they can lead a respectful life in the society as nobody else was ready to accept them.

He helped Pandavas whenever they were in distress as they were righteous people.

He went to the Hastinapur royal court as the peace messenger on behalf of Pandvas as a last attempt to avert the war where he was insulted by Duryodhan and also tried to capture him.

He helped preserve the modesty of Draupadi when she was being disrobed in the Hastinapur royal court.

He was strictly against taking of any pledge by any person as the pledge may prove to be harmful in future.

In case of Bhishma, his pledge of leaving the throne of Hastinapur for his step mother Satyavati’s future sons proved to be very harmful for Hastinapur.

Drona also gave more importance to Dhritrashtra’s help and supported him despite knowing that Duryodhan was on the wrong path. Same was the case with Karna who gave more importance to Duryodhan’s friendship than dharma.

He agreed to become the charioteer for his best friend Arjun and guided & mentored him by reciting the divine knowledge of Geeta when Arjun was in a great dilemma about his duty.

He rebuked Arjun on the 3rd and 9th day of war for fighting very mildly with Bhishma and himself picked weapons to kill Bhishma as it was important for victory of dharma.

He helped Arjun reach Jaydrath and told Arjun about the boon of Jaydrath’s father to him and guided and motivated him to kill him before sunset.

He saved Arjun many times during the war, helped Pandavas in eliminating Bhishma, Drona and Karna.

He motivated Yudhishthir to kill Shalya and signaled Bheem to kill Duryodhan by striking his thigh to finally end the war.

Who is the consort of Maa Katyani, Lord Krishna or Lord Shiv?

Kātyāyanī is the wife of Śiva. In the Radha Tantra, Padminī (Radha) addresses Goddess Katyayani with deep reverence, calling her the “beloved of Śiva.” Later, in the same text, Lord Krishna prays to her for a boon to perfect his spiritual practices, saying, “I bow to you, dear to Śankara” it also notes that in the sacred circle of Mathurā, where Mahāmāyā appears as Goddess Kātyāyanī, she always resides with Śiva.

However, Kātyāyanī is also used for Śrī Lakṣmī.

Mṛtyuñjaya Tantra -

"गोविन्दमहिषीं देवीं कात्यायन्यां भयङ्करीम्,"

which directly translates to "The one who Kātyāyanī is the consort of Govinda".

In the context of Yogamaya, the Sarārthadarśinī commentary by Śrī Viśvanātha Cakravartī explains that the Yogamāyā Devī, worshipped by the gopīs as Katyayani, is Lord Krishna’s own svarūpa-śakti. The commentary uses the term patitvaṁ to indicate her status as a consort of Lord Krishna, affirming that “YogaMāyā Katyāyanī, worshipped by the Gopakaṇyas, is the wife of the Lord.” Additionally, the Brahmāṇḍa Mahāpurāṇa describes Vṛndāvananāyikā Kātyāyanīdevī incarnating as the daughter of Vṛṣabhānu, directly connecting her identity to Radha, Lord Krishna’s eternal beloved.

What is the significance of Lord Krishna’s flute?

The Krishnopanishad reveals that all the gods, desiring to be close to Krishna, placed portions of themselves into various objects in Vrindavan. It is said that the essences of Aditi and Kashyapa became the mortar and the rope, respectively; Indra’s essence manifested as the flowers in the hair-bun; and Rudra’s essence became the flute itself. What a beautiful concept—showing just how close Shiva and Keshava are.

There is a temple dedicated to Gopeshwar Mahadev in Vrindavan. Although the deity remains in the form of a Shiva Linga throughout the day, by evening, He is dressed in a saree, his hair is braided, and he is adorned with flowers. It is said that He goes to Krishna in the guise of a Gopi. Perhaps He feels that appearing as Shiva would invite too much formal reverence; as a Gopi—a devotee and an admirer—He can gaze upon Krishna to His heart's content.

Sages and the personified spirits of the Upanishads—who had long awaited liberation—were born as the Gopis.

Although the Gopis lived in constant communion with Krishna, always absorbed in thoughts of Him, they reportedly felt a sense of envy whenever they saw the flute. They would lament, wondering why they had been born as Gopis instead of as a flute, for had they been the flute, they could have constantly touched Krishna’s lips.

Our own body is like a flute with nine apertures. Scholars explain that it is only when the Lord breathes the breath of life into it that our body becomes animated with consciousness.

Why do they say Lord Krishna was black in color when Devki Mata and Vasudev both were of fair complexion?

 A Vaishnava-based answer ahead…

Actually, if you see, the color of Lord Krishna doesn’t depend on what color Devaki Mata and Vasudeva have. Because, if you see in human biology, and in that too hereditary, then the child inherits the genes of the mother and father both. But here, Krishna is not born like a mere human being. As the Bhagavata Purana itself calls Him unborn, who was about to enter the womb of Devaki. And another thing is, According to the Bhagavata Purana, Anantashesha, with the avesha of Sankarshana roopi Bhagavan (who later appeared as Balarama) was first present in Devaki's womb for 7 months and was then transferred by Yogamaya Durgadevi into Rohini's womb. After that, Lord Vishnu entered Devaki’s garbha and lived in her garbha for 3 months, after which He came out of her garbha and appeared as Krishna.

While coming to, Krishna didn’t come as a normal baby as He came in Ramavatara. He came out as a divine child wearing a crown, studded with jewels, and holding conch, discus, mace, and lotus in His four hands, with pitambara, Srivatsa mark, and all. Krishna was not born through ordinary biological processes like an ordinary human being. He manifested from the womb of Devaki by His own divine will. He appeared as the son of Devaki and Vasudeva, or more precisely, appeared from Devaki’s garbha rather than being born from Devaki’s garbha. Plus, He is Bhagavan. Since His appearance is divine rather than the result of ordinary material birth, biological inheritance cannot be treated as the determining factor for His complexion. He is always transcendental, be it as Lord Vishnu in Vaikuntha, or Lord Krishna or Lord Rama in the Bhuvaikuntha, Vrindavana/Dwaraka or Ayodhya.

SriKrishna in the BhagavadGita says:
अजोऽपि सन्नव्ययात्मा भूतानामीश्वरोऽपि सन् ।
प्रकृतिं स्वामधिष्ठाय सम्भवाम्यात्ममायया ॥ 6॥

Although I am unborn, the Lord of all living entities, and have an imperishable nature, yet I appear in this world by virtue of Yogmaya, My divine power.
[Bhagavad Gita:
Chapter 4, Verse 6]

So, why was Krishna black in color? His color is described as Neelameghashyaama, which means the color of rain-filled clouds. This color is not pure black, but bluish-black. The reason why He is black is different. In every yuga, He has different colors. In Krutayuga, it was Shuklavarna Narayana, which means the Lord was white colored. Shukla indicates knowledge, so for gyaana karya, He had Shuklavarna or white color. In Treta yuga, He was Raktavarna, which is a red-colored form. In Dvaparayuga, He came in Krishnavarna. Why Krishnavarna? To bless His dear devotees. Even Gargacharya, in SrimadBhagavatam, during the naming ceremony of Krishna and Balarama reveals Nanda Maharaja, that Krishna is none other than Lord Vishnu Himself. Even earlier He has assumed white(shukla), red(rakta) and yellow(pita) forms, and now He is present in His dark-neelameghavarna form (Krishnavarna).

[Shuklavarna Narayana]

[Raktavarna Narayana]

[Peetavarna Narayana (yellow)]

[Krishna varna Narayana]

Just to give a rough idea of the colors, I have inserted the above images. So, the dark color of Krishna is not related at all to the color of Devaki and Vasudeva. He is transcendental every time and can assume any form and any color. Didn’t He appear as Narasimha from the pillar? Srimad Bhagavata describes Him as of golden color. His beard, His face, everything was golden in color.

Hope this helps!

Why was Lord Krishna's life full of suffering when he himself was God?

Who told you Krishna’s life was full of sufferings? He is Krishna. And Krishna also means ‘full of ananda’ along with the meaning as ‘All Attractive’. If you see his story, he appeared in the jail as the son of Devaki and Vasudeva. Devaki and Vasudeva were Aditi devi and Sage Kashyapa who had done penance to get Lord Vishnu as their son. So, in first birth they were Prushni and Sutapa wherein Lord Vishnu incarnated as Prushnigarbha. In second birth they were Sage Kashyapa and Aditi devi. In that birth Lord Vishnu appeared as Vaamana and was also known as Upendra. In the next birth when they were born as Devaki Vasudeva wherein Lord Vishnu appeared as Krishna. They both had done penance to please Lord Vishnu and wanted him to appear as their son. So, thats why he appeared as their son.

Now, after appearance Krishna went to Nandagokula. There too Yashoda devi and Nanda gopa took care of him. Yashoda-Nandagopa were none other than Dharanidevi and Drona named Vasu who did tapasya to get Lord Vishnu as their son. So, Lord Krishna being the eternal Lord Srihari himself came to them. There he stayed with Balaramadeva and enchanted everyone with his baalaleelas. He stole the hearts of the Gopis along with their butter, milk and curds. He went to Vrindavana along with all the people of Nandagokula. He killed various demons and protected the people of Vrindavana. He danced on the hoods of Kaliya and lifted Govardhana parvata on his little finger effortlessly for 7 days and broke Indra’s arrogance. He played Raasakreeda with the Gopikas. By this raasakreeda he gave ananda to the gopikas. These Gopikas were also great devotees of Krishna who surrendered to Krishna wholly. They didn’t just love him as lovers. They knew the reality of Krishna. In Gopigeetam they say:

Na khalu gopika nandano bhavaan akhiladehinaam antaraatmadhruk
(You are not merely son of a Gopika [Yashoda devi], but you are the one who resides in everyone)
[SrimadBhagavatam, Dashama Skanda, Gopigeetam]

These Gopikas were the apsara strees who were born in Vraja to get the sanga of Krishna. So, after doing Katyayani Vrata, they all got Lakshmi sannidhana within them and hence did Raasakreeda with Krishna. (One must note that without Lakshmi sannidhana, Krishna doesn’t touch anyone) These Gopikas had both Mahatmya Gyaana (knowledge of the greatness of Krishna) as well as unwavering love for Krishna both combined together. And when this Mahatmya gyaana and prema (love) goes hand in hand, it results in Bhakti. Throughout the Gopigeetam and their lives, both their Mahatmya gyaana for Krishna as well as, their utmost prema for Krishna is present. Thus they were great Bhaktas of Krishna. Thus, Krishna gave immense pleasure to the Gopikas, and married the Gopikas who did Katyayani Vratam. Krishna married Neela, who was the daughter of Yashoda’s brother. He lived happily in Vrindavana.

After this, he killed Arishthasura, Keshi and Vyomasura. On the call of Akroora, he went to Mathura. Here also, Krishna was never sad for leaving Vrindavana. He is present everywhere with the same sannidhana. Be it Nandagokula, Vrindavana, Dwaraka, Kurukshetra or anything it is the same Krishna present there.

After going Mathura, he killed many asuras along with Kamsa and his brothers. He crowned Ugrasena as the king of Mathura. Krishna sent Uddhava to Vrindavana with his letter to the Gopikas. He went to Saandeepani aashram and learnt 64 vidyas in 64 days itself. Though he being the all-knowing paramatma too, he went to gurukula and studied under Saandeepani maharshi and as a guru dakshina brought his dead son back to life. Jarasandha on knowing the death of his son-in-law Kamsa, attacked Mathura, waging a revenge from Krishna for killing Kamsa. Krishna defeated Jarasandha effortlessly 18 times and at the 18th time, he went to Dwaraka and established the Yadu dynasty there.

Krishna married the princess of Vidarbha named Rukmini, who was none other than Saakshaat SriMahalakshmi devi herself. She was non-different from Lakshmidevi (Sridevi), thus married Krishna. When Satrajita, accused Krishna of stealing the Syamantaka jewel, then also Krishna was not angry or sad. He went and fought Jambavan for 28 days and won. He showed his Raama roopa to Jambavan and took the Syamantaka jewel along with a kanyamani by the name Jambavati. He married Jambavan’s daughter Jambavati. Satrajita asked forgiveness to Krishna and gave his daughter Satyabhama devi to Krishna. Krishna married Satyabhama, who was none other than saakshaat Bhu roopi Mahalakshmi devi.

He married 5 more queens namely, Kalindi, Mitravrinda, Lakshana, Nagnajiti, Bhadra. He went along with Satyabhama devi to Pragjyotishapura and killed Narakasura. One must note here that Satyabhama devi is the avatara of Bhu roopi Mahalakshmi(This Bhu roopi Mahalakshmi is different from Mother earth Bhudevi. Both are Lord Vishnu’s wives only, but this Bhudevi or mother earth had the special sannidhana of Bhu roopi Mahalakshmi devi). There after killing Narakasura, Krishna released all the 16,100 rajakumaris whom Narakasura had kidnapped. He married all those 16,100 kanyas. Now, here people doubt about Krishna’s character and question that he had 16,108 wives. But in reality these 16,100 rajakumaris were agniputras who had done penance to get Krishna as their husband, and thus were born in Dvaparayuga to marry Krishna. After Krishna released those rajakumaris, Lakshmidevi entered these Rajakumaris and thus they had Lakshmi sannidhana in them and hence Krishna married them. Another reason for him to marry these raajakumaris is that all these were kidnapped by Narakasura, so no one would marry them. So, when the whole world rejects, Krishna accepts. So, Krishna provided them refuge and married them.

SriKrishna protected the Pandavas. He along with Arjuna and Bheemasena went to Magadha and made Bheemasena kill Jarasandha. After that Dharmaraja Yudhishthira did Rajasuya yagya wherein Krishna killed Shishupala. When Yudhishthira lost the gambling game, Duryodhana tried to humiliate Draupadi and asked Dushasana to do the cheera harana. At this time also, Krishna saved Draupadi’s maana by providing Akshayambara or Akshaya vastra. Even during the Vanavasa, Krishna used to visit the Pandavas along with Satyabhama devi and protected them. He made Arjuna gain many weapons like Paashupatastra. He killed many more asuras like Paundraka Vaasudeva, Hamsa-Dibhika, Dantavakra.

Even in the Kurukshetra yuddha, Krishna gave the upadesha of BhagavadGita to Arjuna, thus removing all the confusions of Arjuna, protected Arjuna and other Pandavas, and made them gain victory over Kauravas. Then he ruled Dvaraka, blessed his dearest friend Kuchela, also known as Sudama by eating his tandoola and blessing him with immense wealth. At the end Krishna gave upadesha to Uddhava, also known as Uddhava Gita. After this Krishna ended his avatara and returned back to Vaikuntham and merged with Srihari. Krishna throughout his life, lived peacefully and happily. His name itself means that he full of eternal and purest joy or ananda. He is never affected by the trigunas. The Mahabharata itself calls him Traigunyavarjitam ajam vibhum aadyameesham.

Even during his avatara on the earth, he just acted like a human, though he showed at every step that he was God. In Ramavatara, SriRama didn’t show much that he was God, but in Krishnavatara, SriKrishna showed in each and every step that he was God. His life itself is a message that one must live his life fully and should remain the same in both happiness and sorrow. In Ramavatara, he lived the BhagavadGita, thus showing that how a person should live, whereas in Krishnavatara, he told the same BhagavadGita, and in Vyasavatara, he wrote the BhagavadGita in the Mahabharata. Krishna never suffered. He is swaramana because he doesn’t even have moha on Lakshmidevi. Lakshmidevi gets ananda from him. He is full of ananda within himself only. But he loves Lakshmidevi not as in he needs her for his ananda or has moha on her. He loves Lakshmidevi for her utmost and the highest devotion in him and she is his dearmost wife. Nobody’s devotion can equal to the devotion which Mahalakshmidevi has for Lord Krishna/Narayana. Lord Narayana though is svaramana but he immensely loves his devotees.

Hence, in a conclusion Krishna never suffered his whole life. Instead he is the supreme enjoyer who is always in ananda. His name itself means, the one who is full of supreme, eternal, pure joy and bliss. Yes, there are some instances where he cries or shows as if he is in sorrow, but its just he acting. I am not telling this out of emotion or anything. I am telling this because, see Krishna is God. He is Lord Narayana himself. Lord Krishna is transcendental or aprakrutika and has aprakrutika gunas. Be it moolaroopi Narayana or avatara roopa, both are transcendental and are unaffected by materialistic or praakrutika gunas like roga, dukkha, shoka, peeda etc. So, when Krishna is fully transcendental, and is untouched by the prakrutika gunas, how can sufferings or dukkha can even touch him? How can he suffer? So, certainly over here, since he has taken a manujaakruti or human form, he is just acting like a human for teaching the noble people how to live a quality and good life and to delude the ignorant people. That’s why he is known as Leelamaanushavigraha or Mayamaanushavigraha. Krishna doesn’t has hunger or thirst or sorrow. But for Bhaktas, he sometimes expresses these bhaavas which again doesn’t means that he literally possess those things.

Hope this helps!

Why did Lord Krishna leave Arjuna after the war of Mahabharata?

Krishna stayed in Hastinapura with the Pandavas for a long time after the Kurukshetra war.

Vaishampayana replied, ‘O lord of the earth! Having conquered the kingdom, the Pandaveyas were tranquil. Vasudeva and Dhananjaya were delighted. They sported in pleasure, like the lord of the gods in heaven. They progressively sported in colourful groves, the slopes of mountains, colourful valleys, lakes and rivers. They were like the two Ashvins in Nandana. The great-souled Krishna and Pandava found pleasure in Indraprastha. O descendant of the Bharata lineage! They entered the assembly hall and sported there. O king! They conversed and recounted the colourful stories of the war and tales of the hardships. They spoke about the lineages of the rishis and the gods. Those great-souled ones, the ancient and excellent rishis, were delighted.

  • 15, Ashwamedhika parva, Mahabharata.

Krishna then briefly returned to Dwaraka. He returned soon after during which he brought Parikshit back to life. After that Krishna remained in Hastinapura during Yudhishtira's Ashwamedha Yajna.

These are the last descriptions of Krishna with the Pandavas

Delighted, the maharathas gave him large amounts of riches. In that way, the king (Yudhishtira) humbly presented himself before Krishna, the wielder of the chakra and the gada, like Pradyumna presenting himself before Govinda. Krishna honoured the king and gave him an extremely expensive chariot that was decorated with gold and was yoked to divine and supreme horses. Dharmaraja, Bhima, the twins and Phalguna separately honoured the one who deserved to be shown respect.

  • 90, Ashwamedhika parva, Mahabharata.

However, he (Vyasa) again said, “You gave it to me. But I am giving it back to you. Give gold to the brahmanas and let the earth be yours.” Vasudeva then spoke to Dharmaraja Yudhishthira. “You should act as the illustrious Vyasa has said.” ‘Thus addressed, the best of the Kuru lineage and his brothers were delighted in their minds. They gave away crores and crores of coins, so that it was three times the normal dakshina at a sacrifice.

  • 91, Ashwamedhika parva, Mahabharata.

After the Ashwamedha was completed, Yudhishtira was firmly in power in Kuru kingdom. Krishna's purpose with the Pandavas was over and so he returned to Dwaraka. There is no further description of Krishna ever meeting the Pandavas again.

What was the biggest mistake made by Lord Krishna during the Kurukshetra War?

Biggest mistake?. Does it mean, Krishna committed several mistakes and the question is about the biggest mistake of those several mistakes?.

Is he a common man to commit mistake?. When he was born in jail, he gave darshan to parents Devaki and Vasudeva as a child with four hands and his usual weapons. He clearly declared that he is Lord Vishnu.

He killed Pootana and other demons as an infant. He lifted Govardhan hill with a finger.

Still is there any doubt about him?.

Bhishma, the most powerful warrior on kaurava side, said “ had Krishna not been with Pandavas, I would have killed all Pandavas with a single arrow “.

Krishna is Adiguru. Guru means a person who guides disciples from darkness to light.

Krishna has not done any mistake, infact he corrects mistakes of devotees and makes their lives meaningful and fruitful.

Krishna does only right actions always.

Who is Goddess Yogmaya, and how is she associated with Lord Krishna's birth?

When Kansa got to know his sister’s eighth son will kill him, he put Devaki and Vasudeva under arrest. He used to kill each of her sons and when the 7th son came, Yogmaya (Goddess Durga) delivered that son from Devaki to Vasudeva’s another wife’s Rohini’s womb. As a result, Balarama was born who was an incarnation of Adi Shesha. Then finally the eighth avatar came, Lord Vishnu’s avatar, Krishna came. He put all soldiers under sleep and opened all the doors of prison. Vasudeva put Krishna inside a basket and walked past Yamuna and put him at his friend, Nanda Baba’s house. Nanda had given birth to a daughter who Vasudeva brought with him.

When Kansa tried to kill that girl, she fled and showed her real form as Goddess Durga. She said Kansa wouldn’t achieve anything by killing her because his death has already taken birth. Yogmaya went to the Vindhya hills and appeared as Vindhyavasini Devi. She also took birth as Subhadra who was the sister of Krishna and Balarama. Even the Gopis had worshipped Goddess Katayani in the forest of Vrindavan to please her. Rukmini Devi worshipped Durga to attain Krishna. Goddess Durga was the family diety of Krishna.
