Before conquering Bollywood and performing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Nora Fatehi grew up in a Moroccan-Canadian family, teaching herself to dance by watching online videos.
Born on February 6, 1992, Fatehi spent her early years attending school in the Toronto area and later enrolled at York University to study political science and international relations. The pull of the entertainment industry prompted her to leave university and relocate to India to pursue acting and modeling.
Arriving in India, Fatehi faced immediate hurdles. She did not speak Hindi and struggled through early auditions, dealing with a highly competitive environment and unfamiliar industry practices. She made her acting debut in the 2014 Hindi thriller Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans, which introduced her to audiences but did not immediately make her a star. Over the next few years, she worked extensively in the South Indian film industry, taking on special dance appearances in Telugu and Malayalam movies.
Fatehi gained a foothold in Indian television when she entered the ninth season of the reality show Bigg Boss as a wild-card contestant in 2015. The exposure made her a recognizable face, but her career-defining moment arrived on July 4, 2018. She was featured dancing to a recreated version of the track "Dilbar" for the film Satyameva Jayate. The song became a global viral hit, accumulating hundreds of millions of views and cementing her reputation as one of the industry's premier performers.
Following the success of "Dilbar," Fatehi expanded her acting portfolio alongside her dance numbers. She secured acting roles in prominent Hindi films, including Batla House, Street Dancer 3D, and Bhuj: The Pride of India. In 2024, she starred as an influencer named Alia in the sports-action film Crakk: Jeetegaa Toh Jiyegaa and appeared as Tasha in the crime-comedy Madgaon Express.
Her popularity eventually transcended the Indian film industry. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Fatehi performed the tournament anthem "Light the Sky" during the closing ceremony. She also headlined the FIFA Fan Festival in Doha, performing hits like "O Saki Saki" and "Dance Meri Rani" for a global audience and completing a journey from an aspiring dancer in Canada to an international star.
