How vast was "Aryavarta"?

The borders of Aryavarta is roughly today's North India.

Borders of Aryavarta

The country of the Aryas (Aryavarta) lies to the east of the region where (the river Sarasvati) disappears, to the west of the Black-forest (Kalakavana), to the north of the Paripatra (Vindhya mountains), to the south of the Himalaya. The rule of conduct which (prevails) there, is authoritative.

Magadha, Anga, Kalinga etc were all considered beyond Aryavarta at this point. As per Shatapatha Brahmana, Sadanira river which formed the eastern border of Kosala and Videha was the border of Aryavarta.

The text also provides an alternative restricted definition of Aryavarta as well

Some (declare) the country between the (rivers) Yamuna and Ganges (to be the Aryavarta).

Borders of Aryavarta in manusmriti (the borders have evolved further here)

The country extending as far as the Eastern Ocean and as far as the Western Ocean, and lying between the same two mountains (Vindhya and Himalayas)—the learned know as ‘Aryavarta.’
