What are the common Bollywood clichés found in Karan Johar's films, and why do they still seem to work with audiences?

I have noticed that in all his films as a director and most of his films as a producer also someone's de**h acts as an emotional anchor for the film. It helps add an emotional layer to his films which the audience laps up.

Kuch Kuch Hota hai (1998)- the film starts with the d**th of Rani Mukherjee during child birth. It creates aot of threads- the emotional scene between SRK and his daughter when she struggles on the topic of mother; the letters of Tina for her daughter, the ploy to get SRK remarried, and Kajol’s emotional bond with SRK’s daughter after learning about the dem**e of Rani Mukherjee.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam (2001)- the old matriarch of the family is on her d**th bed and the old woman wants to unite her family which has become estranged. Hrithik Roshan takes it upon himself to bring his brother back. Eventually his plan is revealed much later in the film and Amitabh is livid at him. But then the news comes that the old lady has pa**ed away. The family unites to honour the woman and this point becomes a point of convergence eventually leading to emotional showdown and reconciliation of the family.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kahna (2006)- Two couples who are unsatisfied with each other forms a bond together. Amitabh Bachchan plays Rani Mukherjee’s father in law who discovers the relationship between SRK and Rani cheating their spouses. Amitabh soon suffers a fatal heart st**ke and on his d**th bed asks Rani to leave Abhishek Bachchan and let them all be happy. Eventually SRK and Rani decide at that moment to confess their relationship to their spouses and end the extra marital affair though things don't go the way they wanted and they are edivirved leading to a long tussle before the lovers can be united.

My Name is Khan (2010)- In the aftermath of 9/11 there is a lot of discrimination against Muslims in US. SRk plays a man with Asperger who marries a Hindu woman with a teenage son. The teenage son is targeted by a group of teenagers as a hate attack and d**s in the hospital due to injuries. Kajol consider SRK responsible for the d**th of her son because of the Khan surname so SRK takes upon himself to undo the xenophobia regarding his Muslim identity.

Student of the Year (2012)- Siddharth Malhotra is shown as an or**an who lives with his relatives with his grandmother being the emotional anchor of her life. In college he bonda with Alia and make friends with Varun Dhawan. There is alive triangle brimming between the three. But when Siddharth’s grandmother is admitted to hospital and eventually d**s Alia gives her emotional support leading to a k**s which is witness by Varun, and which leads to misunderstanding and conflict between the two guys leading to further conflicts in the film.

Ae Dil hai Mushkil (2016)- The film is about one sided love as Rnabir Kapoor continuously pursue Anushka Sharma but she rejects his advances and consider him as her friend. Eventually they separate and he forms a bond with Aishwarya Rai but is never able to forget Anushka. After breaking up with Aishwarya Rai he finds Anushka again but realise that she has ca**er and is d**ng. She tries to form a bond with her again but eventually loses her to her illness.

Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahani (2023)- Dharmendra the patriarch of the Randhawa family couldn't remember anything except the young Shabana Azmi so Ranveer Singh bonds with Alia to give hapiness to the couple.. eventually they kindle their own romance but their cultural differences create a major obstacle in their relationship following which they decide to live in each other's home for some time to adapt and convince their families. But eventually everything falls apart soon. Here Dharmendra gives a heartbreaking monologue about his dissatisfaction over the family affairs before eventually his de**se. Eventually everything ends at a happy note.

Even his produced films like Kal Ho Na Ho, Agneepath, Kalank, Shershah etc deals with the theme of d**th in a major way.

What are some cliches in Bollywood?

1 } THE RAIN CLICHE: the raining water, the water of the rain

In Normal life, if it's raining no girl would go out in Rain and get all wet because -

1- Parents scolding

2-Seriously!!! (who like wet clothes)

But in Bollywood, its necessary for the HEROINE to go out and dance in the rain so that the HERO notices you, your beauty and eventually fall in loveee.

it happens in almost every movie, If you see a woman in the rain, you will fall in love. This is the law.

2 } THE MAKEOVER CLICHE!

This is Totally absurd…. A girl (basically Heroine) would fall in love with some handsome, cute, rich guy but the guy won’t accept her or would never fall for her because-

  1. She wears Specs
  2. Braces maybe
  3. Average Look
  4. Not Slim

All I want to say is she is probably not wearing TONS of makeup and stuff and she is just being herself, because of this she isn't PRETTY anymore and the HERO doesn't fall in LOVE with her.

BUT……

AFTER SOOOOOOO MANY YEARS LATER…….(maybe few)

OMG !!

Who is she…!!

wooohhh.. wow….. amazing

here I present you

the most USED CLICHES of all TIME, THE MAKEOVER!

suddenly the HERO is not Happy(he can be) and is not that famous(but he was before) and he saw a GIRL, wow BEAUTY(the same girl he rejected), and They See each other and

OMG oh Yes , she is the same girl (with ton loads of makeup, after makeover)

and HERO suddenly falls in LOVE with her.

I mean.. what..realyy…

3 } THE ON PURPOSE ACCIDENTS/SLIPPING :

Even Daily Soaps are using it Nowadays.

why would they do this…. why…

so daramatic..my god..!!

(LAUGHING)

4 } THE AIRPORT SCENES…!!!

Seriously the AIRPORT security is soooo not secured watching this..???anyone can just barge in and do all the drama and still not get caught.

5 } Okay this is very EMOTIONAL… so emotional LAST WISH scenes.

Heroine: Please Promise me you will never cry

Hero: (oh no…. but crying is my passion) CRYING!!

Teary-eyed by now.

6 } GO TO EUROPE, SPAIN, FRANCE, AMERICA and dance

7 } HERO FIGHTING WITH THE GOONS… not one but all of ’em and without even getting hurt or anything because you know

BOLLYWOOD!!

SO that's it.. that was my take on Cliches…
