Here are some of my favorite "scary" photos
This is a well under a layer of ice, its depth unknown but estimated to be between 100 and 300 meters. It is filled with icy water, but it is so clear that it would be difficult to walk on the ice while looking down!
A similar theme, here a diver exploring an underwater cave, the darkness and the lack of equipment allowing him to breathe are what give this image a heavy atmosphere.
After reviewing his GoPro footage at the end of a surfing day, this surfer realized he wasn't as alone as he thought; luckily the shark wasn't hungry!
Once again, the darkness and the young child's vulnerability make this image chilling. I don't know where it was taken or if there are any potential threats lurking in the water, but there's something about it that sends shivers down my spine.
This image is more beautiful than frightening, but I selected it nonetheless because the chasm can be quite unsettling. It's actually an optical illusion caused by currents that move sediment along the ocean floor. The effect is created by a sudden drop off the coast of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean—it's the edge of the continental shelf where the ocean floor abruptly plunges from 150 meters to 4,000 meters deep. Aerial photos like this one show us what the sand looks like as the currents carry it from the shore to the abyssal depths.
