 Kangana was the original choice to play the lead role in, “The Dirty Picture”. The role was written specifically keeping her in mind but she rejected it.

After her rejection the role subsequently went to Vidya Balan, who delivered a critically acclaimed, award-winning performance.

Kangana turned down the offer as she was tired of playing ‘the girl on the verge of a nervous breakdown’ type roles which she had already played in Fashion and Gangster.

She also addressed her rejection publicly admitting that she could not foresee how successful the project would become. Kangana felt that she could have not played the character better than Vidya did. However, there was no regret on missing the project from her side.

There were reports of a sequel of The Dirty Picture which was again reportedly turned down by Kangana as she did not want to disturb her career trajectory or righteous on-screen image with an adult-comedy franchise at that time.

The Dirty Picture was heavily inspired by the life of South Indian actress Silk Smitha, an Indian actress noted for her erotic roles. However, the makers had already clarified that it was not an exact, authorised biography.
