What are some of the unknown facts that are true?

Here are 10 less commonly known true facts :

  1. It is possible to die from drinking too much water. Water intoxication and hyponatremia result when a dehydrated person drinks too much water without the accompanying electrolytes.

2. Bananas are slightly radioactive. Bananas contain high levels of potassium. It’s not something you need to worry about, since 0.01% of the potassium already in your body is the same radioactive type ( K - 40 ). Potassium is essential for proper nutrition.

3. About 3,00,000 children have arthritis. When most people think of arthritis they don’t associate it with children. The most popular misconception about arthritis is that it is an old person’s disease. In reality, arthritis affects people of all ages including about 3,00,000 American children. Fortunately, children tend to have a more favourable prognosis than older adults.

4. Hydrofluoric acid is so corrosive. It can dissolve glass. Even though it is highly corrosive, Hydrofluoric acid is not considered to be a strong acid because it does not completely dissociate in water.

5. Liquid oxygen is blue in colour. Oxygen gas is colourless, odourless and tasteless. However, the liquid and solid forms are a pale blue colour.

6. Fish scales are a common lipstick ingredient. Some lipstick contains lead acetate or sugar of lead. This toxic lead compound makes the lipstick taste sweet.

7. Fire typically spreads uphill more quickly than downhill. This is because temperature affects the rate of combustion. The region above a fire tends to be much hotter than the area below it, plus it may have a better supply of fresh air.

8. Water displays weird quantum effects. Ordinary water consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, but a 1995 neutron scattering experiment saw 1.5 hydrogen atoms per oxygen atom. While a variable ratio is not unheard of in chemistry, this type of quantum effect in water was unexpected.

9. Water has a glassy state. Do you think water can only be found as a liquid, solid or gas. There’s a glassy phase, intermediate between the liquid and solid forms. If you supercool water, but don’t disturb it to make it form ice, and bring the temperature down to -120 degree Celsius, the water becomes an extremely viscous liquid. If you cool it all the way down to -135 degree Celsius, you get “glassy water”, which is solid, yet not crystalline.

10. The Olympic flag’s colours are always red, black, blue, green and yellow rings on a field of white. This is because at least one of those colours appears on the flag of every nation on the planet.
