Capture Screenshots Using built-in Windows Tools [How To]

There are a number of ways to capture screenshots without any additional software in Windows. You can:

1. Capture the whole screen (and automatically save it if you have Windows 8)
2. Capture a part of the screen or a window
3. Capture a series of screenshots in a document

This guide covers the tools built in to Windows and how to use them.

Capture the Whole Screen or a Single Window

• To capture the whole screen, press the Print Screen key (often abbreviated i.e. Prt Scrn)
• To capture a window i.e. your web browser, click the window to bring it into focus and pressAlt+Print Screen

The screenshot is copied to the clipboard; you can now paste it (Ctrl+V) into Word, Paint etc. for saving.

• Windows 8 only: Press the Windows+Print Screen key to capture a screenshot and save it in Libraries\Pictures\Screenshots
  To view saved screenshots:
  • Either: Click Start, type Libraries, click Libraries, and navigate to Pictures -> Screenshots
  • Or: Press Windows Key + E open Windows Explorer, press Ctrl + L to enter an address and navigate to: Libraries\Pictures\Screenshots

Capture Part of the Screen

The Snipping tool can capture the whole screen, a selection of the screen, or a specific Window. The snipping tool is available with:

• Windows 8, Windows 8 Professional, Windows 8 RT
• Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise
• Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise

Step 1: Click the Start button, type snip, and click Snipping Tool.

Step 2: Click NewNote: To free-form clip or grab a window or the whole screen, click the down arrow next to the New button

Step 3: Select the area you wish to capture

Step 4: Optionally annotate and highlight your image:

Step 5: Save your image to your hard drive (Ctrl+S) or copy it to your clipboard (Ctrl+C):

Capture a Series of Screenshots in a Document

To capture a series of screenshots in a document, you can use the Steps Recorder (named Problem Steps Recorder in Windows 7) that’s available with both Windows 7 and 8.

To open Steps recorder: click Start, type psr, and click Steps Recorder (Windows 8) or psr.exe*(Windows 7.)

*If you’re using Windows 7, I recommend you run the program as an administrator (right click psr.exe and click Run as Administrator.)

• Once you’ve completed your steps, you can open the saved file and copy the screenshots into Word, Paint etc.
• If you want to capture more than 25 screenshots, click the down arrow next to the help icon and click Settings…; replace 25 with the maximum number of screenshots required

What is a Processor?

What is a Multi-Core Processor?

A multi-core processor is comprised of two or more independent cores, each capable of processing individual instructions. A dual-core processor contains two cores, a quad-core processor contains four cores, and a hexa-core processor contains six cores.

Why do I Need Multiple Cores?

Multiple cores can be used to run two programs side by side and, when an intensive program is running, (AV Scan, Video conversion, CD ripping etc.) you can utilize another core to run your browser to check your email etc.

Multiple cores really shine when you’re using a program that can utilize more than one core (called Parallelization) to improve the program’s efficiency and addressability. Programs such as graphic software, games etc. can run multiple instructions at the same time and deliver faster, smoother results.

If you use CPU-intensive software, multiple cores will likely provide a better computing experience. If you use your PC to check emails and watch the occasional video, you really don’t need a multi-core processor.

How many cores do i3, i5, and i7′s have?

• An i3 processor has two cores
• An i5 processor has two or four cores (depending on the model you have)
• An i7 processor has two, four, or six cores (depending on the model you have)

How Do Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad Compare with Core i3, i5, and i7?

If you’re looking for a good value PC and have decided on a Core 2 Duo, Core i3, or Core i5 (all best in value for casual computer use), please read on:

Core 2 Duo processors run two threads; i3′s and i5′s run four threads. Core 2 Duo processors are socket 775 (45/65nm); Core i3 and i5 processors are socket 1156 (nm) but only work with DDR3 RAM (Some Core 2 Duo’s work with both DDR2 and DDR3.)

For desktops, I’d stay clear of core 2 duos due to their lack of power and compatibility with the newest PC hardware; for laptops, it all depends on your usage. As laptops aren’t as easy to upgrade, buying dated technology might burn you in the future when you find your Core 2 Duo PC’s motherboard only supports 4GB RAM—for example.

i5′s come with “turbo boost”; however, i3′s overclock very well if that’s your thing. That’s where I’d put my money if you’re considering Core 2 Duo, i3, and i5: the i3 provides the best value for most casual PC users.

While I focused on i3, i5, and Core 2 Duo to answer a reader’s question, the principles apply when comparing i5, i7, and Core 2 Quad. I’d go for the i5 unless you are willing to pay a premium for a little more performance.

What Does the “i” Stand for in i3, i5, and i7?

I searched around the web and found speculation that the “i” stands for “Intel”; however, there’s no substantiation to that claim. After coming up with no explanation, I sent an email to Intel tech support. Here’s what they had to say (emphasis added) The i# processors are just branded that way with no special meaning.

Do I need an i3, i5, or i7?

The reason you’re reading this guide is to find out which type of processor you need. I want to give a simple answer and, if you have more to add, please let us know in the comments. As with all computer hardware, the type of processor you need depends on your needs, for how long you want your computer to stay current, and your budget.

Here’s a very simple breakdown of what you should look to buy depending on your computing needs. All suggestions assume you are buying a pre-built PC (so you don’t have to worry about motherboard and RAM specs and so you don’t have to worry about upgrade compatibility.)

If you:

• Browse the internet, check email, and play the occasional flash game (like Farmville): Get asingle core netbook or desktop (and don’t spend more than $300 USD — Updated 12/01/21.)

• If you do graphic publishing, music creation, programming (and compiling), watch HD movies, or like to play visually appealing games, get a quad core i5, or i7.
• If you like to have the very best hardware and play the most graphically intense games, get a quad core or hexa corei7 Extreme.

Hibernate vs. Sleep vs. Shut-Down

There are many ways to shut down and restart your computer, but – which does what, and which should you use when?

The answer depends mostly on you. Are you into saving energy or boot-up time? How often do you leave your computer and for how long?

There are three main shut-down options available in Windows: Shut-Down, Sleep and Hibernate (names may vary depending on the Windows version). In Vista and Windows 7, there is also a fourth option; Hybrid Sleep.

Let’s explore the topic.

Environmental friendly

If your concern is to save energy, and you don’t mind the longer Boot Up time – then you should always use the “Shut Down” option. This will shut down every running service and application and wipe clean your RAM. This option saves the most energy as the computer is not using any power at all when in this state. There might be some power consumption from the main-board as it is still connected to your outlet, but this is significantly little.

Hibernate Vs Sleep

The difference between the two is power-consumption – one use less power than the other.

Sleep Feature = Pause

Sleep is a power-saving state which keeps enough voltage across your RAM to retain the memory for when you “wake up” your computer again.  This mode use the most power of all the “Power-Off Modes” as the computer need to be able to keep your RAM alive. The Sleep Feature is recommended when you leave your computer for a short period (like going to lunch or step out for a few hours). Putting your computer into the sleep state is like pausing a DVD player—the computer immediately stops what it’s doing and is ready to start again when you want to resume working (usually within seconds).

Hibernate

The Hibernate function was intended primarily for laptop users (though available for Desktop Computers as well). This mode let you save much more power when not using your computer (as in saving battery). When you put the computer in Hibernate Mode, it stores the contents of your RAM (Services, clipboard etc.) to your hard-drive (hiberfile.sys) which on reboot is read back into the RAM (Read more about RAM) which takes about a minute to be completed, but on the upside you do save more energy.

Hybrid Sleep

Hybrid sleep is both Sleep and Hibernate, primarily intended for Desktop Computers. Hybrid Sleep keeps the RAM alive (as in Sleep Mode) and stores the Content of your RAM to your Hard-Drive (in case of a power failure). It also stores any open documents before putting your computer into a low-power state which allows for a quick Reboot later on. When hybrid sleep is turned on, putting your computer into sleep automatically puts your computer into hybrid sleep.

Reboot Restore Rx Automatically Restores Windows to a Previous State on Reboot:
In most shared computing environments such as classrooms, computer labs, kiosks, internet cafes, and libraries, the administrator is faced with the daunting task of having to continually keep the PCs in working condition. This includes removing unwanted programs that were installed by users, reverting undesirable changes, cleaning the computers of malware and so on.
Back in the days of Windows XP and Windows Vista, Microsoft had a program called SteadyState, which allowed administrators to lock a computer down in such a way that no changes, whatsoever, are possible to be made on the system. SteadyState will cache all changes made to a file which are then discarded when the computer is restarted thereby undoing any changes made and returning the system to its previous state.

Unfortunately, Windows Steadystate never worked on Windows 7 and on 64-bit systems. Not to mention, the product is officially discontinued since the last two years. Prior to the announcement of retiring Windows Steadystate, Microsoft published a guide explaining how one could replicate many features of Windows SteadyState on Windows 7 using tools already present on the operating system. We also rounded up several alternative solutions that helps you undo changes made to the system. Reboot Restore Rx is another worthy alternative.

Reboot Restore Rx is a freeware utility that makes it easy to maintain PC’s in public access computing environments, by configuring the computers to automatically restore to the desired baseline settings on reboot. The advantage of Reboot Restore Rx over Windows Steadystate and many of the programs in the aforementioned article, is that Reboot Restore Rx is an absolute no-brainer.
Once you install Reboot Restore Rx, the program takes the current state of the system as the baseline. Any changes you make to the system are now temporary, and will be wiped clean as soon as you restart the system.
“Students can delete files, hack the registry, download games and apps etc…. It doesn’t matter,” says Lyle Patel, President of Horizon DataSys, who makes Reboot Restore Rx. “Because after a simple reboot all changes will disappear and the workstations will be back to a pristine baseline, and ready for the next user.”
To make permanent changes to the system, like install new software or remove old ones, you have to temporarily disable Reboot Restore Rx. Once you are done making necessary changes, re-enable the program and you will be asked whether you want to make the current system as the new baseline. Choose OK, and you’ll have a new baseline state to restore to.

  ಅವಳ ಹೆಸರು ದಿಶಾ. ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಹುಡುಗರೆಲ್ಲರ ಕನಸಿನ ರಾಣಿ. ನೀಳನಾಸಿಕ, ತೊಂಡೆತುಟಿ, ಇಳಿಬಿದ್ದ ಮುಂಗುರುಳು, ನಕ್ಕಾಗ  ಗುಳಿ ಬೀಳುವ ಗಲ್ಲ, ಸಿಂಹದ ನಡು, ಎತ್ತರದ ನಿಲುವು ಅವಳದಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅವಳ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹುಡುಗಿಯರೂ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಕಿಚ್ಚುಪಡುತಿದ್ದರು. ಅವಳನ್ನು ಒಮ್ಮೆಯಾದರೂ ಮಾತನಾಡಿಸಿದರೆ ಧನ್ಯರಾಗುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಹುಡುಗರೆಲ್ಲರ ತವಕ. ಅವಳು ಕಾಲೇಜಿನೊಳಗೆ ಅಡಿಯಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳು ಅವಳತ್ತ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ಹರಿಸುತಿದ್ದವು. ಅವಳು ಮೈಸೂರಿನವಳಂತೆ, ಅವರಪ್ಪ ತುಂಬಾ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತರಂತೆ, ಒಬ್ಬಳೇ ಮಗಳಂತೆ.. ಹೀಗೆ ಏನೇನೋ ಸುದ್ದಿಗಳು ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ತುಂಬ ಮತ್ತು ಹುಡುಗರ ಬಾಯಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡ. ಕಾಲೇಜು ಕ್ಯಾಂಟೀನಿನಲ್ಲಿ, ಆಟದ ಮೈದಾನದಲ್ಲಿ, ಲೈಬ್ರರಿಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಸಂಧಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಳದೇ ಮಾತು. ಅವಳೊಲಿದವನು ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಅದೃಷ್ಟವಂತ.

  ಅಂತಹ ಅದೃಷ್ಟವಂತ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬನಿದ್ದ. ಅವನ ಹೆಸರು ಸೂರ್ಯ. ಅವಳ ಕ್ಲಾಸ್‍ಮೇಟ್. ಅವನೂ ಸ್ಫುರದ್ರೂಪಿ. ಅವಳಷ್ಟೇ ಎತ್ತರ. ಆದರೆ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಲ್ಲ. ಅವರಪ್ಪ ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಡ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕ. ಅಮ್ಮ ಶಾಲೆಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕಿ. ಸೂರ್ಯ ಅವರ ತಂದೆತಾಯಿಗೆ ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಅವನು ಅಪ್ಪ ಅಮ್ಮ್ಮಂದಿರ ಕಣ್ಮಣಿ. ಅವನ ಪಾದಗಳಿಗೂ ತುಸು ನೋವಾಗದಂತೆ ಅವರು ಅವನನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿದ್ದರು. ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ದಿಶಾಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಎಲ್ಲರಂತೆ ಕನಸುಗಳಿದ್ದುದು ನಿಜ, ಆದರೆ ಅವಳು ನನಗೆ ನಿಲುಕದ ಗಗನಕುಸುಮ ಎಂಬುದು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಮನದಟ್ಟಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಎಲ್ಲ ಹುಡುಗರಂತೆ ಅವನೂ ಅವಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಮುದಪಡುತ್ತಾ ಕಣ್ಣೋಟದಲ್ಲೇ ಸುಖಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಕಾಲ ಕಳೆಯುತಿದ್ದ. ಆದರೆ ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಅವನ ಅದೃಷ್ಟದ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತೆರೆಯಿತು. ದಿಶಾ ಅವನ ಲ್ಯಾಬ್ ರೆಕಾರ್ಡ ನೀಡುವಂತೆ ಕೇಳಿದಳು. ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಆಕಾಶ ಕೈಗೆಟುಕಿದಂತಾಯಿತು. ಲ್ಯಾಬ್ ರೆಕಾರ್ಡ ನೀಡಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದವನಿಗೆ ಮೈಯೆಲ್ಲಾ ಪುಳಕ, ಮನದಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ಕನಸುಗಳು.

  ಹೀಗೆ ಶುರುವಾದ ಪರಿಚಯ ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಎದೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುರಾಗದ ಪುಷ್ಪವನ್ನು ಅರಳಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಯಾವುದೋ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತ ಹೆದರಿಕೆ ಅವನನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಯದಂತೆ ತಡೆಯುತಿತ್ತು.  ದಿಶಾ ಇವನು ಕಂಡಾಗಲೆಲ್ಲಾ ಒಂದು ಮೋಹಕ ಮುಗುಳ್ನಗೆ ಬೀರುತಿದ್ದಳು. ಇವನ ಎದೆ ಡವಗುಟ್ಟುತಿತ್ತು. ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಧೈರ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿ ಆಕೆಯ ಮೊಬೈಲಿಗೊಂದು ಫೋನು ಮಾಡಿಯೇಬಿಟ್ಟ. ಅವಳೂ ಹರ್ಷಿತಳಾಗಿಯೇ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿದಳು. ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಪಾಠಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಶುರುವಾದ ಮಾತುಕತೆ ಸಿನೆಮಾಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಶಾಪಿಂಗ್ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ರೆಸ್ಟೋರೆಂಟುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸುಳಿದಾಡತೊಡಗಿತು. ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಸೂರ್ಯ ದಿಶಾಳಿಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗತೊಡಗಿದ. ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಮೈಛಳಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಹಂತ ತಲುಪಿದರು. ದಿನವೂ ದಿಶಾ ಅವನಿಗಾಗಿ ಕಾಯತೊಡಗಿದಳು. ಸಂಜೆ ಹುಡುಗಿಯರ ಹಾಸ್ಟೆಲಿನ ಮೂಲೆಯೊಂದರ ಬಳಿ ಬಂದು ಸೂರ್ಯ ನಿಲ್ಲತೊಡಗಿದ. ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಮೊದಮೊದಲು ಇದ್ದ ಹಿಂಜರಿಕೆ ಮಾಯವಾಗಿ ದಿಶಾಳ ಜೊತೆ ತಿರುಗುವುದು ರೂಢಿಯಾಯಿತು.

  ದಿಶಾಳ ಬಳಿ ಒಂದು ಐಷಾರಾಮಿ ಕಾರು ಇತ್ತು.  ಒಂದು ದಿನ,  ಹೀಗೆ ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಕಾರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದೂರ ದೂರ ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಂಡು ನಗರ ಸುತ್ತುವ ಬದಲು ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೊಬ್ಬರು ಒತ್ತಿ ಕುಳಿತು  ಜಾಲಿರೈಡ್ ಮಾಡಲು ನೀನ್ಯಾಕೆ ಒಂದು ಬೈಕ್ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬಾರದೆಂದು ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಅಂತಸ್ತಿಗೆ ದುಬಾರಿಯಾದ ಸಲಹೆಯೊಂದನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದಳು. ಅವನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಅಪ್ಪ-ಅಮ್ಮಂದಿರ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದರೂ ಅದ್ಯಾವ ಮಹಾ..ಒಂದು ವಾರ ಸಮಯ ಕೊಡು.. ಬೈಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಸ್ಟೆಲಿನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಹಾಜರಾಗುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡಿದ. ಅಪ್ಪ-ಅಮ್ಮನ ಬಳಿ ಬೈಕು ಕೊಡಿಸುವಂತೆ ಅಲವತ್ತುಕೊಂಡ. ಇರುವುದು ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ, ಅವನ ಆಸೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸದೇ ಹೋದರೆ ನಾವು ಬದುಕುತ್ತಿರುವುದಾದರೂ ಯಾರಿಗೋಸ್ಕರ ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡರು ಅವನ ಅಪ್ಪ-ಅಮ್ಮಂದಿರು. ಅಪ್ಪ ತನ್ನ ಭವಿಷ್ಯ ನಿಧಿಯಿಂದ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹಣ ಸಾಲ ತೆಗೆದ. ಅಮ್ಮನ ಕೈಯ್ಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಚಿನ್ನದ ಬಳೆಗಳು ಮಾಯವಾದವು. ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೊಂದು ದುಬಾರಿ ಬೈಕು ಸಿಕ್ಕತು. ಮುಂದೆ ಸೂರ್ಯ, ಅವನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಅವನಿಗೊತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡು ದಿಶಾ.. ಪ್ರಪಂಚವೇ ಬದಲಾಯಿತು. ಬೈಕು ದಿನಾ ಎಲ್ಲೆ ಮೀರಿದ ವೇಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಗರದ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಓಡಾಡತೊಡಗಿ ಉಳಿದ ಹುಡುಗರ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ಕುಕ್ಕತೊಡಗಿತು. ಇಷ್ಟಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರೇಮ ನಿವೇದನೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳದಿದ್ದರೆ ಆದೀತೇ..? ಸೂರ್ಯ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಸಂಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಓ ದಿಶಾ.. ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಣಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ..’ ಅಂದ. ದಿಶಾ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿ ನಕ್ಕಳು. ‘ ಓ...ಕೆ.. ನಾನೂ ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ ಸೂರ್ಯ..’ ಎಂದು ಅವನ ಕೆನ್ನೆಗೊಂದು ಸಿಹಿಮುತ್ತು ನೀಡಿದಳು. 

  ದಿನಗಳು ಕಳೆದವು. ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದಿಶಾ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆನಿಂತಳು. ಭವಿಷ್ಯದ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಹೊಂಗನಸು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾ ಸೂರ್ಯ ತೇಲತೊಡಗಿದ. ದಿಶಾಳಿಗೆ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಆಸರೆಯಾದ. ಅವಳು ಬಹು ಸಂತೋಷದಿಂದ ಸಮಯ ಕಳೆಯತೊಡಗಿದಳು. ಪದವಿಯ ಕೊನೆಯ ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದದ್ದು ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ತಿಳಿಯಲೇ ಇಲ್ಲ.

  ಸೂರ್ಯ ಒಂದು ದಿನ ತನ್ನ ಅಪ್ಪ-ಅಮ್ಮನ ಬಳಿ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಹುಡುಗಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡ. ಅವರು ಹುಡುಗಿಯ ಜಾತಿ, ಅಂತಸ್ತು ಯಾವುದಕ್ಕೂ ತಲೆಕೆಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಗನ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಅವರದು. ಮೇಲಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಅವಳ ಜೊತೆ ಕಳೆಯಬೇಕಾದವನು ಅವನು. ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೊಬ್ಬರು ಇಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ಪಾದಾರ್ಪಣೆ ಮಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮಿಗಿಲಾಗಿ ಇನ್ನಾವ ಮಾರ್ಗವಿದ್ದೀತು ಜಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂದು ಸಂತೋಷಪಟ್ಟರು. ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಸಮಾಧಾನವಾಯಿತು. ದಿಶಾಳನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಕರೆದು ತಂದು ಅಪ್ಪ-ಅಮ್ಮಂದಿರಿಗೂ ಅವರ ಭಾವೀ ಸೊಸೆಯನ್ನು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿದ. ಎಲ್ಲದಕ್ಕೂ ಮುಗುಳ್ನಗುತಿದ್ದ ದಿಶಾಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಅಪ್ಪ-ಅಮ್ಮನೂ ಮಗನ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಿರಾಳವಾದರು.

  ಒಂದು ದಿನ ದಿಶಾ ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದಳು. ‘ಸೂರ್ಯ.. ನನ್ನ ಪಪ್ಪಾ ನನಗಾಗಿಯೇ ಎಂದು ಒಂದು ಬಂಗಲೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.. ಮುಂದಿನ ಭಾನುವಾರ ಅದರ ಗೃಹಪ್ರವೇಶ. ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ನಿನಗೊಬ್ಬನಿಗೇ ಆಹ್ವಾನ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದು.. ಬರಬೇಕು.’ ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಅತೀವ ಆನಂದವಾಯಿತು. ‘ನನ್ನ ದಿಶಾ.. ನನಗೊಬ್ಬನಿಗೇ ಆಹ್ವಾನ ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾಳೆ.. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ನಾನೊಬ್ಬನೇ ಅವಳ ಹೃದಯಸಿಂಹಾಸನಾಧೀಶ್ವರ..’ ಅವನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಕುಣಿಯಿತು. ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಗಿಹಿಡಿದು ಭಾನುವಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕಾಯುತಿದ್ದ.

  ಭಾನುವಾರ ಬಂದೇ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿತು. ತನ್ನ ಅಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ವಿಷಯ ತಿಳಿಸಿ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆಯೇ ಹೊರಟ. ಬಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಹೋಗು ಅಂದ ಅಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ನಾನೇನೂ ಸಣ್ಣಮಗುವೇ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿ ನಕ್ಕು ಬೈಕಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಹೊರಟ.  ಅಮ್ಮ ‘ನೀನು ಎಷ್ಟು ದೊಡ್ಡವನಾದರೂ ನನಗೆ ನೀನು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಗುವೇ.. ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜೋಪಾನ..’ ಎಂದಳು. ಸರಿ ಎಂದವನು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ತನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರೇಮಗೀತೆಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಗುನುಗಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೊರಟ.

  ಮೈಸೂರು ತಲುಪಿ ದಿಶಾ ನೀಡಿದ್ದ ವಿಳಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿದ್ದ ಜನರನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ದಿಗಿಲಾಯಿತು. ಜನರಷ್ಟೇ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯ ಕಾರುಗಳು ಬಂಗಲೆಯ ಮುಂದೆ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದವು. ದಿಶಾ ಬಂಗಲೆಯ ಟೆರೇಸಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸುಂದರ ಯುವಕನೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದವಳು ಇವನನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿದು ಬಂದು ಸ್ವಾಗತಿಸಿದಳು. ನನ್ನ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಆತ್ಮೀಯ ಗೆಳೆಯ ಇವನು.. ಹೆಸರು ಸೂರ್ಯ ಎಂದು ಅವಳ ತಂದೆ-ತಾಯಂದಿರಿಗೆ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿ ಬಂಗಲೆಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಲು ಒಳಗೆ ಕರೆದೊಯ್ದಳು. ತಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಲಿವಿಂಗ್ ಹಾಲ್‍ನಷ್ಟೇ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಶುಭ್ರವಾಗಿದ್ದ  ಸ್ನಾನದ ಮನೆ ನೋಡಿ ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ತಾನು ಎಲ್ಲಿರುವೆನು ಎನಿಸಿತು. ದಿಶಾ ಖುಷಿಯಿಂದ ಬಂಗಲೆಯ ಮೂಲೆ ಮೂಲೆಯನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ತೋರಿಸಿ ಮೇಲೆ ತಾರಸಿಗೆ ಕರದೊಯ್ದಳು. 

  ಅವಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಇದ್ದ ಯುವಕ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದ. ‘ಸೂರ್ಯ.. ಇವನ ಹೆಸರು ಹರ್ಷ. ನಮ್ಮ ತಂದೆಯ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರ ಮಗ.. ಈ ಮನೆಗೆ ಪ್ಲಾನ್ ಹಾಕಿಸಿ ನಿಂತು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದವನು ಇವನೇ.. ಮುಂದಿನ ವಾರ ಇದೇ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮಿಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಮದುವೆಯ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತಾರ್ಥ ಇದೆ..’ ದಿಶಾಳ ಮುಂದಿನ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಕೇಳಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ಯಾರೋ ಬಂಗಲೆಯಿಂದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಬಿಸಾಕಿದಂತಾಯಿತು. ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳಿಗೆ ಕತ್ತಲೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿದಂತಾಗಿ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಕುಸಿದ. ದಿಶಾ ಅವನನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದೆತ್ತಿ ‘ಏನಾಯ್ತು ಸೂರ್ಯ..’ ಎಂದು ಕೆನ್ನೆ ತಟ್ಟಿದಳು. ‘ಹರ್ಷ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನೀರು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬಾ..’ ಎಂದು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಕನಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದ ಯುವಕನನ್ನು ಕೆಳಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದಳು. ಅವನು ಅತ್ತ ಹೋದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಗದ್ಗದಿತನಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿದ. ‘ದಿಶಾ.. ನೀನು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಿದ್ದು ಸುಳ್ಳಾ..’ ದಿಶಾ ಸಣ್ಣಗೆ ನಕ್ಕಳು. ‘ಅಯ್ಯೋ ಸೂರ್ಯ.. ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ ಅಂದ ಒಂದೇ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಭಾವುಕನಾಗಿದ್ದೀಯಲ್ಲೋ... ಸಮಯ ಕಳೆಯಲು ನನಗೆ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಹುಡುಗನ ಸಾನಿಧ್ಯ ಬೇಕಾಗಿತ್ತು .. ನೀನು ಸಿಕ್ಕೆ ಅಷ್ಟೇ..  ಹರ್ಷ, ನನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ಬುಸಿನೆಸ್ ಪಾರ್ಟನರ್‍ರ ಮಗ.. ಅವನು ಆಗರ್ಭ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ. ನನ್ನ ತಂದೆ-ತಾಯಿ ನನಗಾಗಿ ಅಳೆದೂ ಸುರಿದೂ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಿದವನು..’ ಅವಳು ಹೇಳುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ  ನೀರು ತಂದ ಯುವಕನಿಂದ ಗುಟುಕು ನೀರು ಕುಡಿದ ಸೂರ್ಯ, ನಡುಗುತಿದ್ದ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ‘ನಿಮಗಿಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದಾಗಲಿ..  ನಿಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನ ಸುಖಕರವಾಗಿರಲಿ..’ ಎಂದ. ದಿಶಾ ಥ್ಯಾಂಕ್ಸ್.. ಅಂದಳು. ಬಂಗಲೆಯಿಂದ ಇಳಿಯುವ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಕಡೆ ಹೊರಟವನಿಗೆ ದಿಶಾ ‘ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿ ಹೋಗಬೇಕು ಸೂರ್ಯ..’ ಎಂದಳು. ‘ಹೂಂ.. ಓಕೆ..’ ಎಂದ. ಅವನ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ತುಂಬಿತ್ತು. 

  ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಇಳಿಯುತಿದ್ದವನಿಗೆ ದಿಶಾಳಿಗೆ ಕೊಡಲೆಂದು ತಂದಿದ್ದ ಮಾರ್ಬಲಿನ ಜೋಡಿಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳ ಸಣ್ಣ ಗೊಂಬೆ ಜೇಬಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಉಳಿದಿದ್ದು ನೆನಪಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ವಾಪಾಸು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಹತ್ತಿದ. ಅವನನ್ನೇ ದಿಟ್ಟಿಸುತಿದ್ದ  ದಿಶಾಳ ಕೈಗೆ ಗೊಂಬೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ತನ್ನೆದೆಯ ನೋವನ್ನು ನುಂಗಿಕೊಂಡು ನಗುನಗುತ್ತಾ, ‘ದಿಶಾ.. ನೀವಿಬ್ಬರು ಸದಾ ಈ ಜೋಡಿಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳಂತೆಯೇ ಇರಲಿ ಎಂದು ಮನಃಪೂರ್ವಕವಾಗಿ ಹಾರೈಸುತ್ತೇನೆ..’ ಅಂದವನೇ ತಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡದೆ ದಡದಡನೆ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಇಳಿದು ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ನಡೆದು ನಿಂತಿದ್ದ ಬೈಕಿನ ಬಳಿ ಬಂದ.

  ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತ ಏನು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆಯೆಂಬುದರ ಅರಿವು ಅವನಿಗಾಗುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬೈಕು ಹತ್ತಿದವನೇ ಸ್ಟಾರ್ಟ ಮಾಡಿ ಕೊನೆಯ ಬಾರಿಯೆಂಬಂತೆ ತಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡಿದ. ದಿಶಾ ಅವನತ್ತಲೇ ಓಡೋಡಿ ಬರುತಿದ್ದಳು. ಬಂದವಳೇ ಅವನ ಕಣ್ಣಗಳನ್ನೇ ನೋಡುತ್ತಾ ನಿಂತುಬಿಟ್ಟಳು.  ತನ್ನೆರಡೂ ಕೈಗಳಿಂದ ಅವನ ಕೊರಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ, ‘ಸೂರ್ಯ... ಸೂರ್ಯ.. ನಾನು ಯೌವ್ವನದ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಬಿಸಿಲು ಬಿದ್ದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಕರಗಿಹೋಗುವ ಇಬ್ಬನಿಯೆಂದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯಲೆಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ನಾಟಕವಾಡಿದೆ. ನಿನ್ನದು ಇಬ್ಬನಿಯಂತಹ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲವೆನ್ನುವುದು ತಿಳಿಯಿತು.. ನಿನ್ನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಬಿಸಿಲು ಬಿದ್ದರೂ ಆವಿಯಾಗಿ ಖಾಲಿಯಾಗದ ಸಾಗರದಂತಹ ಪ್ರೀತಿ.. ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬದುಕುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ನನಗಿಲ್ಲ ಸೂರ್ಯ..’ ಎಂದ ದಿಶಾಳ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳಿಂದ ಕಣ್ಣೀರು ಧಾರೆಯಾಗಿ ಹರಿಯತೊಡಗಿತ್ತು.

A train station envisioned for the town of Sevastopol in Ukraine seems to be perpetually covered in clouds, topped with a light, helium-lifted structure inspired by airships. ‘Under the Cloud‘ consists of a passenger terminal building and a buoyant freeform canopy that hovers over the green roof of the main building.


The canopy shell has an aluminum frame with longitudinal and transverse trusses, the helium gas held inside a rigid framework in bags. With the guy lines securing it, it really does seem as if it could lift away into the sky at any moment.

Says designer Arthur Kupreychuk, “The supporting structure of the canopy is similar to the structure of an airship. The canopy strives upward by buoyancy forces, if its average density is less than the density of the atmosphere.”


What’s the purpose of this canopy? Judging by the designer’s other projects, it may just be for fun. Kupreychuk previously designed The Draft Parking Lot with the Car Service Station, another airship-inspired structure “conceived as the embodiment of the boundless creative thought of an architect, who often must try to restrict it and leave it unfulfilled.” This concept won the distinction of being “the most surreal project designed in ArchiCAD” in 2011.

Context – that is the key to taking the ordinary and making it amazing in this series of displaced homes soaring up from forgotten streets of Paris. The results float like an intentionally mundane version of Pixar’s UP, or a modern-day urban Wizard of Oz Tale.

Laurent Chehere picks a range of dwellings, but most are dilapidated and seem perhaps sad in their crowded urban environment. She takes photographs of local buildings, tents and trailers, then photoshops their surroundings into something radically new.

Some are slathered in graffiti – others shown with clotheslines in everyday use. To this, she adds a few whimsical gestures – power lines, strings of lights, earthward ladders and other odds and ends to tie down each piece like a balloon and keep it from floating away.

One consequence of ripping these from the ground and setting them in the sky is simply an enhanced focus on an otherwise-connected building. In these isolating images, townhouses become standalone works, and we start to see them differently.
