How can it be true that there are only about 10^80 atoms in the universe? Surely it must be vastly more than that.

 Infinitely more by all means however, as with everything else?, it's only an estimate.

1×10⁸⁰ atoms is based on the visible universe, its galaxies, stars, planets, comets, and asteroids.
