Why was Myanmar separated from India?

Why was Myanmar separated from India?
  • Separatists : A group of educated Burmese did not like growing Indian influence in Burma particularly in trade and commerce.
  • Rangoon - a global city- had many prosperous Indians in all walks of life.
  • Simon commission : Perhaps, at their behest; in 1930, Simon Commission led by Sir John Simon- a British parliamentarian- recommended separation of Burma and India.
  • Economics : Many Burmese and British merchants felt that Burma was losing a huge amount around 68 million in revenue to British India.
  • This revenue was allegedly being used by British regime in various military and civil campaign- North West Frontier Province (in modern day Pakistan-Afghanistan) and other regions.
  • Burma Act 1935 : Thus, on 1st April 1935; Burma was officially separated from British India by Government of Burma act.
  • 1937 : In 1937, Burma adopted its own constitution and started its own general administration . But, it remained British colony.
  • Ba Maw : A Burmese barrister and politician was appointed Premier of Burma . He remained premier for two years. He resigned from parliament for opposing Burma participation in 2nd world war.
  • Independence act : Burma became fully independent through Burma Independence Act 1947. It gained independence on 4th January 1948.
  • Conclusion : Indians suffered double whammy during 2nd world war.
  • Note :From 1989, Burma is known as Myanmar and Rangoon as Yangon.
