Why does London have two major airports (Heathrow and Gatwick)? Why didn’t they just build one extremely large one?

 London doesn't have two major airports—it has six. Instead of a single mega-hub, the busiest city airspace on Earth was cobbled together from 1930s grass airfields and WWII military bases.

This fragmented network of Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, London City, and Southend handles over 170 million passengers a year. The system was never centrally planned; it evolved organically based on historical timing and geography. Heathrow began in 1929 as a small private airfield called the Great West Aerodrome, which was requisitioned and expanded for military use during the war before being converted to civilian use. Gatwick followed a similar path, starting as a small aerodrome in the 1930s. As commercial aviation exploded in the mid-20th century, the government simply upgraded the scattered infrastructure that already existed.

By the time the concept of a central mega-airport gained traction in the jet age, London was already a densely populated metropolis surrounded by a legally protected "Green Belt." Unlike cities in the American West that could annex thousands of acres of empty prairie to build a sprawling new hub, London had nowhere to put one. The lack of space is so severe that when the city needed a new airport for business travelers in the 1980s, engineers had to squeeze a single short runway onto a narrow strip of land between the waterways of the Royal Docks.

Politicians did try to build a consolidated airport. In the 1970s, the UK government drafted a plan to build a four-runway mega-airport on reclaimed land at Maplin Sands in the Thames Estuary. The project was cancelled due to the 1973 oil crisis and high infrastructure costs. The idea was resurrected in the 2010s by then-Mayor Boris Johnson as the "Thames Estuary Airport" (dubbed "Boris Island"). That proposal was also scrapped. The cost of linking a brand-new coastal airport to central London via high-speed rail, combined with the environmental impact on bird habitats and the threat of sea fog, proved insurmountable.

Instead, the existing airports specialized. Heathrow operates as the primary hub for long-haul flights and legacy carriers. Gatwick handles a mix of long-haul and European leisure flights. Stansted and Luton are dominated by low-cost carriers like Ryanair and EasyJet. This multi-airport system makes London highly resilient and competitive, allowing different airlines to cater to specific markets without overwhelming a single facility.

Which airports are the most pilot-friendly to land and take off?

It has the longest runway in the world with total length of 7,5 miles or 12,1 kilometers.

It is located in a desert with absolutely no obstacles around.

And the reason why it is so long?
Space shuttle used to land there! The reason why it needs such a long runway is 
safety.

Specifically:

The space shuttle only has one chance to land. If something goes wrong (chute (the main tool used to slow down) may not deploy, the shuttle could land farther than expected, too much speed etc.) and the runway is not long enough, the shuttle may crash, because there is no opportunity for taking off again like a plane and giving it another try.

The reasons why it cannot just try again are:

  1. The space shuttle, from the aerodynamic point of view, is basically just a flying brick. There is no way those tiny winglets you see on it could produce enough lift for it to take off. They are just there for support.
    1. The reason there are no wings is the speed at which space shuttle enters the atmosphere. It enters the atmosphere so fast that it has to orbit around the Earth for a while to slow down. Such speed would literally rip the wings off.
  2. Even if space shuttle had wings large enough, there is no fuel left during landing. It would not be possible to take off again.

So if a pilot manages to screw up a landing on a runway which is dedicated for space shuttles, they seriously deserve their license taken away.
