Shahrukh Khan was deeply passionate about doing Chak De! India and dedicated immense effort to the project.
He took on the role of Kabir Khan as a heartfelt tribute to his late father and because of his own personal history of playing hockey in college.
However, he was highly disappointed after watching the first cut along with Aditya Chopra and director Shimit Amin thinking that they had made the worst film ever.
There was a contrast in reactions. On one side the seniors sat in the trail with despair and on the other hand the young female actors were celebrating and dancing as they were thrilled to see themselves on the big-screen for the first time.
Shahrukh, along with the producers and director believed that the final product was poorly made leading them to mentally accept a box-office flop before its release. They were already bracing themselves to tell people that they had simply made what they wanted to make, regardless of the commercial outcome.
Fortunately, their assessment on the final product proved wrong as Chak De! India was a well made film and turned out to be a commercial success.
