What is the story of Bandhasura? How did Lalitha Mata slay him and his army?

When Mahadeva reduced Kamadeva to ashes, a Shiva gana made an effigy from those ashes and gave life to it. The boy bowed down to Mahadeva and got two boons.

1. To get 50% power of his enemies during battle

2. His arrows should make the missiles and weapons of his enemies to fail.

Lord Brahma said Bhand Bhand to the boy which means to be fortunate. Therefore, he is being called as Bhandasura.

During the battle, Bhandasura first sent a demon named Durmada along with ten Akshauhini of army to fight against Lalitha Devi. Lalitha Devi was so quick in shooting arrows that no one could see the arrows discharged. Durmada hit Lalita Devi and removed a precious gem from her crown. Lalitha Devi’s eyes became red and became extremely angry. She discharged an arrow towards the chest of Durmada which killed him. The army division assigned to Durmada fled away in fear.

Kuranḍa, the elder brother of Durmada went forward with twenty Akshauhini of army to take revenge on Lalita Devi. Lalita Devi launched a divine noose which got multiplied by thousands and started decimating the army of the demons. Kuranḍa immediately cut off the string of Devi’s bow. Abandoning the bow, Devi went forward and struck Kuranḍa with her goad. This ended the life of Kuranḍa. Out of frustration, Bhandasura started abusing Devi.

Bhandasura next sent a hundred Akshauhini of army with five Daityas to lead them. Seeing the huge army, Devtas got frightened. The battle became intense and stream of blood was so profuse that even elephants were carried away by the currents. There was a demoness named Sarpini who launched crores of serpents from her mouth which destroyed the army of the Devtas in large number.

Goddess Nakuli Devi(Mongoose) rode on Garuda and saw the destruction caused by the serpents. She opened her mouth and the tips of the thirty two teeth of goddess Nakuli Devi turned into thirty-two crores of mongooses. These mongooses attacked and killed the serpents. Finally Nakuli Devi launched Garuda weapon on Sarpini which killed her.

Nakuli Devi single handedly fought all the five generals of Daityas. The mongooses entered the mouths and ears of Daityas and started to bite them. Daitya generals then attacked the mongooses with their arrows which made the mongooses to retreat. Nakuli Devi fixed a terrible missile on her Sharanga bow. Mongooses, crores in number, issued forth from that missile which consumed almost entire hundred Akshauhini of the Daityas army. Nakuli Devi then chopped off the heads of the five generals of Daityas. Remaining foot soldiers surrendered to Nakuli Devi. Nakuli Devi told the Daityas army not t o be afraid and narrate the news of the war to Bhandasura.

Bhandasura then sent thirty Akshauhini of army with seven generals. Initially the Daityas had upper hand. Goddess Mahamaya entered the battlefield in her aerial chariot and showered arrows which terrified the Daityas. Goddess Tiraskarani launched a missile named Andha which blinded the seven generals. Then she killed them using her sword. The Saktis then slaughtered the army. Few soldiers survived and reported the news back to Bhandasura. Bhandasura started to cry hearing the terrible news of the destruction of his army.

Bhandasura next sent twenty five Akshauhini of army with his brother Visanga to lead. Fifteen Akshauhinis attacked from rear and ten Akshauhini attacked from front. A group of Sakti deities named Nitya marched forward and destroyed the army in just three hours. Visanga then fled in fear.

Thirty sons of Bhandasura was then sent with two hundred Akshauhini of army. Kumarika, the nine year old daughter of Lalitha Devi showed interest in the war and got the permission from her mother. Kumarika shot Narayana missile which killed entire two hundred Akshauhini of army. She then discharged thirty arrows simultaneously which decapitated the heads of the thirty sons of Bhandasura.

Younger brother of Bhandasura named Visukra brought a machine and through the use of Maya, he made all Saktis inactive and lazy. Lord Ganesha entered the battlefield and destroyed the machine. This restored the Saktis back to their senses. The army of Lord Ganesha fought with Visukra‘s army which consisted of thirty Akshauhini. Visukra fled from the battle fearing for his life. Visukra and Visanga were killed by Dandanatha (commander in chief of Lalitha Devi) on the next day along with their four hundred Akshauhini army.

Finally Bhandasura came to the battlefield with two thousand Akshauhinis. Bhandasura was mounted on an excellent chariot yoked by thousand lions. Every divine missiles of Bhandasura failed against Lalitha Devi.

Bhandasura created thousands of Hiranyakshas. They started killing the Saktis. A huge white Boar rose up from the nail of the right hand middle finger of Devi Lalitha. The boar single handedly killed all the Hiranyakshas. Bhandasura then created crores of Hiranyakashipus. From the right hand ring finger of Devi Lalitha, Janardana appeared with the face of a lion and body of a man. He quickly slaughtered all the Hiranyakashipus originated by the eye brows of Bhandasura. Bhandasura then launched a weapon which created Asura Bali. Hundreds of Vamanas came out from the small finger of the right hand of Lalitha Devi. They tied with nooses all the Balis (Asura Bali) born of that missile. Thus they destroyed that missile too. Bhandasura next launched Haihaya missile which created thousands of Kartavirya Arjunas. Angry Parashurama rose from the left hand thumb nails. Within few moments, Parashurama destroyed all the Kartavirya Arjunas. Bhandasura created Ravana, Kumbakarna and Meghnad. From the index finger of left hand of Lalita Devi, Kodanda Rama appeared along with Lakshmana. Rama killed Ravana and Lakshmana killed Meghnad. Bhandasura next launched Dvivida weapon which created many monkeys. Balarama rose up from the left hand middle finger of Lalitha Devi. He destroyed all those monkeys born of Dvivida missile. Bhandasura next launched Rajasura weapon which created Sisupala, Dantavaktra, Salva, Paundraka, Rukmi, Putanna, Narakasura, Mura and many more. Lord Vishnu rose from the ring finger of left hand of Lalita Devi. He made a Chaturvyuha which is Vāasudeva, Samkarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha. They destroyed all those demons. Bhandasura then launched Kali missile which created many evil kings. Janardhana named Kalki rose up from the small finger of the left hand of Lalita Devi. Riding on the horse, Kalki killed all the evil kings. All the incarnations of Lord Vishnu left to Vaikunta.

Lalita Devi took up Narayana missile and reduced all the Akshauhinis to ashes. Then by the Pashupata missile, she killed all the Asura generals. Only left out was Bhandasura. Lalita Devi took up Mahakameshwar missile and killed Bhandasura with it. The flames of Mahakameshwar missile burnt down the city of Bhandasura.
