It used to be a hobby, in our friend group, to seek out and watch the worst movies we could find. We watched the classic ‘so bad they’re good’ films like ‘The Room’ and ‘Birdemic’, of course, but we also found some really obscure movies which are just as horrible.
The biggest WTF moment of any movie I’ve ever seen comes from ‘2010: Moby Dick’, a retelling of the ‘Moby Dick’ story set on a nuclear submarine.
Most of the movie is pretty boring, to be honest. It’s just a bunch of guys talking about a whale on a cheap submarine set. But then comes the climactic battle, when our heroes land on a tropical island, because, ‘the safest place to hunt a whale is from the land’ 😂
The CGI whale obliges them and starts rearing up out of the water while they shoot at it with pistols and rifles. Then comes the greatest moment in cinema history:
The whale simply swims out of the water, onto the land, and starts sliding around like a snake. Nobody seems surprised by this. It does a stunt jump off a mountain and lands on a guy, crushing him, before swimming back into the water.
Soon afterwards, the island is struck by a nuclear torpedo:
And the plucky female protagonist is somehow ‘thrown clear’ of the explosion to emerge unscathed from the water.
It really feels like they shot all the submarine scenes, realized the film needed an ending, and had about two days to finish it. And at a certain point the director just threw up his hands and said ‘fuck it, the whale can swim on land now.’
Not really a film I’d recommend. But if you’re in the mood to see a whale do a stunt jump off a mountain, I’m pretty sure it is literally your only option.
