What are the unknown facts about Raja Raja Cholan?

 

  1. This pic of RajaRajacholan with Karur thevar , is the only painting widely accepted as RajaRajan (See bottom not able to attach here )
  2. Among the tamil kings , rajarajan was the first to have a dedicated army , whereas other kings gathered an army only when needed.
  3. An important title of Raja Rajan is “kandhaloor saalai kalamarutharuliya ko rajakesari vanmarana Sri rajaraja Devan” - காந்தளூர்ச்சாலை கலமறுத்தருளிய கோராஜகேசரி வன்மரான ஶ்ரீ ராஜராஜ தேவன்
  4. People were so fond him even when “Uthama cholan” was in reign - after knowing his involvement in aaditha cholan death.(Brother of Raja Rajan)
  5. RajaRajan had at least 15 wives - in inscriptions he mentioned them as “nam pendugal” நம் பெண்டுகள்
  6. He had 3 daughters , the 3rd Daughter name is not known (there is no inscriptions with her name ) and Son is Rajendra .
  7. He married his Sister’s Daughter - ilangon pichiyar (இளங்கோன் பிச்சியார்) born to kundhavai and vallavarayar vandhiya thevar (remember ponniyin selvan)
  8. The inscriptions of his period starts with the word “swasthiskar” Sanskrit word which means மங்களம் உண்டாகட்டும்
  9. He was aware of the importance of water bodies and it’s management which made him form the “aayakatu sabai “ - a board to take care of water bodies , irrigation needs etc
  10. Thai Pongal was not a festival for Farmers and festival for rain god Indiran was prominent . This can be known from ,

“இழுது செய்யினுள் இந்திரத் தெய்வம் தொழுது நாற்று நடுவார்” - சேக்கிழார்

He was so attached to his Sister kundavai , that he treated her above his wives , the below inscription :

“ஸ்ர் ராஜராஜீஸ்வரமுடையார்க்கு நாங்கடுத்தநவும் அக்கன் குடுத்தநவும் நம் பெண்டுகள் குடுத்தநவும் மற்றும் குடுத்தார் குடுத்தநவும்”

He mentions his Sister before his Wives .. this inscription is important in another aspect that , he treated all equally ,and made sure apart from donations made by king’s family even things given by normal people should also be mentioned in inscription.
