Apple's $5 billion "Spaceship" headquarters isn't firmly attached to the earth. It rests on 692 steel saucers, letting the ground violently shift beneath it while the building sits perfectly still.
During a severe seismic event, the ground can move up to four feet in any direction while the 2.8-million-square-foot ring stays stationary, protecting both the employees and the glass facade.
Steve Jobs made his final public appearance on June 7, 2011, pitching the Cupertino City Council on a headquarters that would look "like a spaceship landed." What resulted is a 175-acre campus that functions more like a self-contained ecosystem than a traditional office building.
One of the campus's defining features is its relationship with the outdoors. The building is designed to "breathe." Its natural ventilation system draws in outside air, meaning the structure requires no artificial heating or air conditioning for nine months of the year.
The architecture pushes the limits of material science. The exterior consists of 800 panels of curved glass—the largest pieces of curved glass ever produced for a building. These panels provide unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape, which was designed to recall the Santa Clara Valley before it became Silicon Valley. Apple planted over 9,000 drought-resistant trees, including functioning apple, apricot, cherry, and plum orchards inside the central courtyard.
The campus also operates entirely on renewable energy. The dark roof of the main ring is not just an aesthetic choice; it houses a 17-megawatt solar installation, one of the largest corporate solar roofs in the world. On peak days, the building generates more power than it consumes, feeding the excess back into the local Cupertino grid.
