At first glance, the photograph below resembles a scene from an ancient era. It was taken in December 1911.
This is the Delhi Durbar, a gathering held to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. Over 100,000 attendees, including Indian royalty, British officials, and troops, assembled on a sprawling plain. The rigid visual hierarchy in the photograph—the monarchs elevated under a domed pavilion, surrounded by endless ranks of subjects—projected the British Empire at its absolute zenith. It was at this exact event that the King abruptly announced the capital of British India would move from Calcutta to Delhi, redrawing the political map of the subcontinent. The image represents foreign rule designed to look permanent and unshakeable.
Thirty-nine years later, that empire was gone. On January 26, 1950, India officially adopted its new Constitution.

In 1911, power was a spectacle imposed from above by an empire. By 1950, the authority to govern had shifted to a constitutional republic drafted by one of its most marginalized citizens, who simply sat in the audience to watch his work take effect.
