Have there been any notable actors or filmmakers who openly criticized or boycotted the Filmfare Awards? What were their reasons?

 There have been many people from the film fraternity who have openly criticized the filmfare awards or boycotted it.

People who refused to take filmfare awards- In 1956, Vaijyantimala refused to take Filmfare best supprting actress award for Devdas where she played Chandramukhi, because she believed she was equally the lead actress of the film not a supporting actress.

For similar reason Reena Roy refused best supporting actress filmfare saying she was the lead

Pran refused filmfare Best supporting actor award for Be Imaan not because of himself but because he was unhappy that the Filmfare for Best Music was not given to Pakeezah and was awarded to his own film Be Imaan. Pran had the audacity to take a stand against his own film and this strained the relationship between him and Manoj Kumar (the lead of Be Imaan).

People who openly criticized Filmfare for partiality

Mala Sinha criticized the filmfare for not giving her filmfare award ever due to politics. When Dharmendra was given his lifetime achievement award he complained that he never got awarded during his lifetime..

Shatrughn Sinha in an interview mocked Rajesh Khanna for buying the filmfare award for Saccha Jhootha which should have gone to Sanjeev Kumar for Khilona.

Shakti Kapoor Claimed he was asked money to win Best Supporting actor filmfare for Dhanwan in 1981.

Amitabh Bachchan once said that he didn't win the filmfare for Khuda Gawah because he was asked to throw a grand party in lieu of the award. He refused and Anil Kapoor threw a big party in lieu of the award for Beta.

Manoj Shukla/Muntashir criticized filmfare for choosing Apna Time aayega over Teri Mitti me Mil for Best Lyrics filmfare.

Kangana Ranaut publicly called out filmfare for being unethical and refused to accept her nomination for Thalaivi after which her nomination was removed.

Vivek Agnihotri similarly called out filmfare awards and refused to acknowledge the nominations for Kashmir Files

Shahid Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgan, Emraan Hashmi have criticised the filmfare awards and have largely refrained from participating in them.

How do big film banners like YRF and Dharma seem to dominate the Filmfare Awards, and does this impact the recognition of other talented actors or films?

 Not completly True. Apart from particlar years when the banner delievered a major Blockbuster like 1995, 1998 or 2003, YRF and Dharma didn't dominated the Filmfare Awards. Let's see the data.

YRF was launched in 1973 and since then they have produced 90+ films (including their Y Films which produced films like Love ka the end and Mujhse Fraandship Karoge). which has won around 95 filmfares and 16 National Awards (i am not including films like Deewar and Trishul because they were not produced by YRF but directed by Yash Chopra). I am expecting a few more Awards this year for Siayyara so the count will increase to near 100 if the filmfare is not delayed further.

More than YRF i think it was the popularity of the YRF SRK pairing and the success of the family movies they made during 90s and early 2000s that contributed to most of their Awards. So before SRK YRF pairing, YRF made 14 films which earned 15 filmfares and 2 National awards. SRK and YRF worked in 10 films together which collectively won 40 filmfares and 6 National Awards (not including his cameo in Saathiya). This was the pairing which dominated the Awards with 10 filmfares for DDLJ, 7 for DTPH, 4 each for Mohabbaetin, Veer Zaara and JTHJ, 5 for CDI, 2 for RNBDJ and Darr and 1 each for Fan and Pathaan. Apart from this pairing the other YRF films which won major Awards were Lamhe (5 filmfares 1 National, Hum Tum (5 FF, 1 National), Saathiya (6 FF) etc.

Now lets look at Dharma. Dharma has done much better even without SRK even though in the beginning it was the Srk Dharma Pairing which made it a brand. Dharma Productions was started by Yash Johar but it struggled before Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. In the 50 years Dharma has produced 67 films which have won 80 Filmfares and 13 Nationals. Out of this, SRK Dharma pairing has yielded 25 Filmfares and 4 National awards in the 5 films they have worked in (Kuch Kuch Hota hai and Kal ho na Ho both won 8 filmfares and 2 National awards, K3G won 5 filmfares, MNIK 3, KANK 1). The other successful films of Dharma include Shershah (7 filmfares 1 National), Brahmastra (5 filmfares 4 National), Kill (6 filmfares), Rocky aur Rani (4 FF, 2 National) etc.

Apart from late 90s and early 2000s Yashraj and Dharma has not really dominated the Awards. Yes many of their Awards looks manipulated and that needs to be called out. But I guess nowadays every award ceremony is largely manipulated.

Who deserved the Filmfare award for best actress in 2012? Vidya Balan or Priyanka Chopra?

 Priyanka chopra's portrayal of an autistic girl was so awkward and not genuine. It just emphasised Bollywood high-handedness in actually figuring out symptoms of a developmental disorder and going beyond-

• Making silly facial expressions
• Talking in a funny way
• Awkward walking
• Jerky eye movements and slow blinking.

Priyanka Chopda did not deserve any awards for her blank expressions and awkward movements interspersed with wide-eyed slow blinking, which did not require any acting skills.

The problem is not just in this movie:

Aamir Khan who is supposed to be a good actor made such a mockery of people with disorders in his portrayal of a person with asperger's syndrome. He was so creepy and silly. So much for acting. Pathetic Pathetic.

IMHO, Hrithik Roshan's best role till date was in Koi Mil Gaya. He was a natural at being weird and talking in high pitched squeals and of c slow blinking. I have met several kids with developmental disorders and nobody(!) behaves like this.

The best of the lot yet nowhere close to genuine perfromances like that of
Sean Penn in I am Sam.

People with development disorders are just caricatures in Bollywood movies just like any character which is slightly deviant from 'normal' - like LGBT, south-indians, feminists even.

At least we have progresses from a blanket term of 'pagal' for everything like in the movies of 70s-80s.

Moral of the story: Priyanka didn't deserve it.

Why did Madan Mohan never win a Filmfare Award?

 It's really surprising that a music composer like Madan Mohan who was mainly productive in the late 50′s, 60′s and early 70′s never received a Film Fare Award. Overall Madan Mohan often had difficulty finding assignments as he was not a part of a group.

There were actors who were also studio heads and had preferred composers like Dilip Kumar - Naushad, Dev Anand - R.D. & S. D. Burman, Raj Kapoor - Shankar JaiKishan etc.

Keeping the above factor aside here is a brief analysis as to how many times Madan Mohan was nominated as best music director and to whom he lost the black lady.

Madan Mohan was nominated first time for Anpadh. Though Anpadh had good songs, the other tough contendor was Hemant Kumar for Bees Saal Baad but the award went to Shankar Jai-Kishan for Professor.

His next nomination was for Woh Kaun Thi? and seriously, Lag jaa gale deserved an award but the contenders were Shankar-Jaikishan for Sangam and Laxmikant-Pyarelal for Dosti. This was a tightly contested race. We all know that each and every song of Dosti is popular even today. So, again a miss for Madan Mohan.

His third nomination was for Gulzar's Mausam. The other nominees were Khaiyyam for Kabhie Kabhie, R. D. Burman for Mehbooba, Kalyanji-Anandji for Bairaag and Ravindra Jain for Chitchor. Khaiyyam won it for Kabhie Kabhie.

Madan Mohan's fourth nomination was posthumous. His unused compositions were re-created by his son Surinder Kohli in 2004 for Veer-Zaara. The music was like a breeze of fresh air. This time the other nominations were Anu Malik for Main Hoon Na and Murder, Jatin-Lalit for Hum Tum, A. R. Rahman for Swades and Pritam for Dhoom. The award went to Anu Malik for Main Hoon Na.

My personal opinion is that this time it could had been Madan Mohan (no doubt Main Hoon Na had good tracks and a modernised qawalli after a long time) but just for the freshness of the compositions of Veer-Zaara which were 4–5 decades old.

What elements of Suniel Shetty's performance in "Dhadkan" earned him the Filmfare best Villain award, and how does it differ from his other roles?

 In the film Dhadkan which was released in 2000, Suniel Shetty portrayed the role of Dev Chopra, a stubborn with rough and tough attitude. He wants to get back his girl friend Anjali (Shilpa Shetty) even after her marriage with Ram Verma (Akshay Kumar).

To gain Anjali back, Dev collects enough wealth as her father, a wealthy person rejected to give her daughter's hand to him though she wanted to marry him because Dev was a poor person, he doesn't know who is his father and Anjali’s father didn't like his attitude or behaviour also.

Suniel Shetty‘s Dev’s character in Dhadkan was a tough one, he forces Anjali to leave her husband and to come back with him, when she rejects him for the second time he couldn't sustain and he tries to ruin Ram's life.

But when he sees unconditional love of Ram towards Anjali, Dev changes his mind and he accepts to marry his business partner Sheetal Verma (Mahima Choudhary) who loves him very much. Finally the film gets happy ending.

Before the film Dhadkan, Suniel Shetty was usually doing hero roles and supporting roles that too as an action hero he gave good performances in several films like Mohra, Border, Gopi Kishen and Rakshak. In Hera Pheri he did a comedy role but for the first time he did villain role in Dhadkan, it was a new experience for the audience to see Suniel Shetty in that get-up. But he did the role of Dev impressively and effortlessly, he was well suited for that role and he won his first Filmfare Award though he was nominated earlier for Filmfare Best Supporting Actor for the films Dilwale and Border.

After Dhadkan Suniel Shetty portrayed negative roles in several films such as Khel in 2003, Baaz in 2003, Main Hoon Na in 2004, Rudraksh in 2004, No Problem in 2010 and A Gentleman in 2017. But his role in Dhadkan got much popularised and brought him Filmfare Award for Best Villain and this is the only Filmfare Award he won so far.

Suniel Shetty doesn't consider his Dev’s role in Dhadkan is fully a negative role because in the film he is a true lover and he struggles to get back his love at any cost and later compromises for the good of his lover.

Who was the first actor or actress to reject a Filmfare award?

 Vyjayanthimala rejected Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1957.

The production of the original Devdas (1955) involved several big actresses leaving the project. Director Bimal Roy was willing to have Meena Kumari as Paro and Nargis as Chandramukhi opposite Dilip Kumar as Devdas.

Meena was left out because her husband Kamal Amrohi set some unrealistic conditions which Roy didn’t accept. The role went to Suchitra Sen eventually.

Nargis left because she wanted to play the more important role of Paro. Bina Rai and Suraiya left for the same reason.

Ultimately, the role of Chandramukhi was given to Vyjayanthimala. Screenwriter Nabendu Ghosh didn’t approve of Vyjayanthimala’s casting, but they couldn’t waste any more time.

Devdas earned critical acclaim and over 1 crore rupees at the box-office, making it the 10th highest-grossing film of the year.

At the 4th Filmfare Awards (1957), Dilip and Motilal won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively. Vyjayanthimala was awarded Best Supporting Actress but rejected it saying that she deserved Best Actress because her role was as important as Suchitra’s Paro.

Vyjayanthimala became the first actress to refuse a Filmfare award.
