Yeh Dil Deewana tells a story of restless unfilled longing and inner turmoil of Shahrukh's character as he seeks escape through frantic activities like driving and bungee jumping.
There are many stories related to this song. Subhash Ghai wanted to shoot the song in US but the song was not ready. So he suggested Anand Bakshi to write something on Dil.
Anand Bakshi just twisted the line Yeh Dil Deewana. The song was made in two days and recorded at a studio in Andheri, just one day before the US schedule. Sonu Nigam recorded the song in three different layers within a few hours.
He was instructed by Ghai to give a raw high-energy vocal delivery as if he was ‘striking a hammer’. He also suggested him to sing with immense pain and push himself to such absolute limit that blood should come into his mouth. After the recording Sonu took a tissue and showed Ghai the trace of blood in his mouth.
Sonu also added the song's famous impromptu “ah!”s deliberately as a homage to his idol, pop star Michael Jackson.
On the day the song was supposed to be shot in US, Shahrukh had to leave to Mumbai as Gauri was pregnant. Ghai advised Shahrukh to just drive the car and he will manage the rest of the shoot. The first portion of the song is their journey from Los Angeles to Newada airport.
Ghai had urgently filmed a few close-up shots of Shahrukh and shot the rest of the long-distance and driving scenes using a body double.
The song acted as a milestone in Sonu Nigam’s career as he was mostly known for singing sad and melancholic tunes. Yeh Dil Deewana shifted the perceptions showcasing the versatility and originality of Sonu Nigam.
