A big mistake can be made by a big man. Raj Kapoor was totally engrossed in the subject. If you give a deep thought no director dared to follow the two intermission funda. Raj Kapoor tried it in Sangam and Mera Naam Joker.
It worked out in Sangam but Mera Naam Joker had a deep message and was treated as a novel covering three chapters of life indicating childhood, youth and old age (in one way end of a career). In all these shades Raju was the same a joker spreading love and entertainment to others and not expecting anything in return. His character was of a honest man.
The childhood crush of a student on his teacher is shown beautifully with a level of purity. He feels he is a sinner and therefore confesses his sin. His love with the circus trapeze artist could not find its way still he was happy.
When his mother comes to know that his son is a joker and dies in front of him in the audience, he continues to perform. He is able to give the expression of grief with humor in that scene. He moves forward in life and finds a friend in the form of Padmini who shows how difficult it is for a lady to survive.
Still when he comes to know that she is a girl (disguised as a boy ) he feels bad because she had hidden the truth. Anyways, he helps her to make her career and remains a joker.
At last keeping aside all his sorrows he invites everyone for his last performance indicating his love for all no matter he only received pain and tears and that's the life of a joker to hide his sorrows and try to make people laugh.
The film was different and therefore the main reason it failed at the box-office. Secondly, the audience were not that matured at that time and the proof is that the film received a cult status later. Technically the length of the film was a big issue but a maker like Raj Kapoor will not bother about the fate of the film. As a filmmaker he just carried on with the soul of the film. Financially he invested a lot in the movie not bothering whether his message reached the masses or classes. Raj Kapoor termed it his favourite film and described it as having deep philosophical depth and meaning. Film experts label it as a “misunderstood masterpiece”.
No matter the film flopped, at least he was successful in conveying a short message and that is, “the show must go on”. The film also ends with a caption stating, “Positively not the end”.
