How could Veda Vyasa have written all those books (The 4 Vedas, The Puranas, and The Mahabharata) considering they are said to have been written hundreds of years apart? I understand he is considered Immortal, but am I missing something?

 First of all, let me make it clear that Lord Vedavyasa is not just immortal but Bhagavan Vishnu Himself, who incarnated in the 28th Dvapara yuga and took the Vyasa position. So yes, coming to the first part of the question. No one writes the Vedas. They are Apaurusheya, which means they are not composed by anyone. They are eternal and always praise Bhagavan.

The Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Atharvaveda, history, puranas, arts, upanishads, verses, aphorisms, elucidations, and explanations are all the
breath of this Great Reality (Brahman). From It indeed are all these breathed forth.

[Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (2.4.10)]

In accepting the concept of an unauthored statement (the Veda), no arbitrary assumptions are needed. Furthermore, its unauthored nature (Apaurusheyatva) is self-evident (Svatah Siddham).

[SriVishnu Tattva Vinirnaya by SriMadhvacharya]

From that ultimate cosmic sacrifice (of the Supreme Purusha), the
Richas (Rig Veda) and the Samans (Sama Veda) were born. From That the poetic meters were born, and from That the Yajus (Yajur Veda) was born.

[Purusha Sukta, Rigveda]

Plus, the Vedas are flawless and don’t have any contradictions. That’s why they are placed at a higher authority when the Purana statements contradict each other. If a Purana statement is against the Vedas, Upanishads, Brahma Sutras, and the Bhagavad Gita, it must be ignored, because that statement is kept there for delusion, to separate the ignorant people from the devoted noble people. Hence, the Vedas are not composed by anyone and hence are Apaurusheya.

Wherever a contradiction is seen between the Shruti (Vedas), Smriti, and Puranas, the statement of the Veda (Shruti) must be accepted as the ultimate authority. If there is a conflict between Smriti and Puranas, the Smriti is superior.

[Vyasa Smriti]

"All those traditions (Smritis) that are outside the fold of the Veda, and all those despicable systems of philosophy based on distorted logic (Kudrishti), are completely useless and produce no reward after death; for they are explicitly declared to be founded upon the mode of darkness (Tamas).

[Manu Smriti]

Vedas, being eternal, were divided into parts earlier by Lord Vishnu Himself in the form of Hayagriva. But still, people couldn’t understand the correct meaning and purport of the Vedas. Hence, that same Bhagavan Vishnu incarnated as Lord Vedavyasa and divided the Vedas into 4 parts, namely Rik, Yajus, Sama and Atharvaveda respectively. That’s why He is known as Vyasa. But still, there were some places where there were possibilities to have contradictions in the Vedas if not understood properly. That’s why Lord Vedavyasa wrote the Brahma Sutras. The Brahma Sutras contain small formula-like statements, clarifying the true meaning of the Vedas.

This truth has been sung by the great Rishis in many different ways, in various distinct Vedic hymns (Chandas), and especially stated in the aphorisms of the Brahma Sutras, which are structured with flawless logic (Hetumadbhiḥ) and are completely decisive (Viniścitaiḥ).

[BhagavadGita, Adhyaya 13, Shloka 5]

Lord Vedavyasa, after dividing the eternal Vedas, composed the Mahabharata, and then took part Himself along with Krishna in the Mahabharata. The Puranas are NOT MAN-WRITTEN. Lord Vedavyasa compiled the Purana Samhita and divided it into the eighteen Mahapuranas

That greatest of men (Vyasadeva) divided the one, single Veda into four distinct divisions to ensure the continuation of sacrifices. Furthermore, the Itihasas (histories like Mahabharata) and the Puranas are declared to be the fifth Veda." (The subsequent verses name his disciples, confirming he handed the compiled Puranas over to Romaharsana).

[SrimadBhagavatam 1.4.19–20]

The great expert in the meaning of ancient lore (Vyasadeva) compiled the Purana Samhita using core narratives (Akhyanas), secondary episodes (Upakhyanas), allegorical verses, and chronicles of various cosmic cycles (Kalpas). The great sage Vyasa then handed over this compiled Purana Samhita to his renowned disciple, the Sutta named Romaharsana.

[Vishnu Purana 3.6.4–5]

So, in the case of the Vedas, Lord Vedavyasa divided them into 4 Vedas and composed the Brahma Sutras. He even composed the Mahabharata, which is the Itihasa, and then divided the Purana Samhita into 18 Mahapuranas. How could He write so much? Because He was none other than Bhagavan Vishnu Himself, who incarnated to spread true knowledge among people. He is non-different from Bhagavan Vishnu, and nothing is impossible for Bhagavan Vishnu. Hence, He could write these granthas like the Mahabharata and the 18 Puranas.

Salutations to Vyasa, who is the form of Vishnu, Vedavyasa roopi Bhagavan Vishnu. Repeated salutations to him who is a treasure house of Vedic knowledge, and who is a descendant of the lineage of Sage Vashishta.

[Mahabharata, Vishnu Sahasranama]

O great sage! In every Dvapara Yuga, Lord Vishnu Himself takes the form of Vyasadeva. For the ultimate benefit of the world, He takes the single, unified Veda and divides it into multiple parts.

[Vishnu Purana, 3.3.11–12]

Thereafter, in the seventeenth incarnation of Godhead, the Lord appeared in the womb of Satyavati, born from Sage Parashara... Seeing that humanity in general would become less intelligent, He divided the desire-tree of the Veda into various branches.

[SrimadBhagavatam 1.3.21]

Why could He compose all these works? Because He is Bhagavan Vishnu Himself, who is the extolled deity in the Vedas. Therefore, Lord Vedavyasa composed all these great works, showing His eternal and pure mercy upon us.

Know that Sage Krishna Dvaipayana (Vedavyasa) is none other than the Supreme Lord Narayana Himself. For who else on this earth, other than the lotus-eyed Lord Vishnu, could have composed the magnificent epic Mahabharata?
[Vishnu Purana 3.4.5]

Hope this helps!

How was Veda Vyasa born? How was he conceived?

 Lord Vedavyasa is none other than Saakshaat Bhagavan Vishnu Himself, who incarnated to spread the correct knowledge and compile the Vedas and Puranas.

✨ WHY DID LORD VEDAVYASA APPEAR ON THIS EARTH??
Long ago, in our country, there was a time of famine, due to which the people had to stay hungry and starving. Sage Gautama was in his ashrama, performing all the religious austerities, pleasing Bhagavan Vishnu with his devotion. All these people, including Brahmins, came to his ashrama. Sage Gautama invited them in and welcomed them with respect.

Sage Gautama, being a great Sage, had the crops growing in his field. He gave all of them food and shelter. Sage Gautama also enlightened them with pure knowledge. After some time, when the famine went away, the Brahmins wanted to go to their respective homes, but Sage Gautama insisted that they stay in his ashrama for some more time.

Here, in Kailasa, Umadevi was sitting in Lord Shiva’s left lap. She saw Ganga flowing from Lord Shiva’s jataa. Umadevi had to bring the Ganga down. For this, She called Her son Ganesha and asked Him to somehow bring Ganga down. Lord Ganesha came down to the earth and saw the Brahmins in Sage Gautama’s ashrama. He came and asked about the matter, to which they all told Him the matter.

Lord Ganesha said, “Do one thing. Make a cow with your mantra shakti and keep it in the field. Make it graze over the grass, such that as Sage Gautama touches the cow, it should die and he would be getting the Gohatya dosha. After that, you can leave for your respective houses.” As per Lord Ganesha’s plan, they made a cow with their mantra shakti and made it graze the grass.

Now, as Sage Gautama came there, He touched the cow, and the cow died. Immediately, the Brahmins said, “O Sage Gautama! You have performed Gohatya, and hence, we cannot stay here anymore.” Saying this, they all left His ashrama. Now, Sage Gautama pondered as to how this occurred. Then, He saw with His divine vision all that happened at the scenes without His knowledge. Thus, as he learnt that this was done by the Brahmins, He fed, gave shelter, and gave knowledge all these days. He was angry at this and cursed all that, “May all the knowledge that you all have gained vanish away!” Now, to revive the cow, Sage Gautama requested Lord Shiva to rain down Ganga on the cow. Thus, Lord Shiva, pleased with Sage Gautama, opened His jataa and allowed Ganga to flow down.

As Ganga came down and touched the cow, it was alive again, and the river flowed from there. This was known as Godavari. It is Go + Daa + Vaari. Since the Ganga water (Vaari) revived the cow (Go daa), it was known as Godavaari. Now, it is said as Godavari. Here, a serious problem had happened due to the curse of Sage Gautama. People started to misinterpret the Vedas, Puranas, Itihasas, Upanishads, etc., and used to have incorrect interpretations of the Shaastras.

All the devatas, worried by this, went to the Ksheerasaagara, led by Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva. There, Bhagavan Vishnu was reclining on the Ananta Sheshadeva. All the devatas prayed to Bhagavan Vishnu to incarnate on this earth to spread the correct knowledge of the Shaastras. Therefore, Lord Vishnu, on hearing the pleas of the devatas, assured them that He would be incarnating as the son of Satyavati and Sage Parashara.

✨ LORD VEDAVYASA’S APPEARANCE
Here, Sage Parashara had done a penance to get Bhagavan Vishnu Himself as His son. Pleased by His ardent devotion, Bhagavan Vishnu appeared in front of Him and said, “O Holy Sage! I am pleased by your penance. Soon, I myself will appear as your son. My devotee Vasuraja has an excellent daughter; When he was on a hunting trip once, he thought of his wife and ejaculated there itself.

He handed over the semen to a kite for it to reach his wife; When it fought with another kite, that semen fell into the waters of the Yamuna; It was consumed by a female fish inside that water; Fishermen later caught that fish. From its womb, twins were born; The children, one boy and one girl, were handed over by the fishermen to their chieftain; He gave them to Vasuraja; He kept the boy with himself and handed over the girl child to the chieftain (Daasharaaja);

Later, that boy came to be known as Matsyaraja. That girl has grown up as an extremely beautiful lady in the house of Dasharaja; Satyavati is her name; Even though I do not have any birth, I will be born in her as your son.” Saying thus, Bhagavan Vishnu disappeared.

Sage Parashara now approached Satyavati. Satyavati was such a girl that even the Sages who did penance for thousands of years and had won their senses were attracted to Her. Such was Her beauty. Satyavati used to make people cross the rivers in a boat. Now, Sage Parashara approached Satyavati and asked her to row the boat towards the island.

They both sat in the boat, and there, Sage Parashara told Satyavati that She was a daughter of Vasu, and how due to a curse She ended up taking birth like this.” On reaching the dvipa or island, Satyavati and Parashara married. After this, Bhagavan Vishnu entered Sage Parashara, and after that He entered the womb of Satyavati, that island itself. After that, He appeared from Satyavati’s womb as a 7-year-old boy. He was holding Gyaana and Abhaya Mudra in His hands.

He was named Krishna. That’s why He is also known as Vaasista Krishna. Sage Vasista’s son is Sage Shakti. Sage Shakti’s son is Sage Parashara. That’s why He is known as Vaasista, and Krishna is His name. Since He appeared in a dvipa or island, He is also known as Krishna Dvaipayana. Now, after the appearance of Lord Vedavyasa, Sage Parashara turned Satyavati again into a Kanya, with His tapasya shakti. Sage Parashara had to obtain Bhagavan Vishnu as His son, so He united with Satyavati. But now, His wish was fulfilled, and He was already detached from the material world.

Therefore, He made Satyavati a Kanyaka, as She was before marrying Sage Parashara, and went for His further penance. Lord Vedavyasa promised Satyavati that, whenever She called Him, immediately He would be present there, and He went for spreading the right knowledge. He stayed in the Urdhva Badari, which is the upper Badari in the Badari Kshetra. In that Kshetra itself, Bhagavan Vishnu was present as BadariNarayana or Badarinaatha Bhagavan.

Lord Vedavyasa, in Urdhva Badari, gave the Upadesha and correct meaning and purport of the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, etc. to every devata and others, in whom Kali Purusha had entered in the form of false knowledge. Thus, He removed the Kali Purusha from everyone and made them full of correct, pure, and flawless knowledge. Since He sits under the Badari tree, which is Lakshmi Herself, and He is the ultimate master of Lakshmidevi or Badari kshetra, He is known as Baadaraayana.

✨ POSITION OF VYASA AND WORKS OF LORD VEDAVYASA:

Vyasa’s position changes in every Mahayuga of the Manvantara. 1 Mahayuga means 4 yugas, namely Kruta/Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali. When these 4 yugas are complete, it is known as a Mahayuga. In the current 28th Mahayuga, Bhagavan Vishnu Himself came as Krishna Dvaipayana and took Vyasa’s position. In the next 29th Mahayuga, Ashvatthama, also known as Drauni, will be the next Vyasa.

Not only in this 28th Dvaparayuga did Bhagavan Vishnu incarnate as Vedavyasa, but Lord Vedavyasa appeared in the same Vaivasvata Manvantara (current Manvantara) in:

1. Third Dvaapara Yuga

2. Seventh Dvaapara Yuga

3. Sixteenth Dvaapara Yuga

4. Twenty-fifth Dvaapara Yuga

5. Twenty-eighth Dvaapara Yuga

Talking about Krishna Dvaipayana Vedavyasa, who is Bhagavan Vishnu Himself, compiled all the Vedas. Earlier, the Vedas were infinite, and people were incapable of comprehending the true meaning and essence of the Vedas. Therefore, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Hayagriva and divided the Vedas and made them simpler for people to comprehend. But then also, people had a problem that they couldn’t understand the Vedas. Therefore, Lord Vishnu Himself incarnated as Lord Vedavyasa, and then compiled the Vedas and divided them into 4 parts, namely, Rigveda, Yajurveda, Saamaveda, and Atharvaveda. Therefore, He is known as Vedavyasa. He composed the Brahma Sutras.

In the Vedas, there were some places where we can feel like contradictions. So, it would lead to a thought process that the Vedas are self-contradictory, which is not the case. In order to eliminate this wrong thought process, Lord Vedavyasa composed the Brahma Sutras, which are like short formulas that clear the contradictions of the Vedas or the doubts in the Vedas. The Brahma Sutras have 4 chapters, known as Paadas. As in the Ramayana, we have 7 Kaandas; in the Mahabharata, we have Parvas; in the Srimad Bhagavatam, we have Skandas; in the same way, in the Brahma Sutras, we have 4 Paadas, namely:

  1. Samanvaya Adhyaaya
  2. Avirodha Adhyaaya
  3. Saadhana Adhyaaya
  4. Phala Adhyaaya

In this, there are short formulas like Sutras, for example:

🌸||ॐ अथातो ब्रह्मजिज्ञासा ॐ||🌸
🌸||ॐ जन्माद्यस्य यतः ॐ||🌸
🌸||ॐ शास्त्रयोनित्वात् ॐ||🌸
🌸||ॐ तत्तु समन्वयात् ॐ||🌸
🌸||ॐ ईक्षत्यशब्दात् ॐ||🌸

These are some of the Sutras in the Brahma Sutras. There are a
total of 564 such Sutras in the Brahma Sutras. It is also known as the Sutras. Since He composed the Brahma Sutras, He is also known as सूत्रकारः or सूत्रकर्तृ. Lord Vedavyasa had a son named Shuka or Shukacharya, who is the incarnation of Lord Shiva Himself. Lord Shiva had the wish to become the son of Bhagavan Vedavyasa, who was the eternal and self-effulgent Narayana Himself. Shukacharya, from the very beginning, was detached from the material world and saw Bhagavan everywhere. Lord Vedavyasa had Sage Vaishampaayana, Sage Paila, Sage Jaimni, etc. as His disciples.

✨ GLORIES OF LORD VEDAVYASA:
Lord Vedavyasa didn’t just compose Sutras. He composed the 18 Mahapuranas and the Upapuranas. Some people do claim that the Puranas are human-written, but they are wrong, because the Puranas were composed by Lord Vedavyasa Himself. He composed the Mahabharata. Lord Vedavyasa first composed the Mahabharata, and after that the actual Mahabharata happened, and wherever the Mahabharata story was about to stop, He would come and continue the story further. He, along with Yadava Krishna, guided and blessed the Pandavas.

The speciality of the Mahabharata composed by Lord Vedavyasa is that each shloka composed by Him has 10 meanings, and in the Vishnu Sahasranama, which comes in the Mahabharata, each name of Bhagavan Vishnu has 100 meanings. The meaning of each name of Bhagavan Vishnu in the Vishnu Sahasranama is the essence of the Bruhati mantras, which are related to the naadis in our body. Therefore, it is said that reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama is good for the body. When the other itihasas and granthas were kept on one side of the weighing scale, and the Mahabharata alone was kept on the other side of the scale, the Mahabharata weighed more than all the granthas combined. That’s the greatness of the Grantha of Lord Vedavyasa.

Lord Vedavyasa even made an insect rule a kingdom by His divine grace, which proves that He can do anything and everything is like a play for Him. Thus, may that great Lord Baadaraayana Krishna Dvaipayana Vedavyasa bless all of us with wisdom and correct knowledge of the scriptures.🙏😊✨
