What is Shivagange Hills?


Shivagange is a mountain peak with a height of 1,368 metres (4,488 ft) and Hindu pilgrimage center And Also historically, it was an Ancient Jain site during the rule of The Hoysala and Ganga Dynasty. located near Dobbaspet, in Bengaluru Rural district, India. It is 25 km (16 mi) from the town of Tumakuru and 54 km (34 mi) from Bangalore.

The sacred mountain is shaped as a shivalinga and a spring flows near locally called "Ganga", thereby giving the place its name. It is also known as Dakshina Kashi (Kashi of the South) and has various temples such as Gangadhareshwara temple, Sri Honnammadevi Temple, Olakal Teertha, Nandi Statue, Patalagang Sharadambe temple and several theerthas such as Agasthya theertha, Kanva theertha, Kapila theertha, Pathala Gange.[

The place is also a popular hill trekking destination near Bangalore. It is sometimes known for some illegal activities often controlled by local police.

There is famous spot in Shivagange called Shanthala Drop where the dancer Shanthala committed suicide over 700 years ago.

The Legend of Shanthala: According to local belief, Queen Shanthala, wife of King Vishnuvardhana, committed suicide by jumping from the peak due to grief over not having a son. It is locally rumored that in the area where her body fell, the vegetation sometimes appears to be blood-red in color, a phenomenon sometimes associated with this tragic tale.

Blood from plucked leaves: This one is a rumour - If we look into the old times where King Vishnuvardhana ruled this place, there was a dancer named "Shanthala". Due to some reasons she committed suicide by jumping from the tip of the hill. The crops which are grown in the spot where her dead body was identified still yields blood red in color.
