It is a word that can be used in both the positive and negative sense. In its positive sense, it conveys a sort of courageous spirit, BOLDLY taking risks in defiance of the obvious, overwhelming odds involved in such risk-taking. In its negative sense, it nevertheless suggests that the same person who is taking a certain risk displays a sort of shocking arrogance, which is visibly seen in doing something that most people instinctly view as unthinkably unconventional, which perhaps borders on being rather unwise. In an earlier age when artificial intelligence was not used in teaching English, the ambivalent usage of this word might baffle certain students.
