Ajay Devgan’s real name is Vishal Devgan. He changed his name during his debut in Phool Aur Kaante in 1991.
This was done to avoid confusion as there were multiple actors named Vishal entering the industry around the time of his debut.
One of them was star-son Vishal Goswami (son of actor-producer-director Manoj Kumar). Vishal was an executive producer of Kalyug Aur Ramayan & Clerk and was to make his debut in Bollywood. However, the project was shelved.
Further, Ajay made an alteration in the spelling of his surname by dropping the letter “A” in 2009. This was done for numerological and family reasons.
After the release of his film, “U Me Aur Hum” in 2008, Ajay suffered a severe back and neck sprain alongside minor injuries and accidents on set. Worried for his health, his mother consulted a numerologist who recommended the change for his better luck, success and well-being.
Ajay was reluctant in doing so but did it for the sake of his mother.
