The biggest USP of Disco Dancer was the electrifying disco music by Bappi Lahiri.
The throbbing, high-energy disco-beats introduced a fresh sound to Indian cinema. The song, “Jimmy Jimmy Aaja” became an instant anthem not only in India but also in Russia.
The album was a high-energy electronic and disco masterpiece.
It even turned Mithun into an overnight household name and cultural icon. His performance of a street performer who transforms into a superstar was liked by the audiences. His energetic, signature dance moves were fresh and modern for Indian audiences.
Also, the universal rags-to-riches story appealed globally. The emotional underdog story of a poor street singer overcoming tragedy and his rivals to claim success resonated deeply with the viewers.
Mithun achieved the poor man’s Amitabh title as he delivered similar high-grossing box-office returns in low budget movies. Amitabh commanded top-tier, high-budget banners while Mithun worked on economical fast-paced action films which turned out to be regional hits.
Middle class audiences shifted to home-VCRs but working class and theatre crowds in smaller towns were packed with Mithun's releases. His high-energy dancing, stunts and emotional drama resonated with Tier-2 & Tier-3 audiences which gave him a fan-following.
Despite lower budget, Mithun pulled in almost similar revenue targets and maintained high occupancy rates which created a parallel commercial stardom and helped him to achieve the above mentioned title.
