Is there any mention of Sri Lanka in the Mahabharata?

Yes, Lanka is mentioned in the Mahabharata. Sage Narada came and told Dharmaraja Yudhishthira to do the Rajasuya Sacrifice because his father, King Pandu, was in the Yamaloka and wanted to go to Svargaloka. Panduraja in his original form was a Marut devata by the name Paraavara Marut. One day he failed to offer his respects to Indra while Indra was coming into the court, and Indra cursed him to be born as a human and never return to his original form and be in the Yamaloka. Paraavara Marut asked for the remedy of the curse, to which Indra said, ‘In future, Yudhishthira will do the Rajasuya Sacrifice, and then you will be freed from the curse and will merge in your original form.’

84) “In his original form, your father was once performing a penance. Indra, the best amongst the Maruts, came near him. Your father, however, did not stand up in respect. Hence he cursed him”.

85) “You shall obtain the birth of a human. After your death, you will return to the Deva loka. However, you will not unite with your original form, and hence Harishchandra will be greater than you then”.

86) “When Paravaha (the original form of Pandu) apologized, Indra told him – ‘If you perform the Rajasuya, you shall attain your original form again and become superior to Harishchandra'”

87) “Therefore O Dharmaraja! You should certainly perform this auspicious task. All of you too shall obtain complete merit as per your own qualifications”.

[Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya, Chapter 21, Pandava Vanapravesha]

And that’s why here Sage Naarada asked Yudhishthira to do the Rajasuya sacrifice. Thus, Yudhishthira sent his brothers for digvijaya. Out of those people, Sahadeva went for the digvijaya in the southern region. Because for the Rajasuya sacrifice, we need to bring taxes from all the kings from all over the world. So, Sahadeva was aiming for Lanka. He remembered Bheemasena’s son Ghatotkacha, who came there immediately and, as per Sahadeva’s instructions, flew to Lanka. There he met Vibheeshana, who was still ruling Lanka. Vibheeshana was extremely pleased by the humility of Ghatotkacha and gave the tax to him for the Rajasuya sacrifice.

213) Sahadeva sent Ghatotkacha, who came there upon mere remembrance, to Vibhishana. He too gave a lot of tax to Sahadeva.

214) Vibhishana remembered all that Sri Rama had told him. He realized that Sri Krishna was Rama Himself. He also observed the strength of Bhima and Arjuna, and that the Pandavas were all Devatas. Hence he gave the tax.

215) The son of Bhima came back to Sahadeva with one mahougha of precious stones. Sahadeva returned to his city. Note: One mahougha is a crore followed by sixty zeroes!

[Mahabharata Tatparya Nirnaya, Chapter 21, Pandava Vanapravesha]

This is as per the Tatparya Nirnaya, which SriMadhvacharya does after reading the Vyasa Mahabharata present all over India, correcting the interpolations (as He Himself mentions in the MBTN ‘Kvachid Granthaaha Prakshipanti') and mentioning the correct Nirnaya for the Mahabharata as per Lord Vedavyasa. Even the Daakshinaatya Paatha of the Mahabharata mentions this.

Actually, after killing Raavana, Ramachandra Himself instructed Vibheeshana that in the future, Yudhishthira will do the Rajasuya sacrifice, and you have to agree to it and give the tax. So yes, Lanka is mentioned in the Mahabharata. But one must note that this Lanka is not the SriLanka which we see now. This SriLanka is the Simhala Dvipa and not the Lanka where Ravana lived, and Vibheeshana is still ruling. It is an island like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and the Maldives. The real Lanka is there, but is invisible to our eyes. That’s why Lanka is an invincible city, where Vibheeshana rules and worships Ramachandra.

Hope this helps!

How did Sri Lanka (Ceylon) become a separate country but not a part of India?

Island kingdoms /countries are very proud of themselves.Though they are not far from mainland they think the borders of their countries are natural and very clear. Japan, England,NZ are some examples.

If unique religion, language and culture added to it then they are permanently a separate country. SL has a combined mythology, history and mutual cooperation with India. But it's Island geography(It has about 20 ancient and modern names including Ceylon,Suvarna dvipa,Sinhala,Ilam), far away from all other nations except India, Sinhalese language, Buddhist religion and culture(Men and women are equal in status from politics to dresses since thousand years!) make it feel and be like a separate country.

And the shrewd British saw it to that SL remain a free country by granting it freedom in 1948 where as India got it in 1947.

You must note that never did once people of SL declare of joining India, though Nehru had thought once.

Still the geographical map of India is not complete without SL and BD. It is because they come in between.

Why didn't India offer Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka to merge with it after independence just like it offered other princely states of India?

Sri Lankan (Ceylon) goverment did see India as a threat and even made 900 000 Indian Tamils stateless in the 1940s.

There exist 3 groups in Sri Lanka which have Tamil as a mother tongue

Eelam Tamils (Sri Lankan Tamils)

Indian Tamils (Brought to the Island by the Dutch and British)

Sri Lankan Muslims (Tamils and Moor)

Sri Lanka have been a place where both Tamils which are Hindus in majorirty and Sinhalese which are Buddhist in majority have had been in various wars for 1000 of years from Sangam times to present.

Tamil Chola Empire

The Sinhalese Buddhist feared India beacuse it was afraid of Hindu Nationalism could make Sri Lanka a part of India, The great amount of Tamils in Tamil Nadu (State in India) could Unite with the Tamil Eelam (North Eastern parts of Sri Lanka).

The Ceylon later the Sri Lankan goverment did also fear the Dravadian Nationalism in India and feared a merger

The Island had always been part of South Indian and local Tamil Kingdoms and Empires like Chola Empire, Pandiya etc and Tamils have always seen Sri Lanka as their own land while Sinhalese as a Aryan Buddhist invaders.

This made Sinhalese to feel insecure which always made them to support all countries which were against India, USA during the cold war, Pakistan during all wars and today China.

Since Sinhalese are orginally from Bengal, Orissa and Gujurat and the great amount of Tamils both in India and Sri Lanka made the Sinhalese be afraid of being annexed to the federal union of India. Sinhalese voiced against when India annexed Goa and Hydrabad and saw IPKF and Indra Gandhi’s as Hindu imperialism which JVP stated in their manifesto. Even today president and Prime Minister Rajapakshe Brothers voiced against India for trying to make Tamil Eelam a seperate state in India or merge it with Tamil Nadu and it wouldnt be long for the Indians to come South.

The unknown war ( Second JVP insurrection) which led to 60 000 Sinhalese dead

It not a shock what all parties have to common is anti India. UNP goverment which was against the Indian intervention and even armed Tamil Millitant groups like LTTE and PLOTE to fight of the Indians. JVP meant UNP didnt have the backbone or the guts to directly fight of the Indians and thats when the second uprising against the goverment began. JVP which was known for internationalism in the beginning transformed as an Anti-tamil organization to get support in the rural areas.

Former President and now Prime Minister and Brother of the current President Rajapakshe which are known for anti West and Anti Indian approch. This was taken during the Tamil Insurgency and Civil War in North East and JVP Insurgency in South.

Ps this is seen from a Sri Lankan Sinhalese view.
