What are the names of some railway stations in India that have been renamed recently? Why were they changed, and what are their new names?

 There are many railway station that have been renamed recently, so i will try to name some of the major Railway station which is trending

1. Chennai Central, latest Name Puratchi Dr. MG Ramachandran Railway station

( in honour of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor M. G. Ramachandran (MGR)

2. Mumbai CST and it's new name Mumbai CSMT

(Mumbai CST was changed to CSMT in June 2017 to add the honorific word "Maharaj" to the name of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji)

3. Bangalore City junction Railway station (Station Code:- SBC) Renamed to KSR Bengaluru Railway Station

Renamed in honour of Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna, a 19th-century freedom fighter from Karnataka, But the station code is older one using permanently.

Other Railway stations in Bengaluru Such as Bengaluru Cantonment, Bengaluru East were changed to Official Local Language rather than Honourable Personality

4. Habibganj Railway Station, Bhopal, Latest name Rani Kamalapati Railway station

It was Renamed after Rani Kamlapati, an 18th-century Gond queen associated with the region.

5. Mughalsarai Junction, in Uttar Pradesh, Renamed to Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction,

(in honour of Deendayal Upadhyaya, a political thinker and leader associated with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.)

6. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Gomoh Junction in Jharkhand (station code: GMO)

It was renamed in 2009 to honor Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who boarded the Kalka Mail here in 1941 for his historic escape from British surveillance (the "Great Escape).

7. Kevadiya railway station in Gujarat, changed to Ekta Nagar railway station.

Kevadia Station name was renamed to honor the Statue of Unity and the theme of national unity associated with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in January 2022. Also to reflect the Ekta Nagar tourism/development area associated particularly with the Statue of Unit

8. Hubballi Railways Station in Karnataka renamed to Siddharoodha Swami Station.

Named after Siddharoodha Swamiji, a prominent spiritual figure associated with Hubballi

9. Itwari Junction in Nagpur, Renamed to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Itwari Railway Station

10. Aurangabad Railway Station in Maharashtra, Renamed to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Railway Station

Renamed after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

11. Jhansi Junction in Uttar Pradesh, renamed to Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station

to honor Rani Lakshmibai, the legendary 19th-century queen of Jhansi and a prominent leader of the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

12. Osmanabad Railway station in Maharashtra, Renamed to Dharashiv

Osmanabad was originally named after a 20th-century ruler of the princely state of Hyderabad (Mir Osman Ali Khan). The renaming policy seeks to replace such names with historically and culturally rooted local titles.

•These are the Some of the railway station name changed due to its Honouring personalities.

1. Allahabad Junction, Uttar Pradesh, Renamed to: Prayagraj Junction,

(The Uttar Pradesh government officially renamed Allahabad to Prayagraj in October 2018 to restore the city's ancient Hindu pilgrimage identity and reverse Mughal-era naming)

2. Manduadih railway station in Uttar Pradesh, renamed to Banaras railway station.

To reflect the widely used historical/cultural name Banaras for the city.

3. Faizabad Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh, renamed to Ayodhya Cantt.

The Uttar Pradesh Government renamed the Faizabad district to Ayodhya in November 2018 to honor Lord Ram and restore the region's ancient Hindu cultural identity.

4. Gurgaon Railway Station, Haryana, Renamed to Gurugram Railway Station,

Gurugan and the surrounding city was changed to restore its ancient mythological and historical connection to Guru Dronacharya from the Mahabharata in 2016 Gurugram.

5. Elphinstone Road Railway Station, Mumbai, Renamed to Prabhadevi Railway Station,

Renamed after the Prabhadevi locality and temple, replacing the colonial-era name Elphinstone Road.

6. Cuddapah Railway station in Andhra Pradesh, Renamed to Kadapa

The name of the city and its railway station was officially changed from Cuddapah to Kadapa on August 19th 2005, by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to match the local Telugu pronunciation. Despite the change, the station code remains HX.

•All these Railway station were named around Colonial Period, Religious and to reflect local name matching

Kochuveli Railway station in Kerala, Now renamed as Thiruvanthapuram North

Nemom as Thiruvanthapuram South

Railway Officials renamed these station names to make it easier for travelers from other states to recognize its location and connection to the main city in effective on October 16th 2024.

•Following the official renaming of a city, some places within it were also changed from their English/British-era names to their official local-language names:

  1. Mysore Junction Railway Station, Renamed to Mysuru Junction Railway Station
  2. Bijapur, renamed to Vijayapura Railway Station
  3. Gulbarga Junction, Renamed to Kalaburgi Junction
  4. Shimoga & Shimoga Railway Station, Renamed to Shivamogga & Shivamogga Town Railway Station
  5. Bellary Junction renamed to Ballari Junction
  6. Hospet Junction as Hosapete Junction Railway Station
  7. Tumkur as Tumakuru Railway Station
  8. Belgaum Railway Station as Belagavi
  9. Mangalore Central & Mangalore Junction, Renamed to Mangaluru Central & Mangaluru Junction
  10. Balasore Railway Station, Renamed to Baleshwar
