SOUNDARYA LAHARI (1–41 verses)

Soundarya lahari is a beautiful poem dedicated to Maa Lalita written by Adi Shankaracharya.

The verses from 1 to 41 are called as Ananda Lahari which literally means “Wave of Bliss” and it is all about greatness of Maa Lalita and Unity between Shiva and Shakti.

The fact is it is written by Adi Shankaracharya and has deep and hidden meanings in it related to tantra and yoga which is hard to understand for normal people without guide, but I will explain direct meaning which is even more beautiful.

And My opinion it is more accurate than purana's because purana's are changed and misunderstood but this poem is not changed and it's very impossible that Shankaracharya misunderstood something.

[ Note :Adi Shankaracharya considers Maa Parvati and Maa Lalita to be the same so yeah don't get confused and he tells about gross, subtle and sublest forms in this verses ( kundalini,kāmakalā and her physical form) ]

Verse 1 :

Meaning : It describes that Prabhu Shiva (Nirguna brahmana) becomes completely inert and can't even vibrate, without Shakti he can't manifest in many forms,it is Prabhu Shiva who takes multiple forms but without Shakti he wouldn't be able to do the creation.

This verse tells the importance of functional nature of Maa adishakti and her importance in creation and unity of Prabhu Shiva and Shakti for creation.

Verse 2,3 and 4 :

Meaning : Bramha creates the world from the dust of Lotus feet of Maa,Vishnu bears(adishesha) and protect the world(Vishnu himself) made by dust of Lotus dust and at the time of dissolution Rudra destroys the world and keeps the ashes of dust on his body.

The Lotus dust act as Island City of sun which dispels darkness of ignorance, the Lotus dust is just like river of nectar which will help dull people to get consciousness, the Lotus dust act as “chintamani”( wish full filling gem) to the poor and it is compared with Prabhu adi varaha swamy who bring back the earth from ocean saying it will help the person who is deeply immersed in the ocean of death and birth cycle.

Everyother gods and goddess gives the boons by hands showing abhaya and varr mudra But her Auspicious Lotus feet are capable of removing fear and granting the boons more than they expected.

This three verses are about importance and greatness of Lotus dust from her feet and Lotus feet of Maa Parvati/Maa Lalita .

Verse 5,6 :

Meaning : It started with praising Mother gives happiness, wealth and prosperity to the people who worships her.

Vishnu was once got a charming female form by praying to Maa that was able to disturb even Prabhu Shiva for a while (sometimes it is believed that mohini is not Vishnu but Maa parvati herself and there is name in Lalita sahasranama too) ,inspite of Kaama’s week tools it is because of worshiping Maa he got beautiful personality and powers which are capable of bringing passion in great sages.

This verse States her power which made Vishnu to look so charming that even Prabhu Shiva was disturbed for a while, because of her kaama deva got the powers and beautiful personality which is capable to create passion in great sages.

Verse 7,8 :

Meaning : Adi Shankaracharya invokes the goddess by saying “ O goddess, the pride of Shiva manifests before us” and mentions her appearance Her slender waist gridled with jingling bells, her waist slightly bent at the waist by weight of breasts, her face blooming like a autumn moon, she appears with four hands holding bow, arrow, noose and goad.

After this they describe MAA’s mystical Adobe Manidweepa and describes her as taking rest on paramashiv( refering sadashiva in bed or kaameshwara/Bhuvaneshwara as couch) who formed couch or bed.

This verses describes the physical appearance of maa with four hands with noose, goad, bow and arrow later describing her eternal adobe manidweepa and she is described resting on Paramashiva( has deep meaning but kind of unity between Shiva and Shakti).

Verse 9 to 11:

Meaning : It describes Maa as the force of Kundalini which resides in Mooladhar chakra and Prabhu Shiva in Sahasrarchakra, basically it describes the force breaks bramha granthi,Vishnu granthi, rudra granthi( there are names in lalita sahasranama) and passes all 6 chakras to reach her husband in sahasrara chakra after reaching a flow of nector comes from there in the body of person who is doing kundalini. Basically stating her as force of Kundalini and ultimate goal is to unite the force with Shiva in 1000 petals flower.

Next verse describes her Sri chakra made by combination of 4 Shiva chakras and 5 Shakti chakras and the bindu in the centre where Shiva and Shakti ( Bhuvaneshwara, Bhuvaneshwari or Kameshwara and Lalita resides )

These verses are about kundalini and yantra beautifully relating it to unity of Shiva and Shakti.

Verse 12 :

Meaning : Even Bramha Deva who always resides Vedas can't explain the beauty of maa parvati and maa saraswati couldn't draw a comparision to maa parvati’s beauty,it is not their fault because no one else in the world is as beautiful as maa parvati who attracted Prabhu Shiva towards her which is very hard even after long tapasya but she become United by doing it.

Here the beauty is not only external but also internal beauty of maa which attracted Prabhu Shiva after long tapasya ( even after tapasya Shiva wouldn't be attract towards anyone but she attracted him after doing tapasya to wake him from samadhi and with her inner beauty, nature tested by Shiva couldnt resist himself from marrying her.)

This verse is about inner beauty of maa that attracted Prabhu Shiva which says how sweet and godd Maa parvati is also unity of Shiva and Shakti.

Verse 13 :

Meaning : By mere look of Maa's side eye an ugly old man would look so charming that 100’s of young women would run for him and fight without realising their waist band has loosen, hair got untied.

This verse Describes Maa’s power of making her devotes attractive by just a side look.

Verse 14 :

Meaning : After reaching to sahasrara chakra at her husband Shiva from the Lotus feet of Maa Fifty four rays of Earth tattva, fifty six rays of water tattva, sixty two rays of fire tattva, fifty four rays of air tattva, seventy rays of akada tattva, sixty four rays of mind tattva, all originates.

This verse is again about power of maa and her importance in kundalini.

Verse 15,16,17 :

Meaning : it is physical appearance of Maa’s other form that she wears moon on her hair like Shiva and given boon and protection by two arms while other two holds crystal bead and a book who blesses sincere devotes to get the flow of words like honey and they become kavindra, when they worship 8 vaag devi’s of Maa ,Saraswati Devi herself come and sits in the mouth of the devote.

8 vaag devi's - Vaśinī(presiding over16 vowels in वर्णमाला i.e sanskrit) ,Kāmeśvarī ( presiding over क वर्ग),Modinī ( presiding over च वर्ग ),Vimalā ( presiding over ट वर्ग),Arunā ( presiding over त वर्ग),Jayinī ( presiding over प वर्ग),Sarveśvarī (presiding over य,र,ल,व) and Kaulinī ( presiding over श, ष, स, ह, ळ,क्ष).

[ In 4th verse it was mentioned she doesn't need to bless with arms her Lotus feet are enough and yes that is true her Lotus feet is very auspicious at the same time she gives blessings by arms too ]

Verse 18 :

Meaning : It describes the beauty of urvashi ( an apsara ) who also gets attracted by the devote of Maa who meditates on red radiant lustrous form, even though attracted those apsara would be doubtful to go near him/ disturb him which is compared with fearful eyes of deer.

This verse Associate Maa with Red colour and even in many tantras and kāmakalā maa is associated with red colour and Prabhu is with white colour.

Verse 19,20,21 :

Meaning : The one who meditates on your kāmakalā form your face as Bindu, lower two dots as breasts and the inverted triangle below those as source of creation ( probably yoni) called as harardha ( half of hara) representing creation is not seperate from Shiva. (Subtler form)

The one who meditates on the form as sculptured in moon stone, will visualise the flow of nectar in the body due to moon rays coming from the mother's body is like Garuda who removes the fear of snakes just like that those rays removes all kind of diseases and fear of happening diseases.(Gross form)

The great Yogis will experience of great and powerful Bliss of your presence in sahasrar chakra along with Prabhu Shiva, comparing Maa in sahasrar chakra with streaks of lightnings, sun, moon and fire.(Kundalini awakening - subtle form)

[The Kāmakalā is her subtler form which is only known to her spouse Siva,Kundalini is her subtlest form and in her gross forms she appears in many ways which we can pray.

So who feels uncomfortable with tantric traditions like kāmakalā( union of Shiva and Shakti ) and can't meditate on that( union of feminine and masculine energy in yoni) or feels that as bad, they can pray by awakening kundalini but it's not every one's cup of tea as it's hardest among all,so she also appears in gross forms which you can pray 🙏🏻.]

Verse 22 :

Meaning : who ever worships her with sincerity, devotion and calls her ‘O bhavani’ they will get the sāyujya moksha (Absorption into divine God in this case maa parvati),it is so fast that devote wouldn't even complete the total name and he would get the moksha which tells how much Maa loves the name “Bhavani” (which means consort of Bhava) which can symbolise how much mother loves Prabhu Shiva, later tells when devote is about to call maa as bhavani she hurridly start going from the throne and other goddess warns her to be careful and not hit by the crowns of “Vishnu,Bramha and other gods” which are at the feet of Maa at that time symbolising her highest priority is her devotes who call her “ bhavani”.

[Why not shankari, rudrani why only Bhavani to understand the name of Bhavani,we need to understand ‘Bhava’ which means the one who exists all the time and cause of creation ( Kriṣṇa Yajurveda Taittirīta Samhtā (IV.v.5.1) also has hymn “ om namo bhavāya cha namo rudraya” and also part of Sri Rudram you can check),so bhavani means the Shakti/ consort who exists all the time with bhava and whose power is the reason for cause of creation through bhava, and Adi Shankaracharya written Bhavani bhujangam representing the importance of bhavani .]

sāyujya moksha is highest moksha by individual gods but kaivalya moksha is considered highest as it represents Nirguna Brahmana,I heard who leaves body in kaashi gets it by blessing of Prabhu Vishweshwara and Maa vishalakshi, there can be other ways also but this is easiest way.]

Verse 23 :

Meaning : Adi Shankaracharya doubts that Maa unsatisfied by just having left half of Shiva she took away right half too because when he meditated on Siva he saw Maa but later realising that she is with Prabhu Shiva normally Maa wears full fledged crown but in the form he saw she is represented with partial form with a moon on head, normally Maa doesn't have third eye but this form she had third eye which made Shankaracharya realise it is Prabhu Shiva along with maa.

This verse has many meanings can be interpreted in many ways like Maa doesn't want any one to see Prabhu Shiva without she checking the devote worthful or not that is why she prevaded entire form, this can also be symbolic representation of kāmakalā,in other sense Maya covering Brahmana( but Maa is much more than Maya but it can be possible meaning),And it can also represent inseperablity of Shiv and Shakti, without the will of Shakti you can't reach Shiva, can also refer the name 999 in Lalitasahasranama.(Only Adi Shankaracharya can keep many hidden meanings).

Verse 24 :

Meaning : This single verse tells that Bramha creates universe,Vishnu preserves it ,Rudra destroys it and Maheshwara merges everything into him which all is controlled by sadashiva and he gives moksha also due to raise in her eyebrow.

This verse symbolises 5 acts of Brahmana are controlled by her - creation, sustanence, destruction, concealing and salvation.

The cycle of universe and the way to get out of it everything is under Maa’s control.

Verse 25 :

Meaning : O auspicious parashakti worshiping your Lotus feet is equivalent to worshipping trideva's coming from your triguna’s.

This verse boldly state worshipping the Lotus feet of Maa is equal to worshiping all trideva's.

Verse 26 :

Meaning : Bramha,Vishnu,Kubera, all other gods and even Yama meets his death at the time of great dissolution done by mahakaal but she alone stays alive at that time and witness the terrible act of her husband.

This verse describes the power of Maa that she is the only one who is uneffected by great dissolution.

Verse 27 :

Meaning : Shankaracharya charya wants to pray to maa all the time but it is kind of not possible that is why he asks Maa that “ let my speech (what ever he talks) be considered as her mantras, let the movements of my(adi Shankaracharya )hands be considered as mudras, let my walking be her circumambulation, let my eating be fire offerings to you,let my all actions be form of your worshipings.

This verse says Shankaracharya all the want to worship divine mother which is physically not possible that is why he prays maa to consider all his actions as form of worshipping her.

Verse 28 :

Meaning : All gods( bramha,Indra and other gods) who even after drinking the nector which removes old age, diseases and make you immortal still meet their end at the time of dissolution, but it is by the power of your ear ring( may be this can refer pativrat dharma of maa as a married women) that Shiva who drank poision stopped it in the throat.

This verse tells that maa has stopped the poision in shiva’s throat such that lokas inside him don't get destroy and it is by the power of maa( here mentioned as ear ring) that Shiva doesn't feel immense pain even after holding halahal in the throat.

Verse 29 :

Meaning : As soon as Maa came to know that bhava (Shiva) has arrived at her Adobe she hurridly start going to welcome him and other goddess warns her to not get hurted by the crowns of bramha,Vishnu,Indra and all other at her feet at that time.

This verse tells her priority and love towards bhava is way greater than everyone.

[Note : in 22nd verse Shankaracharya told that she hurridly goes for bhakta and in this verse telling she hurridly goes for Shiva,in first case it shows she likes the name Bhavani that is why she goes Bhavani means consort of Bhava; in this verse Shiva is referred as Bhava so it's common sense when she go hurridly for bhakta when he/she calls her consort of Bhava then why can't she go hurridly to welcome Bhava.

You may get doubt in both the times the crowns of Bramha, vishnu and other gods are at her feet ? May be all the times they stay at the feet because maa’s Lotus feet is very auspicious as already discussed.]

Verse 30 :

Meaning : The devote who gives aarti to you not see you as goddess surrounded by 8 siddhi goddess but see you as the eternal, supreme reality and supreme soul and they doesn't even want to attain the state of Shiva ( probably Nirguna Brahmana Kaivalya moksha) as they choose her over even Brahmana ( they consider sāyujya moksha same as kaivalya or even better)

[ Note : Shiva and Shakti are not different and those who prays Shakti maa also get kaivalya but they need to see every God as divine as they see Maa and have to see every person as Maa only( which is hard so they get sāyujya )or just die in kaashi their even paapi will get kaivalya by blessings of maa vishalakshi].

Verse 31,32,33 :

Meaning : On the request of Mother Prabhu Shiva who revealed 64 tantras (which are capable of giving 3 purusharthas and siddhis )has made a tantra related to Maa which is capable of giving 4 purusharthas ( this can be related to Mahānirvāṇa Tantra (IV.45) where maa parvati asked a tantra to Shiva for her devotes to reach him.)

As maa parvati request Prabhu Shiva reveals tantra but Shankaracharya in 32nd verse secretly tells the Pañcadasākṣarī mantra which is revealed by Shiva “ka-e-ī-la-hrīṁ, ha-sa-ka-ha-la-hrīṁ, and sa-ka-la-hrīṁ”.

Those who want endless material pleasures have to place kāma bīja klīṁ क्लींBhuvaneśvarī bīja hrīṁ ह्रीं; and Lakṣmī bīja śrīṁ श्रीं before Your mantra and worship You with rosary having the equal qualities of cintāmaṇi and by offering countless oblations with ghee made from cow’s milk into the fire of shiva.

[ Those who want salvation should use Saubhāgya Pañcadasākṣarī mantra (aiṁ, klīṁ, sauḥ)

Note : Sri Vidya is much more then these 3 verses,if you want to know more about it consult a guru as no books,no videos and no sources can fully explain it.]

These verses tells the importance of Sri Vidya tantra which is created by Shiva on request of Maa such that her devotes can also achieve Shiva(param bramha) by worshiping her(Maa Lalita)(atleast these shlokas says this).

Verse 34 :

Meaning : you appear as a body of Shiva with two breasts like sun and moon,so therefore Shankaracharya considers her sinless /pure just like Shiva,Basically 9 primary and secondary qualities are same in Maa Shakti and Prabhu Shiva in physical form just the difference is one being masculine and other feminine that too divided for creation of universe otherwise they are only one entity Shiva is shakti and Shakti is Shiva they are inseperable from each other the one who worships Shakti means he is worshiping Shiva and their both blessings are required to recieve blissful state in all subtle, gross and subtler forms.

Verse 35 :

Meaning : The divine mother is mind, space, air, fire, water and earth there is nothing beyond these, as You have manifested in the form of the universe. You have assumed the role of Śiva’s Consort and manifest as Consciousness and Bliss.

This verse States the mother as Ultimate reality / parambramha not seperate from Shiva at all but as for manifesting in the universe she assumed the role of Shiva's consort that to because they can't stay without each other or other wise they are inseperable from each other in parambramha position(they don't even like two bodies but manifesting in universe she become consort of shiva such that she becomes close to Shiva and take Ardhnareshwara form in universe because they couldn't even stay seperated at all )

Basically it's stating maa Shakti as parambramha not seperate from Shiva and as parambramha she does creation, preservation, destruction, dissolution...

[Not in verse but It is similar to Taittirīya Upaniṣad (II.1)Taittirīya Upaniṣad (II.1)

that from Brahmana emerged space, from space air, from air fire and so on but Shankaracharya added mind also in it like Brahmana( Maa shakti and Shiva both don't confuse by considering only Shiva ) take form of ardhanareshwara ( mind) and from that saguna form emerged space and so on .]

[ Note : if I say Shiva or shakti it's both if I say Shiva is parambramha you need to think Shiva and Shakti is parambramha I am saying this now because next verses are expansion of 35th verses and that is why Shankaracharya told in 35th verse- explaining (mind, space, air, fire, water and earth )that everything is Maa so that we won't get confused and word wise meaning will have Shiva most of the times]

Verse 36 to 41:

These are my favourite verses in soundarya Lahari and I recommend you guys to read it by yourself you can check in “manblunder “ website he explained them very well because in these last 6 verses you need to understand deep and hidden meanings too.

Shankaracharya beautifully related creation of universe to 6 chakras in sequence and the way by which Shiva and Shakti are united at every stage of creation which are associated with chakras in sequence of hierarchy with beautiful comparisions and examples which are based on many Upanishads one of them being Taittirīya Upaniṣad (II.1).

So please don't miss these verses and read and Shankaracharya arranged these 6 verses in sequence.

Please don't miss these verses.

Actually I wanted to explain it by adding verse but quora didn't let me 🥲 I wrote till 36th after that it showed something went wrong then again I reshuffled the entire verses from starting into groups of 2,3 and removed some deep meanings, even after that it doesn't let me finish so I thought of not writting it here just telling to read them by yourself.

Btw I am sorry if I had written Any wrong information because I write this by taking 8 hours like 1 hrone day,4 hrs on Sunday like this so possibility of mistakes are there.

Please comment your opinion
