Between the theory of geocentric and heliocentric, which theory is true?

 The heliocentric model is the true description of our solar system. But if you ask a modern astrophysicist, both ancient theories share one massive, universe-sized flaw.

For nearly 1,500 years, the world accepted the geocentric model, formalized by Claudius Ptolemy in the second century. It placed a stationary Earth at the center of the universe, with the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets revolving around it. Geocentrism dominated because it aligned with basic human intuition: the ground feels entirely still beneath our feet, and the Sun appears to sweep across the sky each day. However, to account for the strange, backward "retrograde" motion of planets like Mars, geocentrism required convoluted mathematical workarounds called epicycles—circles within circles—to make the planetary paths fit the Earth-centered assumption.

The heliocentric theory, famously published by Nicolaus Copernicus in 1543, placed the Sun at the center. By simply swapping the Earth for the Sun, the bizarre looping orbits of the planets instantly smoothed out into logical paths. Earth was demoted to just another planet orbiting the Sun.

The debate was ultimately settled by observation. When Galileo Galilei pointed his newly improved telescope at Venus in 1610, he saw that the planet went through a full set of phases, much like the Moon. If Venus orbited the Earth, it would only ever appear as a crescent in the sky. The full phases proved Venus was orbiting the Sun. Johannes Kepler later refined the model by proving the orbits were elliptical rather than perfectly circular, cementing heliocentrism as the factual basis for orbital mechanics.

There is a slight catch to the heliocentric theory as originally proposed. Early astronomers like Copernicus believed the Sun was the center of the entire universe. Today, astrophysics confirms that while the heliocentric model perfectly describes the local mechanics of our solar system, the Sun is just one of billions of stars orbiting the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy, which itself is moving through an expanding universe that has no true center at all.
