What if we could time travel, and what consequences might it have?

If we could actually pull off time travel, it would be an absolute trip. You are talking about something mind-blowing and jammed full of raw potential, but it would also be completely terrifying and straight-up soul crushing.

Honestly, the whole thing comes down to what we end up figuring out about how time actually works. And that connects right away to the consequences. Depending on the rules, the consequences for you personally could either be absolute total oblivion or literally nothing at all. Did I lose you already? Let me break it down simple. It all depends on whether temporal mechanics operate like Back to the Future or Avengers Endgame. Did that lightbulb go off? Good. Because that makes everything coming next way easier to chew on.

So let us kick off with the Back to the Future rules of temporal mechanics. If time works like Doc Brown says it does, any major tweak you make to the past can completely rewrite your current life or erase you off the map entirely. Right out of the gate you hit the first giant atomic bomb waiting to blow up right in your face. It brings us straight to the famous Grandfather Paradox.

Why is it a paradox? Try to keep up with me here. You hop in the machine and go back in time → You stop your grandfather from ever meeting your grandmother → Because they never met, they never had your dad or your mom → Because your parents were never born, you were never born either → But if you were never born in the first place, how in the hell did you go back and stop your grandparents from meeting?

Mind-blowing, right? No kidding. Theoretical physicists have been losing their minds over this for decades. Really, it's because if you go and pull a stupid move like that, what actually happens? Does time itself have built-in immune defenses that just erase you personally from existence? Or does the universe go full scorched earth and obliterate the whole planet just to make sure the math checks out? We have no way of knowing, but it leaves a cold, nasty feeling right down your spine.

Now imagine you mess up the math on your temporal coordinates. You miss your target and land dead in the middle of Nazi Germany. You do not just hand over your shiny future tech, you hand over yourself. And trust me, those bastards start working on you immediately. I will skip the bloody details so I do not traumatize the sensitive folks reading this, but they are going to make you spill every single bean.

The Manhattan Project. Little Boy and Fat Man. Depending on how much smart stuff you actually carry in your head, you just handed some of the worst monsters in history the keys to the future. How nuclear fission works. Microprocessors. Artificial intelligence. Modern vaccines. Weaponized viruses. Dirt on future world leaders. Your knowledge becomes their ultimate weapon. And if you were the genius who built the time machine in your garage, congrats, you just handed them a temporal superweapon with zero defense against it.

Now, you might sit back and say, "Well, I altered history, so I will just stop existing and vanish into thin air." Sure, buddy. But depending on the exact second you pop out of existence, you might have already handed them more than enough blueprint data to ruin humanity forever.

Granted, there are some pretty wild scenarios you could explore. You could cruise back in time and figure out how old the Great Pyramids actually are, plus see how they were really built. You could even shoot high-res video of the construction so all the know it alls back home can see it with their own eyes.

Same deal if you want to verify or wreck religious history like the Bible. Take the Crucifixion, for instance. Did Jesus actually rise from the dead? Or was the whole gig just a masterclass in human trickery where someone drugged the Roman guards, moved the body, and sold the story of a miraculous resurrection? If you bring back hard video evidence, you could either validate billions of believers or completely tear down a single religion in an afternoon.

That is just one side of the coin, though.

You could just as easily punch it into the future to see what is coming down the pipe. You grab enough future intel, head back home, and you either patent crazy inventions to get filthy rich beyond your wildest dreams, or you dump the raw data onto major university networks so everyone shares it. Think instant cures, modern vaccines, and radical medical treatments delivered overnight.

Yeah, okay, you might also pop out right in the middle of World War III, or find yourself standing in a wasteland after the dust settles. But even if you land in a nuclear dump, you just take quick little jumps back. Not to your original present, but a few years before the war started, just to sniff around and see who pulled the trigger first.

When you break it down, Back to the Future mechanics carry one main fatal threat. You can mess up history so badly that you erase yourself from existence, and maybe drag the whole damn planet down with you.

Now, that entire nightmare is not a problem under Avengers Endgame temporal mechanics. In that setup, you can never actually change your own past. You are just jumping sideways into totally different timelines. Did I lose you again? Here is a lifeline. For a long time, theoretical physicists trying to solve temporal paradoxes came up with a real clean, elegant idea that might just be what the universe actually uses. The second you change anything in the past, the timeline splits off into a fresh branch. Whatever crazy stunt you pull in that past never touches the present of your original timeline.

That concept however got a serious upgrade. The big idea today is not that you create new timelines on the fly, but rather that every timeline already exists, and your trip simply places you into one.

It is pretty easy to wrap your head around if you stop overthinking it. Back at the Big Bang, time exploded into every single conceivable direction and outcome. Every possible reality happened instantly. So whenever some guy on the street sighs and says, "Damn it, I wish I had done things differently," well, guess what? He did. For every single choice or outcome, there is a timeline attached to it.

Now, there cannot be literally infinite timelines, because in some of them the universe probably choked and collapsed back into a small sphere or whatever, but even if there are only 10 to the 963rd timelines, that number is so insanely massive your brain cannot even process it.

A discovery like that comes with monstrous consequences. First off, any cozy idea you had about free will goes straight out the window. You traveling through time was never your grand personal choice. It was just one pre-written scenario playing itself out on schedule. You never had a choice, because it was always locked in to happen. And while you are jumping through time, other versions of you from other timelines are doing the exact same thing, along with plenty of people who are not you at all.

Yeah, nobody can actually ruin each other's historical past, but you can affect the present while simultaneously not affecting it at all. Why? Because the event of someone jumping in to alter your present was just one pre-baked scenario in an already set outcome, while another timeline exists where that visitor never showed up.

So you cannot really alter the past, the present, or the future. Every single outcome has already happened, is happening right now, and will happen again. You are not changing jack shit. You are just hopping between tracks and looking at different showpieces.

Welcome to the level 3 multiverse. It is one of those high-level multiverse theories that exists purely on blackboards for now, better known as the Many-Worlds Interpretation. Everything is already written out and fully explored. There is no real choice, no random chance, and no cosmic surprises.

Of course, you can just shove that depressing thought deep down and keep living your life like normal. You can pretend you are out here making real choices, even though in the back of your mind you know it is all nonsense. You are basically trapped inside a temporal library of infinite size, with zero exit doors. Unless, of course, whoever built the library left a secret trapdoor somewhere.

I suppose there is a silver lining to knowing nothing you do actually changes anything, since you are just sliding into alternate timelines that were already sitting there waiting for you. It gives you a great excuse for whatever terrible decisions you make. If it was not a valid potential outcome, you would not have been able to pull it off anyway. So go ahead and blame the universe.

So that is the layout. Back to the Future mechanics versus Avengers Endgame mechanics. Sure, there are other theoretical frameworks, but these are the two big ones people lose sleep over.

The real kick in the teeth is that until you actually build the machine and alter something, you cannot know which reality you live in. But the second you find out, everything you thought you knew gets shattered into pieces. The door unlocks, and the illusion dies. Honestly, the only real shocker left would be if some Morpheus looking guy was waiting for you on the other side to say, "Welcome to the real world."

Only, would that actually be the real world, or just another layer in the cosmic onion? Welcome to the Matryoshka dilemma.
