His role of an outlaw hero, Birju is considered to be one of Bollywood's most memorable performances of all times. His character Birju becomes a rebellious son who is killed by his mother as he becomes a dacoit and is on the wrong side of the law.
Sunil Dutt has brilliantly brought out the tension between his love for mother (Radha - Nargis) and his resentment against his circumstances.
On the other hand he contrasted perfectly with the calm, dutiful role of his brother played by Rajendra Kumar. A high energy volatile performance that was rogue as well as emotionally vulnerable.
The climax of the film is the crux and the most unexpected part of the film.
