What is Brinicle?

The Brinicle is a spectacular and terrifying phenomenon that occurs in the deep sea of the Antarctic oceans.

It is a frozen death ray formed by a mass of very cold salt water that, when it comes into contact with the warmer water beneath the ice surface, rapidly lowers its temperature.

As soon as the Brinicle hits the ocean floor, the ice spreads, instantly killing all life on it , such as sea urchins, starfish colonies, and any slower-moving creatures.

The existence of the Brinicle was discovered in 1960, however, it was only in 2011 that BBC operators in Antarctica were the first to film the extraordinary phenomenon during its formation .
