Who is the husband of maa Ganga? Is it Shiva or Shantanu?

Shantanu is husband of Mata Ganga in Mahabharata. They had sons whom she drowned in the water due to a curse on them but their last son Devvrata was saved by his father Shantanu and Ganga left him as he broke his promise of never questioning her.

Lord Shiva is not considered as husband of Mata Ganga except in few regional folklores. In Valmiki Ramayana, his seed was transferred in Ganga’s womb by Agni and she delivered it on her banks and then Kritikas cared for the child. So, Ganga is like surrogate mother of Skanda (Kartikeya) and Kritikas is his foster mothers while Parvati being his true mother.

So, Lord Shiva might be her husband in regional folklores but traditional Puranas don't mention any such thing. He's simple bearer of Ganga not husband of Ganga.

Who is Goddess Ganga in Hindu mythology?

 In Hindu mythology,Goddess Ganga is the personification of the Ganges River,one of the holiest rivers in India.She is considered a divine being with the power to cleanse and forgive sins. According to mythological stories,goddess Ganga descended to earth to purify the souls of the dead and bring salvation.She is often depicted as a beautiful woman riding a crocodile(makara) and holding a water pot (kamandalu) and a lotus.

Goddess Ganga is worshipped not only as a river but also as a goddess who embodies purity,forgiveness and spiritual purification.Her descent to earth is closely linked to the efforts of King Bhagiratha,who performed deep penance to bring her down from heaven and purify her with the ashes of his ancestors.

ದೇವ ಪ್ರಯಾಗ : ಆದರೆ, ಅಲಕನಂದಾ ಉತ್ತರಾಖಂಡದ ದೇವ ಪ್ರಯಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಧಾರೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ .

ಭಾಗ್ರೀರಥಿ: ಇದರ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಹಿನಿಯು ಹಿಮಾಲಯದ ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಗೋಮುಖದಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ನಿವಾಸ: ಗಾದೆಯಂತೆ, ಅವಳು ಶಿವನ ಕೂದಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುತ್ತಾಳೆ .

ಮೊದಲ ಜನನ: ಸರಿ, ಅವಳನ್ನು ಹಿಮಾಲಯದ ಮೊದಲ ಜನನ ಮಗಳು ಎಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ .

ಹಿರಿಯಳು: ಅವಳನ್ನು ಮಾತಾ ಉಮಾ (ಪಾರ್ವತಿ) ಅವರ ಅಕ್ಕ ಎಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ತಾಯಿ: ಅವರು ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಪಿತಾಮಹರ ತಾಯಿ - ಸತ್ಯದ ಸಾರಾಂಶ.

ಹಬ್ಬ: ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷ; ಗಂಗಾ ಭೂಮಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ನೆನಪಿಗಾಗಿ ಹಿಂದೂಗಳು ಗಂಗಾ ದಸರಾವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಪವಿತ್ರ: ಇದು ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪವಿತ್ರ ನದಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಅನೇಕ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಇದರ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿವೆ.
