I work in a 5-star hotel in India. Here are the kinds of things no one will ever tell you:
- It's easy to get a 10-15% discount on your room by calling the hotel directly. All online booking sites like Expedia and Booking add their markup to the prices they offer. It's profitable for hotels to book directly with these sites because they'll be paid more and will offer you additional perks.
- Never book a room at the cheapest possible rate, as most are non-refundable. Even the advance booking price only covers the room itself and offers no guarantee.
- Mention any health issues or special requirements. If you are travelling with someone with a physical or mental disability, the room will be adapted to their needs.
- If you are staying in a hotel chain for more than 5 days, join the hotel's loyalty program. You will receive many benefits.
- If you want to enjoy the ambiance of a five-star hotel in your city, try booking a room during the weekends as hotels are less busy during this period and offer reduced rates.
- Most rooms are never cleaned properly. Only light vacuuming and dusting are done, and only in visible areas. Bathrooms are rarely cleaned well.
- Never drink from the glasses provided in your room. These glasses are not properly cleaned. If the glasses smell of lemon and lime and are extremely shiny, it's a bad idea.
- Keep your hands and belongings away from the sinks, as the bathroom is very dirty.
- If you are traveling with children, ask the staff to move the minibar out of your room. Any drinks or snacks that are opened will be charged. Many parents are shocked when they discover we've charged them over €130 because their children opened the wine bottles.
- If you misbehave regularly towards hotel staff or an employee, you could be banned from the hotel chain. We are able to file a complaint against you.
- Never ask for food if you arrive early in the morning ( before breakfast time ). Most of these foods are prepared during the day and are stale.
- Never ask for the daily special. This special menu is usually prepared using the staleest ingredients.
- We have your entire order history within the hotel chain for marketing purposes.
- You can tell who's booking a hotel to cheat on their wife/husband
- Sometimes we deal with divorce problems.
- People also die in hotels.
- You are sleeping on a bed in which many people have had sexual pleasure regardless of their orientation.
- We see a lot of actors, super rich people. Generally, we act as if they're not there.
- The most disliked guests in hotels are flight attendants. They are the noisiest and are grouped together in rooms next to each other.
- Managing VIP travel and bookings is one of the most stressful tasks in my job. I remember one time when one of the most famous politicians visited the hotel. Everyone was worried and tired because of the security detail accompanying him.
One of the best lessons I've learned in this job is that clothes don't make the man. I've seen the most poorly dressed billionaire and people far less wealthy who were much more stylish. So I treat everyone the same.
