What is the krill paradox?

The krill paradox stems from a recent discovery, made by researchers at Stanford University in 2012.

The whale feeds on this marine creature, and as we well know, the number of cetaceans has decreased dramatically over the course of these decades: but since the whales have decreased, krill has also decreased.

How is this possible? Under normal circumstances, when a predator disappears, its prey increases in number.

This is where the paradox arises : whale feces accumulate phytoplankton , which trap large quantities given their size.

Krill, which feed on phytoplankton, have had considerable difficulty finding food since their predator has diminished, so it can be deduced that whales and krill keep each other alive.
