According to all online dictionaries, by “ outlandish “ is meant something that is bizarre, strange, unusual or unreasonable in terms of conventional standards of behaviour.
Now here is my own take of the structure, or architectonics, of this word, which is “out +landish”—how could that word-structure composition be used to describe something that is highly unusual ?
Do note that this is strictly my own interpretation of the meaning of this word : Centuries ago, when this particular word was first used, the absence of reliable technology rendered both the sea, the river and anywhere in the wild potentially hazardous. Only the solid ground one stood on was deemed “safe”, and anybody trying to do something “off land”or “out-land” was considered “unusual”, or even “strange” to no end, as follows…
Jumping off land—solid ground— INTO a cliff just to take this stunningly impressive selfie is no doubt being “outlandish”…
