What should you not do when visiting China?

 Here are some things you should NOT do in China. I'll add a quick summary.

Shadeed Abdulmateen, an American citizen, was sentenced to death in China (for killing his girlfriend when she tried to break up with him).

Drug offenses are a big NO! Don't mess with drugs. China does not tolerate the threat of drugs. The penalties are severe, and there is simply no way around it.

There are many recent examples where expatriates have been receiving the death penalty.

Don't cause trouble with the locals. Don't attack women. The security system is very comprehensive. CCTV cameras are installed in all shops, restaurants, bars, pubs... troublemakers will be caught.

Harbin in winter.

Don't get involved in politics. For example, Taiwan is a sensitive issue. You can't just say whatever you want. If you're an American expat, you might be asked directly for your opinion on Taiwan.

Locals, especially in Shanghai, prefer to talk about business rather than politics.

The Chinese are patriotic. You are expected to show respect for the local culture.

Do not attempt to enter China illegally. First, it is not easy to enter illegally, and even if you manage to do so, you will be caught. Furthermore, do not overstay your visa. Penalties include a fine of 500 Chinese yuan per day, with a possible ban on re-entering China in the near future.

Don't expect to find spoons and forks in restaurants. You have to get used to using chopsticks. It's so important...

Stop comparing China to this country and that one. China has its own unique charm. The more time you spend exploring China, the more you'll discover.

What are the hardest adjustments to make when visiting Mongolia?

 First thing you notice when you arrive in Mongolia is dryness. Your throat dries up instantly. Keep water nearby, especially when sleeping

Altitude- though not as high as Tibet, Ulaanbaatar city is 1300 meter above sea level. Some people suffer light forms of altitude sickness.

If you are a city person, you will find that darkness in Mongolia is really dark. Its so dark you will not see your hands 1 mm away from your face. Also, its super quiet. Some would say its deafening quiet. So combination of super dark and super quiet. Some people find it difficult the first 1–2 days.

This by far is the most difficult thing to adjust. Toilets are rare and far in between. So you would be happy to see even these ones. Don’t look down. Its not for the faint hearted….

ಜೋಗ ಜಲಪಾತಕ್ಕೆ ವರ್ಷಪೂರ್ತಿ ಭೇಟಿ ಕೊಡಬಹುದು. ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಅನ್ನುವುದನ್ನ ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಬೇರೇನನ್ನೂ ನೋಡಲಾಗದು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಜಲಪಾತದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ನೋಡಬಹುದಾದ ಬೇರೆ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳೂ ಇವೆ . ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋದರೆ ಅವನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ನೋಡಲಾಗದು.

• ಜೂನ್, ಜುಲೈ, ಅಗಸ್ಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಜಲಪಾತದ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ಸವಿಯಬಹುದು. ಒಮ್ಮೊಮ್ಮೆ ಜಲಾಶಯದಿಂದ ನೀರನ್ನು ಹೊರಬಿಡದಿದ್ದರೆ ಮಳೆಗಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡಾ ಜಲಪಾತದ ರಮಣೀಯ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ಸವಿಯಲಾಗದು.
• ಭೋರ್ಗರೆಯುವ ನೀರಿನ ಸಪ್ಪಳವು ಕಿಲೊಮೀಟರ್‌ಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ದೂರದವರೆಗೂ ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
• ತಮಾಷೆಯಂದರೆ, ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ಸಾಗರ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಜೋಗದಿಂದ ನಾವು ನೋಡುವ ಜಲಪಾತ ಇರುವುದು ಉತ್ತರಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಸಿದ್ದಾಪುರ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ!! ಅದರ ನಿಜವಾದ ಹೆಸರು ಗೇರುಸೊಪ್ಪ ಜಲಪಾತ.
• ಸುಮಾರು ಕಾಲು ಕಿಲೋ ಮೀಟರ್ ಎತ್ತರದ ಬೆಟ್ಟದಿಂದ ಧುಮುಕುವ ಜಲಪಾತದ ಬುಡಕ್ಕೆ ತಲುಪಲು ಜೋಗದಿಂದ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳು ಇವೆ. ಮಳೆಗಾಲದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಇಳಿದು ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಬುಡ ತಲುಪಲು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಅನುಮತಿ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
• ಜಲಪಾತದ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯವು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಬಂಗಲೆ ಕಡೆಯಿಂದ ಇನ್ನೂ ರೋಮಾಂಚಕವಾಗಿ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಜೋರು ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮಗೆ ಆ ಅವಕಾಶ ಕೂಡಾ ಲಭಿಸದೆ ಇರಬಹುದು.

• ಜೋಗದಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ಕಿ.ಮಿ. ದೂರದ ಕಾರ್ಗಲ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಶರಾವತಿ ನದಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿದ ಆಣೆಕಟ್ಟು ಇದೆ. 193 ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದ ಆಣೆಕಟ್ಟಿನ ಉದ್ದ 2.74 ಕಿ.ಮಿ. ಅದೇ ಲಿಂಗನಮಕ್ಕಿ ಡ್ಯಾಮ್.

• ಪವರ್ ಜನರೇಟಗ್ ಸ್ಟೇಷನ್ ಕೂಡಾ ನೋಡಬಹುದಾದ ಸ್ಥಳ. ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಇದೆಯೋ ಇಲ್ಲವೊ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.

• ಜೋಗ ಜಲಪಾತದ ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ವಾಟರ್ ಸ್ಪೋರ್ಟ್ಸ್ ಕೂಡಾ ಇದೆ. ಮಳೆಯ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವು ಇರದೇ ಇರಬಹುದು.

ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ನಿಜ. ಆದರೆ ಜೋಗವು ಹೇಗಿದೆ?

ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ಸವಿಯಲು ನಿರ್ವಿವಾದವಾಗಿ ನಾವಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಲೇಬೇಕು. ಲಕ್ಷಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರು ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕಣ್ತುಂಬಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ‌ ,‌ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರ ಅನುಕೂಲಕ್ಕಾಗಿ‌ ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಅಥವಾ ಸರಕಾರ ಏನು ಮಾಡಿದೆ?

• ಕಿತ್ತುಹೋದ ನೆಲ ಹಾಸುಗಳು, ಮುರಿದು ನೇತಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ರೇಲಿಂಗುಗಳು, ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟವಿಲ್ಲದ ರೆಸ್ಟೋರೆಂಟ್ ‌ಗಳು, ತುಕ್ಕು ಹಿಡಿದಿರುವ ಕಬ್ಬಿಣದ ಸೇತುವೆ, ಎಲ್ಲೆಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ರಾಚುವ ಕಸದ ರಾಶಿ. ಕಿತ್ತು ಹೋಗಿರುವ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳು.
• ಇವು ನಾವೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಸೇರಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸುಂದರ ಜೋಗ. ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಬಾರಿ ನಾವು ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ದೂಷಿಸುವ ಮೊದಲು, "ಇಂತಹ ಸುಂದರ ತಾಣವನ್ನು ಹಾಳು ಮಾಡಲು ನಾವೆಷ್ಟು ಕಾಣಿಕೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ" ಎಂದು ನಮಗೆ ನಾವೇ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು.
• ಇನ್ನು , ಬ್ರಟಿಷ್ ಬಂಗಲೆ ಕಡೆ ಹೋದರೆ ಸುರಕ್ಷತೆ ಅನ್ನುವ ಪದ ಕೇವಲ ಶಬ್ದಕೋಶಕ್ಕಷ್ಟೆ ಸೀಮಿತ ಎಂದು ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಲೋಪ, ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರ ಅಶಿಕ್ಷಿತ ವರ್ತನೆ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿ ತಾಣದ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮಸಿ ಬಳಿದಿರುವುದಂತೂ ಸತ್ಯ.
