Though the perception of bold actress depends on individual interpretation as to giving bold scenes or picking up different types of roles, Mandakini did break the traditional Bollywood heroine image in her debut film Ram Teri Ganga Maili.
She got popular mainly for two scenes in the film.
The one in which she is bathing under the waterfall in a sheer white saree and the other where she is breastfeeding an infant.
Though she has some scenes and songs in the Jeetendra starrer Singhasan she didn't achieve the same level of fame. Basically, she ended up as a normal actress later.
Previously, Zeenat Aman had consistently challenged conventions in the 70s and 80s decade with her Westernized style and confident persona.
Similarly, Dimple Kapadia challenged the conventional image of the Bollywood heroine in Bobby and particularly in Saagar which included a swimsuit scene which was considered bold for an actress having two children at that time.
Both the above mentioned actresses showcased different aspects of femininity on screen with roles that showcased their versatility and willingness to experiment. It can be said that Mandakini failed on this aspect.
In short, Mandakini's boldness was more about her onscreen sensuality with willingness to play different roles but it never worked out as in Ram Teri Ganga Maili.
