ABOUT CANTONMENT RAILWAY STATION
- Cantonment railway station are those railway stations which was established near a military station (Cantonment).
- The term ‘Cantonment’ stands for a large army establishment.
- During the British Raj, there were many areas within a city which had military establishments, Regimental Centres etc.
- Many Cantonment stations in India are small stations with limited stoppages of trains like Delhi Cantt, Meerut Cantt but there are some cities which have Cantonment stations serving as the main station for the city like Agra Cantt, Ambala Cantt etc.
- There are some railway station in India which are classified as Junction railway station because of more connectivity of railway lines from different parts of India but in actual, they are called Cantonment railway station in the city because those station lies in the Cantonment region of the city. The name of stations are Varanasi Junction and Allahabad Junction.
How is Cantonment railway stations different from other railway stations?
- The main difference between Cantonment railway stations and other railway stations is there is presence of Movement Control Office (MCO) at Cantonment railway stations.
- MCO (Movement Control Office) is a place where Indian Army Personnel going for the duty or coming for the duty by train reports here.
