What is a cantonment railway station? How is it different from other railway stations?

  • The term ‘Cantonment’ stands for a large army establishment.
  • During the British Raj, there were many areas within a city which had military establishments, Regimental Centres etc.
  • Many Cantonment stations in India are small stations with limited stoppages of trains like Delhi Cantt, Meerut Cantt but there are some cities which have Cantonment stations serving as the main station for the city like Agra Cantt, Ambala Cantt etc.
  • There are some railway station in India which are classified as Junction railway station because of more connectivity of railway lines from different parts of India but in actual, they are called Cantonment railway station in the city because those station lies in the Cantonment region of the city. The name of stations are Varanasi Junction and Allahabad Junction.

Is it possible to create artificial gravity on a space station?

Yes it is but it must be designed for it. The key of course is spinning to create artificial gravity. This was shown in 2001 a Space Odyssey. If you have the need for a large space station to house a lot of people it could be something like this.

There is little or no gravity in the center hub and ships can dock there if they match the spin. The outer portion has gravity due to the spin (centripetal force). This of course would require a lot of launches and a long time to build. They don’t say what the diameter is but it would have to be at least a couple of hundred meters to not have vertigo due to gravity differences at your head and feet I am told.

A simpler possibility for say 2 Starships going to Mars is a simple tether connecting the noses of the ships. It might look about like this.

With a 300 meter cable and a slow spin of 1.5 RPM you get Mars normal gravity. The issues with this is no other craft can dock most likely. However, the two ships could spin themselves up slowly with attitude thrusters. They just have to de-spin to do anything meaningful like a course correction or preparing to enter the atmosphere. You might be able to save mass with a 200 meter cable and a slightly faster spin.

Why are railway station names written on the yellow board?

The railway station names are written on the yellow board due to below mentioned points.

  • The yellow colour has highly visibility from far away distance to loco pilots to spot the railway station easily. The station names are clearly visible in both day and night and even in foggy weather situation during the winter season.
  • The yellow colour better contrast with the black colour. The black letters written on the yellow board is easy to read from far away distance.

Moreover, the colour yellow is placed at third position among the seven primary colours, in terms of wavelength in the visibility spectrum. The more the wavelength of colour, the farthest it can be seen.

In terms of wavelength, the colour red tops the list but it is used to stop trains at signals. The red colour is not used on the station board because the lateral peripheral vision of yellow colour is 1.24 times higher than that of red colour.

Hence, due to above mentioned points and explanations, the railway station names are written on the yellow board in Indian Railways.
