Not just Netflix there have been multiple films which have found its audience on OTT platforms like Amazon Prime, Sony Liv, Jio Hotstar after failing at the box office.
Laapata Ladies (2024)
One of the most celebrated Hindi films of 2024, Laapata Ladies was released in theatres on March 2024 and received lukewarm response. The film collected around 20 crores nett which barely covered the budget of the film. However the film received high critical acclaim and so when the people released on Netflix people discovered the film and it became one of the most successful film on Netflix India that year and was considered hugely successful even though it was not really successful in theatres. It eventually ended up earning 13 Filmfares the most for a film till now which was not a theatrical success.
Haq (2025)
Even though the film doesn't do justice to the Shah Bano case factually with many cinematic liberties, the film was a compelling peice of cinema particularly due to a brilliant performance by Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi. The film was released without much promotions and couldn't recover its 30 crores budget and ended up earning close to 25 crores becoming a theatrical flop. But on OTT the film got a lot of appreciation and it was one of the most watched films of the year gaining high acclaim and audience acceptance.
Bas Ek Banda Kaafi Hai (2023)
Generally films release in theatre first and then go to OTT but Banda Kafi hai was released on OTT first where it received huge acclaim and success and became the highest viewed film on Zee 5. After that the makers decided to release the film in the theatres to cash on its popularity. Unfortunately the film was barely noticed in the theatres and couldn't even collect 1 crores theatrically. The film was eventually treated as an OTT release and won 5 Filmfare OTT awards alongside one National award.
