What are some interesting facts about the geography of the United States?

Here are some interesting facts about the geography and organization of the United States that you probably don't know.

  • New York City buildings have their own zip codes. Manhattan is so large that it has 200 zip codes, and more than 40 buildings have one.
  • You can walk from Alaska to Russia. In winter, the Bering Strait connecting Alaska and Russia freezes over, making it possible to cross on foot.
  • California is more populous than Canada. Not by a hair: Canada has 36.7 million people, while California alone has 39.5 million.
  • The gigantic Mississippi River. At 3,779 km long, it is the longest river in America and the fourth longest in the world. On average, a drop of water takes about 90 days to cross its entire length.
  • The tiny Roe River. In the United States, it is the second shortest river in the world, at 61 meters. It is beaten only by the Reprua River in Georgia.
  • The tallest mountain in the world. Mount Everest is the tallest mountain measured above sea level. If we include its submerged elevation, the tallest in the world is located in Hawaii and is called Mauna Kea, at 10,211 meters.
  • The United States has a quadruple border. At a point called the Four Corners , four different states meet: Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.
  • Texas is huge. If the entire world's population lived at the same density as New York City, it would fit almost exactly into the state of Texas alone.
