What is the most ingenious and brutal act ever committed in the business world?

Emaar Properties, the owner of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, has an incredibly clever way of dealing with tenants who don't pay their monthly bills.

Most landlords will use a lawyer to evict these tenants. The problem is, this method is time-consuming. Furthermore, if the tenant doesn't have the money, they may not even get their money back, even if they win in court.

When Emaar Properties encountered a case where a tenant was in arrears with their rent, they came up with a smarter solution.

They “only” blocked the elevator and AC access of those units.

Of course, no one would want to go home to the 163rd floor (+- 844m) using the stairs, and then be trapped in a hot and stuffy room (because the windows cannot be opened).

I wonder if there are still people who want to be in arrears or not?

What once famous companies/business no longer exist?

There was one business that happened between USA and India went extinct around 150 years ago.

Actually, when I first heard about that business, I thought it was impossible for such a business to have existed in the first place.

Any guess what the business was about?

It was the export of ice blocks from USA to India.

A guy called Frederick Tudor came up with the ingenious idea of harvesting ice from the lakes of boston and export it to tropical or equatorial countries.

India was a big importer of Tudor’s ice cubes. Tudor's Ships offloaded cubes of ices in the Madras and Calcutta ports.

Interestingly, most of the ice cubes reached the destinations without any significant melting thanks to the low temperatures of ocean water and insulation with sawdust.

Donny Trump was complaining a few months ago about how little business India did with US compared to what they do with us, but in nineteenth century India was importing tonnes of ice cubes from the USA.

The business flourished until the technology brought the ability to make ices anywhere in the world. The business finally ended around 1884 when Madras imported the last shipment of ice.

Vivekanandar Illam where the ice blocks were stored 150 years ago in Chennai/Madras.

Vivekanandar Illam (Vivekananda house) is a popular landmark in Chennai today. But around 150 years ago, the building was used for storing the ice that was imported and was then called ‘Ice House’. The building still exists today as the only witness to the business that once existed and thrived.

What was the greatest business deal of all time?

In 1980, IBM was the giant. No one came close. They approached a small company- Microsoft when they required an operating system in their new PC. Big mistake.

Bill Gates spotted the opportunity and did not procrastinate. He made one major point during the deal and that is, Microsoft would retain the ownership of the software. IBM didn’t care. They were specialized in hardware money. That decision it made was everything.

This is the twist about it, Microsoft did not even have an OS.

So Gates was quick. He purchased a crude and incomplete system named QDOS at only $75,000. No drama, no delay. After that, he cleaned it, changed its name to MS-DOS, and prepared it.

And the very thrust: the business was not exclusive. Microsoft had the ability to sell the same software to anybody. And they did.

IBM believed that they were in the lead. As a matter of fact, they gave the reign to another person.

Imitation of IBM PCs became rampant. Each of them required an OS. Microsoft was ready. They did not sell machines, they sold the key to machines.

Hardware at IBM was replaceable. The software of Microsoft was inevitable.

This wasn’t luck. It was promptitude, rapidity, and keenness.

A purchase costing $75,000 became worldwide domination.

Not a partnership. A slow motion takeover.

What are the business ventures of Sachin Tendulkar?

Sachin Tendulkar played his first innings beautifully, we can explain his first innings in just a quote of Tony Grieg - ”well this little man is the nearest thing to bradman there's ever been, what a wonderful player! ” (if you are 90’s kid you surely must have read that in Tony's voice)

Talking about his second innings, it is nothing less flamboyant than his first one, he is up there in the charts for the preferences for endorsement till now, although it has been more than 6 years of him retiring.

His ventures are in themselves a great life lesson, some are great investments which were very successful, but as we all do, there were some of his investments that weren't that imminent.

Let us have a look at them,

RESTAURANT BUSINESS (Tendulkar's & Sachin's)

Sachin Tendulkar began his journey as an entrepreneur by opening a restaurant in Mumbai in 2002. He partnered with celebrity hotelier Sanjay Narang, and his first eatery was named 'Tendulkar's'. Soon after, he opened another one, 'Sachin's', in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Although, he took keen interest in setting up the ventures, he did not taste success and had to eventually shut down both by 2007. However, never one to give up, Tendulkar followed through with other business ventures.

SACH' - ‘The personal care brand'

In 2011, The Future Group's Big Bazaar launched a range of personal care products named 'Sach', inspired by Sachin Tendulkar. The cricketer is also a stakeholder in the joint venture between Future Group and the Manipal Group, which has under its aegis a variety of products in the health supplement, sports goods, fitness equipment and lifestyle accessories categories.

MUSAFIR - THE TRAVEL BRAND

IN 2013, The cricketer had 7.5 per cent stake in this UAE-based travel portal, apart from also being its brand ambassador. Despite being associated with such a big brand, the portal failed to deliver and eventually Tendulkar decided to exit from the partnership. After 5 years of being associated with the brand, he retired with Rs 25 crore, one crore for being the brand ambassador for each year and Rs 20 crore at the time of exit.

SPORTS FRANCHISEES

You can't take sports away from the God of cricket. Tendulkar may have stopped playing, but he is now the co-owner of the Indian Super League (ISL) franchise Kerala Blasters FCBadminton Premier League team Bengaluru Blasters, and Master Blaster's magic in Kabaddi. As a co-owner of ISL, the former Indian cricket team captain had been associated with the club since its inception in 2014. However, in September 2018, Tendulkar sold off his stake in ISL after an association of 4 years.

SMAAASH SPORTS

Getting into the business of sports stimulation was a natural choice for the master blaster. Smaaash Entertainment, founded in 2009, provides sports simulation tech based on cricket, football, racing, and leisure activities, like that of a lounge, spa, arcade gaming. Tendulkar is one of the biggest shareholders of the company which was founded by Shripal Morakhia, the man behind Sharekhan. Last year, the company managed to raise Rs 25 crore from US investments.

TRUE BLUE - THE APPAREL BRAND.

This apparel brand for men is a joint venture between Tendulkar and Arvind Fashion Brands Limited and was launched in May, 2016. The legend who admits to take fashion tips from his son Arjun, who is a budding cricketer, wanted to bring something for his fans which was stylish. Last year he expanded his brand's presence globally, by foraying into the US and UK markets. He plans to make headway into women's wear as well, however he hasn't set a timeline for it yet.

SPORTS MANAGEMENT COMPANY

SRT Sports Management Pvt. Ltd, a sports management company is managed by the cricketer and his wife, Dr. Anjali Tendulkar. The cricketer himself manages all commercial engagements and social initiatives. The company was launched in 2016.

SRT PHONE

Tendulkar and Smartron joined hands to bring together the srt.phone. The phone represents Tendulkar's dependability and is exclusively available on Flipkart. Available in two storage variants, the Smartron Sachin Tendulkar phone comes in Titanium Grey colour. The 32GB variant priced at Rs. 12,999, and the 64GB variant priced at Rs. 13,999.

Who is the most remarkable business man?

Sri. Cherukuri Ramoji Rao , who was born in 1936 is in my view a most remarkable business man Diversity is his method of success.

His first business was Margadarshi Chit funds. After it has reached its peak, he started Priya foods industry. He made no. of pickles for house hold people. After success of that he entered journalism and started Eenadu Paper. He created new trends in news paper by introducing district editions, of which every news papers are following now a days.

He used unique method to popularize Eenadu News paper. in 1974 he started the paper in visakhapatnam in a small shed.Even before publication of the paper he recruited about 50 boys whose job is to come to his office at early time of 5 A.M. and sit there. This is to cultivate a habit if early rising. Afterwards he identified the the houses of paper reading public. At that moment Andhra Prabha used to be leading Newspaper in Andhra Pradesh. He asked the boys to follow the news paper boys and identify the houses where the paper is distributed.

Then he started the news paper publication hiring top journalists and also with a new concept of district edition added to the main edition. At that time all the boys he recruited developed the habit of rising at 4 A.M. He asked them to distribute the papers to the houses of paper reading public identified earlier before other news papers are distributed free of cost.

Thus every news paper reader in Visakhapatnam developed the habit of reading Eenadu paper first thing in the morning. Also they are happy about their local news published in district edition. After fifteen days of free distribution he sent promoters to every news reading persons house and promoted his paper by asking their suggestions and requesting them to subscribe to his paper. Thus the eenadu paper grew stature and started expanding to one by one districts, and by 1980 it made its entry to whole of Andhra pradesh. Sudha Chandran herself portrayed her role in the move, which is named Mayuri. and another bio pic of Ashwani Nachappa, athlete, again Ashwani performing her own biopic role. Also he produced many comedies.

Then while producing the movies he got the idea to construct a film city so that any producer comes with only money and take out his movie print while going. Complete establishment.

He started a Telugu T.V.channel called E.TV. in august 1995 and added ETV 2 as news channel subsequently. He further added ETV in other languages of India.

Thus he constructed Ramoji Film city in 2000 acres with the sets of railway station, post office, street roads of a village and town, beautiful scenes, lakes, ponds and what not everything we see in movies. It is the biggest of that kind in Asia.

He always made good rapport with the ruling Government.

His rise and his business tactics are worth a lesson in text books of Business school .
