What are some funny facts about Saudi Arabia, its people and culture?

 Riyadh’s camel market is one of the largest in the world and sells about 100 camels per day.

  • Motorists in Saudi Arabia have invented a perilous but exciting new driving sport called Sidewalk Skiing, which involves balancing a car on its side while the car is in motion.
  • In Saudi Arabia, everything closes except for Hospitals during salat (prayer time). Strictly enforced, salat can last up to 30 minutes.
  • Saudi Arabian men typically dress in thobes, a lightweight garment which is almost always white; a garment equal to an academic graduation gown; and Shimaq (gutras) or the traditional head scarf. Women are always found with abayas on. You will literally find every occassion same style of dressing.
  • Petrol Prices for every liter were 45 Halalas (SAR 3.75=$1 and SAR 1=100Halalas) way cheaper than water until the kingdom decided to withdraw subsidies since 2016 and then last year which increased by 80% (in 2017). Still, the price for 1 liter of petrol is 1.37 SAR as against 1 liter of drinking water is 1 SAR.
  • In Ramadan which is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is one of the most important months for Muslims the market doesn’t open until 12 pm and restaurants until 3 pm or salat Al-Asr (prayer time for Muslims).
  • You could note that the Parking during Taraweeh prayer after the last prayer of night know as Salat Al Esha it’s hard to find a parking space at any of the Jamia Masjids(Big Mosques used for Sermons).   • Serving Iftar (Breaking of Fast during Ramadan at sunset) for visitors to the Prophet's Mosque is a cherished tradition for the people of Madinah, it’s a practice which dates back 1,400 years since the Prophet first built the mosque. They serve an average of 300,000 meals a day. But, this has been taken over by the Kingdom’s government to organise the same since few years. It’s amazing to note that in just a span of 15 mins the place will be clean and every person lines up for Salat Al Maghrib (Prayer after Sunset)
  • Saudi Arabia took witchcraft so seriously that the country had banned the Harry Potter books until 2012 by Anti-Witchcraft Action Unit, which is under the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPV). The unit is charged with apprehending sorcerers and reversing the harmful effects of their spells.

The number of students in the university total to around a staggering 52,000 and metro trains in the university that run throughout the campus with a total track length of 11.5 kilometers! These are driverless trains that use a similar technology to that of the Copenhagen Metro to operate.

  • The third largest producer of dates is Saudi Arabia. This country has the perfect conditions for date growth and cultivation, producing 836,983 metric tons per year. Nearly 388,000 acres across the country are dedicated to date palms and its fruit production. This country exports approximately 8.8% of the world’s dates which totals around $94.3 million. The primary importers of these exports are Jordan (19%), Yemen (17%), and Kuwait (15%).

The Buraydah/Buraidah date market, the largest in the world, operates around the clock, receiving clients from different parts of the kingdom.

  • As of 2012, livestock population amounted to 11 million sheep, 3.4 million goats, half a million cattles and a quarter of a million camels.
