What experiences did Meenakshi Seshadri face in Bollywood that led her to stop signing new films and eventually move to the USA?

She was 20 when she first appeared in Hero (1983) and she was 33 when she last appeared in Ghatak (1996)

She had a long long career mainly in Bollywood with films opposite major stars from Jackie Shroff, Rishi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol, Vinod Khanna and even the Superstar Amitabh Bachchan

In 1991, Rajkumar Santoshi was very eager to marry her and made a proposal to her family

They said No saying they would never want a filmi groom and Santoshi was very humiliated so he refused to work with her in Damini

Many supported him because they felt to insult a filmy groom when she earned so much from the industry was an insult (in those days you just couldn't say “Hes not my type”)

Yash Chopra who worked with Seshadri in Vijay (1988) was approached and he calmed down Santoshi while Amjad Khan calmed down the producer and the news media outlet LEHREN and FILMFARE PAGE 3 reported Nita Dharia (Best friend of Tina Munim who became Tina Ambani)

Meenakshi gave an interview clarifying that career came first and Rajkumar Ji was her inspiration (something like that) and production went back to schedule

She had a good career and she retired peacefully to US in 1996 as a senior actress

In that era , 33 was regarded to be on the higher side for retirement

Her fellow actresses of that Era followed the same trend

  • Sridevi (Retired 1997, Age 33)
  • Madhavi (Retired 1990, Age 28)
  • Amrita Singh (Retired from mainstream heroine roles 1991, Aged 33)
  • Jaya Prada (Retired 1993, Aged 31)
  • Farah Naaz (Retired 1993, Aged 29)
