Skanda Purana is also called as Kartika Purana , related to Lord Kartekaya, the Son of Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.
It is the largest among the Eighteen Maha Puranas, and it contains Eighty eight thousand and one Shlokas.
The Purana mainly comprises the Birth of Skand ( Kartekaya ), reason for his birth and after effects. Kartekaya was the commander of the God's army and was born to kill the Tarakasur and save the world from his atrocities. Thus Kartekaya is referred as Mahasena.
Kartekaya is six faced, the five faces represent Shiva as the Bhootanaadha ( 5 elements of the nature ) and the sixth face represent that of Goddess Parvathi.
