Karthi's USP in my opinion is to act in movies which have the perfect balance between commercial entertainment and good storytelling which is fresh and innovative.
Most of Karthi's successful movies such as Naan Mahaan Alla , Siruthai , Madras , Theeran , Thozha and Kaithi follow this template. His movies have had the best balanced mixture of good storytelling and good entertainment and that is why it is appreciated by Critics and Audiences alike.
Now Post Ponniyin Selvan Karthi acted in 4 Movies namely :
- Japan
- Meiyazhagan
- Vaa Vathiyar
- Sardar 2
A pattern which I have seen in all these movies is that they are either too mass masala or they are too artistic and that goes totally against the USP of other Karthi movies which have a balance of entertainment and storytelling.
Now in the case of Meiyazhagan the movie got good reviews from both audiences and critics alike and it became a above average grosser in the box office If I am not wrong. Hence though it didnt become a monstrous hit , it did get widespread acclaim and became a decent venture.
If you take movies such as Japan , Vaa Vathiyar and Sardar 2 they are too commerical and have too many Mass Masala elements which is very unnecessary.
These three movies have really good stories and concepts but Instead of focusing on the main story these movies focus on giving more entertainment and hence the movies look convoluted and feel almost incomplete.
If you ask me Karthi is in the same position where Surya was some years ago where he either tried too many experimental films such as 24 or tried too many entertainment films like Anjaan without realising that Audiences want a balance of both from him.
Hence, Karthi should rediscover his roots and make films which are both Commercially entertaining and Have good storytelling because thats what audiences also expect from him. If he strikes this balance correctly he will continue to give more successes like he always does.
