Putlibai (1929–58) was the first female dacoit of India.
Dancing girl : She was born Gauhar Bano in Central Provinces (Madhya Pradesh.)
Poverty and family tradition turned her into Putlibai, a dancing girl.
Well, she soon became famous. among brats and bandits.
Bandit : Nevertheless, she was kidnapped by Sultan Gujjar, a notorious bandit.
He forcibly kept her as his mistress.
In 1955, cops killed Sultana Daku as he was known in an encounter.
In order to survive in the harsh ravines of Chambal ; Putlibai became a bandit.
Notorious : She soon became leader of armed gang.
Her large gang and ruthless methods turned her into a legend.
Ironically, villagers of Chambal valley treated like a savior.
End : In one of the police encounters ; she lost her left hand.
But, she still led her gang with iron hand policy.
Finally, in 1958, cops killed her in an encounter, while she was trying to cross a river.
She was barely 31 years old.
Movies : Many hindi movies like Putli Bai, Mujhey Jeene Do, Sherni were inspired by her life.
Books : Many known books have been written about her.
